Warning: Fabia Door Leaks

Featured Replies

Did my rear door seals today. Thanks everyone for the info

I used Wickes roof & gutter sealant. It does not cure like silicone, so you do not get a nice smooth finish but it is able to be used in slightly damp conditions.

I replaced the lower door clips with the newer ones which seem to be better sealed than the older type.

One question I have is that one of my doors is now not opening from the inside if you try and use the inside door handle. I was hoping it was just the childlock but it does not seem to be the case. The door still opens from the outside door handle & opens and shuts OK from the central locking. Before I have to take all the trim off again to see what the problem is, I just wondered if anyone has a more simple solution.

Thanks in advance for any replies

  • Got mine fixed...well, I've found the problem. Had a wet floor in front drivers side and after sealing all doors (one of them 2-3 times) I've found the problem.   Here's how: Ripped out in

No, there this no simple solution - you will need the door card off.... sorry. The control cable has hopped off the door opening handle on the inside.

Happened to me but I tested the door handle before clipping the card down luckily. You will need to clip the metal disc on the end of the cable back on the lever then hook the cable tube over holder. It is like a bicycle brake cable.

Thanks a lot for your help

Shame it all went quite well apart from the door opening!

At least it won't be wet and you can pretend the child locks on :)

I put a deposit on a second hand Fabia 1.4 yesterday at the dealer and it's in a good condition but after reading about the leaky doors I popped down to the dealer for a second inspection today. I discovered the dampness of the back carpets on both sides. The vehicle comes with 3 months warranty therefore before I sign the paper work do you think they would fix it? The reason I asked is there was only 1 guy working today and he didn't know about anything so I have to speak the salesmen who sold me the car. Is it a simple fix by the dealer? I need the car asap as my current car road tax runs out at the end of the month.

Thanks

Chun

Is it a simple fix by the dealer?

Yes - assuming they know what they're doing and do it properly. Show them the video?

thx mate, what video are you talking about? By the way the window ain't misting up so does that mean the problem is not that bad?

Try searching for the word "video" in the search box at the top of this page - there may be two versions. Wet carpets are wet carpets - not doing any good...

If the carpet is damp in the back the door carriers are most likely leaking.

This one:

I would get them to do it before you take the car - every dealer knows the issue. It is easy to do yourself but you will need a bag of replacement clips costing 30p each as they always break and sealant plus a gun. I used black gutter sealant put it on thick and spread it out with a old plastic card.

Thx DRJ and DJDAZZY!!!!

I will speak to them tomorrow after work to get them sorted out before I sign the paper work.

Can't wait to get my hand on the fabia and enjoy some happy motoring in the next few days.

Thanks guys.

Sorted it out today

Thanks again

I would make sure they do the job before buying

I have a 2003 Fabia low mileage with the full 1 year Skoda warranty, but this problem is not covered under the terms. They have been OK with the other known faults so far, steering angle sensor and front wishbone bushes.

Spoke to them today, I explained the dampness in the back foot well and he highlighted the reason is due to the car getting the carpet cleaned. They are aware of the problem and they confirmed everything will be fine. I will double check the dampness before I pay for the car. The car comes with 3 months skoda warranty so I will ask them what it includes in that period.

What is the percentage of the fabia with seal problems? 10/10? I may ask them for the service history details as the previous owner had it serviced by them from new.

I think the salesmen don't like me as I'm kind of pestering him with problems as I want the car to be sound before I take it of them. haha

10/10 isn't a percentage :) :) :)

My 2004 had dry carpets - at least to the touch - though it did have misty windows. My 2007 car was/is MUCH worse !!!

hahaha thanks for quoting me on that one, should have pay more attention at school.

When I test drove the car no misty windows so hopefully it was due to the cleaning of the carpets.

Misty windows and excess condensation normally occurs in the winter. It's not really a problem now it's warming up. The best way to check is to run a dry finger along the bottom of the door cards after some rain. If your finger comes back damp/wet then the seal is leaking.

You won't get any obvious signs of leaking at this time of year apart from after heavy rainfall, unless the problem is really bad, in which case the rear footwells will be soaking. Carpets should be dry in a few days (I would guess) if its just been cleaned.

Thx bezzy for your advice. The car will be ready hopefully Friday, I will double check the seal around the doors for sign of damp and I can't wait to own my first skoda as Im always fan of gap cars.

I was suprised when I opend up my car to see that it had been done before, my car must of been owned by someone here before... It looked like some of the sealent had failed so I went over it again big style. I'm sure submarines let in more water now, but How do I get rid of the smell of sealent from my car?

Ive got it in the garage just now with the house de-humidifier running and stuck a few magic tree's in the outlet bit so it pumps out nice smelling air haha.

Will that work? Any other tips?

The smell with pass with time. Maybe windows down if you drive anywhere for the next couple of days. It will stop you from getting high off the smell! Hehe! Give it a day or two and then put a hose pipe over it, to check it has sealed the doors properly. Give it 30 mins or so, and you should see it on the rubber seal, or it should be wet where the door card meets the metal if it's not solved the problem.

It rained pretty hard lastnight and it felt dry, but the cars due a good wash so I'll be out with the pressure washer as usual.

There is usually a wet patch on the rear left seat and door card once I've foamed, and rinsed the car with the PW so hopefully this will have fixed it. I'll give it until sunday to set.

been chucking it down up here last couple of days ,,, nice time to discover this problem on car owned for 3 weeks !!

No chance of dry weather for a while ,,, is there a quick temp fix for this ??

Just had a dry spell and got off my arse to do this ,,,, top tip for anyone about to do this,, make sure you get some new door card fixings before you start, I snapped pretty much all of them during the process

****ed it down overnight and rear doors have let it all in !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

what kind of sealant did you use? You need to use something which sticks to wet/damp surfaces, otherwise it'll never seal properly. check where you've sealed for any obvious leaks/dribbles of water.

Hope that helps.
