Moon alloys + winters

Featured Replies

Thinking I might splash out and having seen TP`s photos think they look good.Yorkie is after all my retirement present!

Just wondered how much they would be if I can get them and what anybody thinks?

Must admit Johann`s comment makes a lot of sense as both sets will last twice as long just can`t think about getting Yorkie and within a month putting black steel wheels on! Really the only extra cost is the wheels and I have managed to find a suitable spot in the garage to store them.

Many winter trips to Germany on my all seasons seeing very smart Mercs and Beemers spending 4/5 months on winters with black steel wheels which does take someting away from the smartness!Mind you there must also be a lot with two sets of alloys

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter,

glad to hear you like our Monster on her Moon alloys  very pleased with them myself, personally prefer the look of the Yeti on the 16" setup and even more so on these alloys. The 17" arrangement reminds me of those 'boy racer' Corsa's on there over sized wheels and drainpipe exhausts  However I will be switching to steels come November with 'Rif' wheel trims. The roads round here resemble a battle field every winter in terms of pot holes etc. be very easy to wipe out an alloy :S

There are others though that as you suggest do run alloys in Winter, Agerbundsen for one uses Moons in the winter and Spectrum's in the Summer. So if alloys are your preference then why not go for it

As a side note all our cars will be switching to a more winter arrangement, with the wife's Fabia II going back onto steels with Bridgestone winters we purchased last year and I've just ordered a full set of Goodyear Vector 4Seasons for my lads gracefully aging Fabia I HTP :)

Regards,

TP

If I was going for dedicated winter tyres I'd go for Moon alloys too.

Personally I think they look much better than putting steel rims on, even though that's a practical option.

No worries here about needing to protect alloys in winter as most people leave the same ones on all year round anyway.

Oh as a side note;

camskill are offering both Dunlop and Goodyear 215/60 R16 winters at very reasonable prices.

There should be no doubt as to which camp I am in :smirk:

The purpose of alloys is not as much looks as it is that they are perfectly round and give a better ride - performance and comfort - than stamped steel wheels.

PS.: Insist on balancing to less than 5 grams.

But how much do 4 Moon Alloys cost?

I went for Moon Alloys with dubbed winter tyres. I paid 1300 €. Rather expensive, but I don't want steel rims 6 month a year B)

I have also purchased a set of moon alloys for winter as I consider apearance important. They are expensive like most nice things.

At a guess somewhere around £160 each x 4

I'll get Spectrum alloys with ContiVikingContact 5's and pay about 1400 € (£ 1210).

Winter tyres in use from October to April. Waiting for snow in couple of weeks, usually before November.

I am going to ask my dealer the cost of one 16" Moon alloy and tyre to use as a spare, has my Greenline as no spare and I like to swop the wheels around once a year and clean the inside of the alloy wheels

It's not important in my opinion because they are not expensive. Maybe £150 to £160 each.

I'd rather buy alloys than have the car on steels even if it cost £300 more for the rims.

Personally I've never understood people buying a 20k car and then penny pinching a few hundred pounds so it looks odd.

Bossfox, reason I ordered steel wheels is cos of the crud on the road during winter, plus the fact if I hit anything the steel one generally is not written off. Even if they were the same price, Id be tempted to stay on steel!

Likewise, would be happy to have another set of Moons but the roads become a total mess during the winter round here; steels will except much more punishment.

Also I don't think the Rif covers look all that bad on the Yeti, mind at over half the cost of a steel wheel they should do :wonder: :D

I understand that. We used the same argument to put steel rims on the Landrover as we were worried about damaging them offroading. If you are in really bad conditions it does make sense.

But where I live I've never damaged an alloy wheel in my whole life driving on the road, wether changing to winter tyres on just staying on summers. And after winter the alloys have always cleaned up fine. For me it would be a "what if" argument that never seems to happen.

And I have a spare.

My mum has a Greenline Yeti arriving in the next couple of weeks. I'm going to have a look at that "in the metal" and see what I think. Then I'll probably pick up a set of those rims for winter tyres next year, as my Yeti doesn't arrive until March.

In the meantime my wifes Yeti does 4000 miles a year so is fine on the standard alloys and goodyear all seasons.

+1

Could not agree more.

Maybe I'm weird but I really like the look of silver steel wheels. Black steel wheels look awful beyond belief hence me now going to paint mine silver. And the end result will look like the pics below. Nothing wrong with that in my book. Plain and simple and it will suit the Yeti perfectly.

I've been thinking of spraying mine also, body colour, Pacific Blue in my case, might look good also. But I suppose silver would draw less attention, which could be a benefit these days.

Sorry Jeep, but like white socks should never be worn with sandals body colour wheels are a huge no-no in car styling. Unless you drive a white Saxo/Nova with matching 22" white wheels. Normally it is also only the young MaxPower magazine brigade that do this as a cheap way to "style" their cars...

or a Fabia vRS?

Sorry Johann those VW grey steelies just look very iron curtain and make you think somebodies nicked their wheel covers! :D

or a Fabia vRS?

Oi!!! :giggle:

Almost got steels but put my winters on the OEM alloys and went bigger for the "summers". Defo think that black steels look bad....as if the hub caps have fallen off, or it's a cheap rental car :giggle: !!! Much better to paint it silver or "rally white"...as they then look "finished"! B)

sorry but I was just trying to point out to Johann that he might have just offended vRS owners :smirk:

I've always just used black steelies with my winters but now you've all got me wondering whether I should paint them.

or a Fabia vRS?

No need to get personal. :giggle:

 Nope I was not on about white wheels, I was on about wheels coloured coded to a car! White Fabia vRS wheels look fine.

But yes even with the centre caps on black wheels on any colour Yeti bar perhaps a white one looks as if you either have four spares on or have lost your hubcaps!
