Moon alloys + winters

Featured Replies

 Nope I was not on about white wheels, I was on about wheels coloured coded to a car! White Fabia vRS wheels look fine.

But yes even with the centre caps on black wheels on any colour Yeti bar perhaps a white one looks as if you either have four spares on or have lost your hubcaps!

Here is a white one without tab caps: (Elsie the Helipad when she was 6 miles old....)

Nice car, but those pictures don't change my mind.

I'd still only go for steels if doing proper off roading where alloy damage was a potential issue, not a one in a million off chance... which I'd have a spare for.

hmm are those the hubcaps Johann has posted about?

Actually finding some Moons to buy could be a problem. Contacted 3 dealers and nobody`s come back to me! :(

Actually finding some Moons to buy could be a problem. Contacted 3 dealers and nobody`s come back to me! :(

I contacted 4 dealers and all said they could obtain them within 3 days. Best I could do on price though was list less 10% and sure enough they were available within the 3 days quoted. List price £187.40 each

All dealers in the South West area.

Have a look on ebay and find some VAG alloys that you like there. Lots to choose from and they are often cheaper than going for a set of steels. Just make sure you check the PCD and offset before you bid. I got a nice set of 16s last year from a Seat Altea for my Yeti. Car sold now :( , but I just got a nice set of Audi alloys for my Roomster that I now have. So a little bit of effort can save a bundle. Happy hunting!

I tried that and the amount of variables were just too daunting... And people on eBay just have no clue how to advertise the PCD and offset information. They might be cheap yes but come to insurance how do you explain the Audi wheels on your Skoda? So end of day I stuck to Skoda wheels on a Skoda.

Yes, there are a lot of variables, but a bit of research and avoidance of ads with insufficient information and there are good buys to be had. I did see a lot of the clueless ads in my search Johann, you're right , many folks either don't have a clue or want to be helpful.

Audi wheels on a Skoda no problem, at least in my case, the main thing that helps is that they are VAG products, so made to the same standards. If the offset and PCD is fine, then the rest is just a badge. One of the kind chaps over on the Roomster section had done a list of appropriate fitment wheels.

Obviously the yeti has different fitment requirements, but with all the knowledge floating around on here, somebody could do a similar list.

At the end of the day, its nice to have choices.

Actually one of the kind chaps here already did it :smirk:

The Plumber's post

I had an idea there was info around, now its just a matter of using the appropriate PCD and offset and you can work out a list of compatible donor cars to search from.

Okay, it won't suit everybody to do this kind of thing, but for some it works.

I even have this useful link from skoda.de that lists approved wheel sizes for all Skoda models. Yeti included.

So basically you can use any tyre/rim combination as long as it is listed there. Options are not at all limited to VAG only.

Boy, we detoured a bit original topic ...

Edit: it turns out that The Plumber's post already included the link above

Thanks for all your thoughts on this subject.

I have now got the Moons and having ummed and arrred about tyres I missed the offer on the Hankooks and went to my local tyre man (support your local gunfighter)who has got me some Goodyear Eagle Ultra GW3`s which seem pretty well rated if not the sooper dooper Goodyears.

I will be taking the wheels down to him next week when we get back from Wales but just wondered should there be separate Skoda hub middles for these or will they just take off the Annapurnas and the middle will be common? There are just wheels in the boxes.

Sorry for being a bit thick but I have had company cars for the last 36 years!

Cheers

Peter.

Hi Peter,

yes the centre cap will just push out and transfer to the new wheels; your tyre fitter should be able to do that for you.

Oh don't forget the photo after the swap and enjoy Wales, always enjoy my visits there

Moons are fitted to Yorkie with Goodyear Eagle Ultragrip GW3`s 215/60/16 as worn by the Great Dane.

Annapurnas and Pirellis only done 600 miles into loft.

Might post a photo as think they look good TP

16" Moons cost £180 each, that is £748 per set!! My local tyre dealer quoted me £10 per wheel to change tyres including balancing. So at £40 per change Spring & Summer that is £80 per year, it will therefore take you over 10 years to recoup the cost of the Moons ( first change is included in price of tyres)! That cannot possibly be cost effective in normal use. The only possible cost justification would be if you drove over such appalling road surfaces in the winter that you were certain to destroy Alloys - but why would you drive differently in the winter than the summer? It is also relevant that we rarely get very bad winters - like 2010-2011 - in the UK, mostly we get cold and wet with occasional snow days. Winter tyres are justified because of their better grip in all conditions below 7C so buy a set of winter tyres and get your local tyre dealer to swap them on your existing Alloys in Spring and Autumn. Simple and cheap!!

I accept that this calculation is less relevant with steel wheels, but that assumes you are happy with the appearance etc. of steel wheels for half the year and as steel wheels cost approx £40 per wheel it will still take 3-4 years to break even! How long are you planning to keep the Yeti????

Why not get hold of some s/h refurbished VAG group alloys from Ebay with the right specs?

I recently got hold of some nicely refurbed 16" Catalunya ex-Passat B6 (and someother VAG models) from Ebay for £50 each to which I have fitted 215/60 Dunlop Wintersport 4Ds, to replace my 17" standard fitted alloys with Dunlop Sport 01s. Ride is betetr and now looking forward to the wet and the snow. The Skoda supplied alloys are very expensive, particularly for winter tyre use.

surprised you bother in London at all given how much warmer it is down there. I travel to London once a week and never fail to be amazed by the difference in temperature.

I did look on ebay when buying wheeels but in the end of the day the descriptions never really gave me the confidence that I'd be buying wheels that would actually fit. I ended up just buying steelies from mytyres.

I started the exact same way: looking on eBay for something but in the end gave up. It is a total nightmare as hardly anyone properly advertises their wheels. You can be lucky of course but I gave up in the end and added a steel winter set to my car's order. Job done.

When Elsie the Helipad was a week old we took her up to the Glen of the Eagles. Needed winter tyres for that, also for getting through Oxfordshire which was snowbound, but even on the first day I drove her, it was though some small lanes around Biggin Hill that I could not stand upright on emoticon-0140-rofl.gif. I bought wheels from the dealer and tyres from the Tyre place at the end of my road.

fair enough. There is certainly a lot more awareness this year, and much more stock. EVen adverts in our local newspaper, and then you get numpties like we had on the radio the other day saying that winter tyres help a bit but the only real answer is to buy a 4x4. :dull:
