Hi All, I have a FL Octavia Scout and the original tyres are about 3/4 down with about 20k on the clock, trouble is I will have to buy 4 tyres at once (ouch), what do taxis use for getting the maximum life from the tyres ? otherwise with the mileage they do in a year it would cost a fortune in replacements, are tyre compounds softer nowadays as tyres used to last 40-50k on some of my old cars. cheers - Stuart.

Compounds are softer... I think you've done well with 20k..... I'm no taxi driver, but used to do 50k a year as a driving school... I'm a big fan of mid range tyres, perform almost as well as top brands, but at half the cost... I'd never advise cheap ones, absolute nightmare.

I got 22K out of mine. The fronts were at 2mm rears about 2.4mm.

I will probably go mid-range for replacements.

I got 20k out of my fronts,i could of got another 1k but changed them whilst i had the money. I fitted falken 452's to mine.

21,500 miles when I changed my fronts at around 3mm. Rears are still the original Michelin Pilot Primacy at 36,000 miles or so and have 4mm left.

But the replacement fronts ,Primacy HP, are now at about 3mm. Not impressed by that wear rate.

Thinking of Barum next time.

I kept changing my original tyres back to front and 2 were changed at 19000 miles and the other 2 at 22000 miles.

These were OEM Dunlop Sport Maxx GT. These were terrible for wear, noise and sawtoothing. DO NOT BUY THEM

Now all replaced with Falken FK452's

I got 24,000 miles out of my factory fit Dunlop Sport SP's on the Scout. I did take them right down to the wear bars though.

Mine also wore evenly on each corner so needed four at once

Was please with the Dunlops in the winter and summer months so got four more for just over £500 fitted.

My fronts were changed at 35K.I,m still on the original tyres on rear and now at 46K.They were all Michelin Pilots from when i had the car from new.Think the rears are bordering on the limit now though.Will find out in November when MOT is due.

Car is 2006 1.9TDi.

Averaging 29k on the fronts 58 to 60 on the rears vredestein all seasons

Got 18k out my first set of fronts.

Rears still on from factory (probably got a good 5mm left as well).

Just about to pass 21k miles from new.

Running Kumho's on the front now - only £78 a tyre.

Fabia VRS MK1

Every 15,000 miles on front, regardless of brand.

Rear 40,000 miles with original Continental Contact sport2, when first changed.

Car total mileage now around 55,000 miles.

Thanks for the replys lads, my lads got a Fabia VRS - 15k - thats a new set every 2 years (ouch), I was pleased with the grip last year in the snow but they are just wearing a bit quick for me (being tight!), silver where did you get your tyres from ?, driving wise its mainly to/from work M-F with the weekend towing the caravan on poss wet grass, considering the Scout is supposedly 85% front wheel drive they are wearing evenly all round and its not as though I can use the spare as its a smaller size. :S cheers - Stuart

Where did you get that price from?

LAst car was Octavia 1.9TDI with 16" Vega rims

Front - oem Dunlops 14k; Hankook 24k

Rear - oem Dunlops 38k (replaced with life left but they were getting noisy!)

Replaced all 4 with Hankooks at 38k - still plenty of life left when I swapped at 50k

Current Octavia 1.8TSI with 17" Pallas rims

oem Bridgestones swapped front to rear same side at 10k, now done 12k

what were the fronts are 3-4mm, what were the rears are 5-6mm

They are as noisy as hell and I wish I could afford to change them for Hankooks!!

Circa 20K on the Scout is about what we got so sounds about right

I agree with the comments on the Dunlop's - they were terrible. I now have Falken 452's on the back and they are so much better. I also got a full set of Falken 452's for my Astravan and they have been really good - quiet, good ride confort, good in the dry and good in the wet. Will be getting another 2 for the front of the VRS when the time comes (dealer fitted Avon's when we got the 6 month old car).

Just for info, I had a couple of Renault Trafic vans and they had Continental Vanco tyres fitted - got around 40k on the fronts and when I sold one of the vans with 76k on it, I recon the rears would have done 100k no problem. It was just crusing up and down the M74 and M6 most of the time though.

One thing you need to remember is that if the tyres last for many thousands of miles, it means that they are being used with low tread depth for longer.

I prefer to get mid range tyres that get replaced more often so that they have deeper tread over more of the miles travelled (we get a lot of rain in Scotland).

That doesnt sound right - get a full geometry check done by a specialist.

Specialist has looked at geometry twice. First adjust found all wheels to be out, especially at the back. Seemed to drive better afterwards but still, the insides at the back wear hideously. Went back again and they said it was spot on when they tested it again. Now gained a document from Skoda HQ saying its a known problem and what to adjust the geometry to and what tyre brands not to use. Tryes need changing very very soon so will get new ones and ask them to apply the new settings. I carry nothing in the boot apart from a tow bar. Maybe my towing of a caravan makes the problem worse. Who knows!

37,500 miles on the front! Continental EcoConti3's. Rears still going strong! I'll have to admit I wore them well into the wear mark zone - and beyond! Replaced with the same tyres.

Sorry, only just seen this.

I get my tyres from my local tyre supplier in Longbridge, Birmingham.

They are an excellent supplier and always let me know the deals they can do on specific brands when I go in - last time it was Vrede Sessantas (on my BMW before I traded), this time it was Kumho's.

Seem to be a great tyre too, first time I've had them and they grip well and are wearing well too.
