APR tuning by chance?

So i currently have the custom jabbasport map on my car and its very very good.  BUT APR made me an offer I just couldn't refuse.

APR was my original choice even before i went with shark performance for my first remap anyway, mainly due to the switchable map system.  The map isnt going to cost me anything, so that wasnt a factor to consider and ill also get a water methanol injection specific map that i can switch to when using water meth for max output   B)

There was alot of oohing and ahhing over the last few days trying to decide if i should change from a remap that i am very happy with, ie why fix something that isnt broken, and Jabba were more than capable of doing the hybrid, but after a few discussions with many people, i have gone for it.

We've decided to take the modifying alot further though, we'll be sorting suspension, brakes, engine mounts etc etc.  My situation is perfect for this.  Im out of the country for 6 months, thus dont need the car, so APR are keeping it for me and going to go crazy on it on my behalf, I just fund thingslol

5-axis CNC re-profiled compressor housing and backplate

5-axis CNC re-profiled turbine housing

special clipped turbine wheel

optimized clearances

modified actuator

uprated bearing

precision balancing of individual components and CHRA

Apparently its capable of 270hp with all the bolt on parts and components you would expect a stage 3 car.  but i removed my Forge intake as it was restricting power so its the stock intake fitted currently it will choke the power for the minute, but its only a minor mod to sort.  Im not expecting 270hp by any means in all honesty, but im expecting to gain plenty over my current 216Hp, especially with a nice big intake.

Very excited.

This time next year, the car should be a very very different beast, but will have had considerably more money plowed into it than previously planned :S ,

Knowing my luck something will go wrong lol

The Polo GTI in this hot tuner challenge test is where mid like my car to  be performing (same engine/chassis/tuner etc) except my car wil have alot more power!!

Hot tuner challenge<<< Makes interesting read

Good luck mate hope it all goes well : ) gonna take me a few years too reach that stage : (

Dare I ask how much all this will cost roughly or will some of it be free so they can develop it? It's further than I'd ever go with a vRS but good for you for doing it.

I trust you have plumbed to get a tbe as well and ditch the OE exhaust to benefit the new turbo.

Software is free the rest isn't.

Looking forward to this bud, bagsy a ride ;)

I am plumbing for a BCS exhaust but think I will go with the 100 cel race cat as they are nearly the same flow rate as a de cat. Then thats my car done apart from another map. Well thats what Im telling myself lol Still fighting the the temptation to go K04

Are you just upgrading the turbocharger as I am sure there would be scope to put on a better supercharger

Are you just upgrading the turbocharger as I am sure there would be scope to put on a better supercharger emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Its just a hybrid turbo charger. Essentially it is an identical size but with a more efficient turbine and bearing setup which means it will be able to flow more air and handle more boost.

The supercharger only works until a maximum of 3500rpm and then the magnetic clutch releases it. However it rarely is engaged as long as that. The ECU disengages it as soon as peak boost is achieved and the turbo can take over 100%. Jabbasport when data logging it found this happened sometimes just above 2000rpm so it was hardly being used at all. Prior to finding this out we had been considering the use of a modified supercharger pulley but is just not worth the effort tbh.

Just caught up with this thread. Very interesting.

I rate Jabbasport very highly and you seem to have been impressed too.

Interesting to see comments on the accuracy of the rollers after some of the discussions on the Fabia mkI forum. :)

  • Author

They seem to be pretty accurate or at least equivalent to the figures i achieved with the dyno-dynamics rolling road before.

From what i hear the turbo is fitted to my car now, but they are jnow waiting on Keith@APR Motorsport to return from America to start the calibration.

in the mean time im driving around in this

DSCF1572.jpg

Its the APR Motorsport-UK Demo Golf R running stage 2+ setup. Its an absolute monster. I timed us on a 0-60 using the Racelogic Performance box with 3 guys in the car and managed a 4.1 second sprint. Its immense. Dodgy paint job though. Kind of get laughed at alot as i drive past. The young kids love it though lol

It's a nice car (mechanicaly) but every time you post a picture I can help thinking it's a bit chavtastic.

I'm looking forward to some performance figures on the Fabia when it comes back.

Will you be doing anything like a quarter mile etc... or just using a rollers?

I'd imagine it'd be quite a weapon with the DSG box. Big time saving there straight away.

It'll be going on the 1/4 mile for sure. I plan on topping the 1/4 mile 1.4TSI leaderboard which is currently being topped by an Ibiza Cupra at Santapod with a 13.4 second run. (His car is 225hp, completely stripped out, R888s etc)

My last time of of 14.2 is a bit rubbish tbh, the conditions werent exactly ideal with it being wet at Brunters, plus it suffered some pretty extreme heat soak towards the end paired with skinny 205wide conti 2 tyres, it just wasnt the ideal setup for a fast time. I think i have a good 0.5-0.8 seconds to save off the 0-60 sprint alone. Another 30-50hp(hopefully nearer to the later lol) will make up a fair amount of time as well

Still waiting on the Turbo arriving from LOBA, who reckon it should be here by the middle of next week at the latest. The good news is, because APR already have their hybrid turbo calibrated/mapped by APR it shouldnt take to long for them to get mine sorted.

It wont be an identical map though as we have completely differing setups. Even the Hybrid is completely different.

APR Australia reckon they have had 270hp @ the flywheel!!!

How come you never went with the apr turbo?

There isnt one available

So today i got my car back from APR after the initial 2 days of calibration after fitting the LOBA LO270 on wednesday night. First things of note; Its nowhere near as fast as the Golf R :giggle: , it needs better brakes, it looks like it is on stilts, the front tires have been overwhelmed in 1st/2nd gear, but the sound of the Fabia stereo is better  Oh and on my first test drive i managed to get a puncture in my rear tire :fighting:

The car with the initial higher boost BETA test map is rapid, simple as that, and it feels very very smooth.

However it was suffering misfires. Something which doesnt happen on the stock turbo/stage 2 maps. Keith has spent pretty much the entire last two days trying to fathom out exactly why the car is misfiring, it is even doing it when on idle!!! We've done 5 varieties of new plugs; all different heat grades: with varying spark plug gaps, coil packs replaced, fueling maps altered and critiqued to see if its fueling/injector related. None of this was found to be at fault. Keith did say the new coilpacks helped reduce alot of the idle misfires though.(these are on a mass back order by dealerships, so they must be changing alot on warranty)

What they have found that stops the misfires is running lower boost. This 1.4TSI engine does not like high boost. The misfire occurs at 6800rpm, so its not in everyday powerband, but its still there and needs sorting. Over the next few months they plan on getting around this issue either with software or hardware tweaks, because essentially its pointless paying <£2k for the hybrid turbo if your not going to run it at its potential.

Another thing we have highlighted is the DSG isnt happy right now. From a rolling start there doesn't appear to be an issue, however from a standing start its spitting its dummy out, so more work is being doen to find out the limits of the box itself. I feel that there might be a need for a DSG remap though! or we'll just be limiting the midrange to stay within limits.

The purpose of today at Santapod was to test the BETA files against the limits of the DSG/engine etc, find weaknesses, flaws etc. We tried various settings on maps today to see what maps worked better, or with no interference from the DSG. Keith plans on spending a few months of R&D on it over the next few weeks/months and whilst im working away from May-Nov so ill be coming back to a much different car.

TBH, i think i have been my own worst enemy on this one. I knew keith had only 2 days worth of calibration completed due to the LOBA turbo not arriving as early as expected, plus i knew keith was investigating the misfires, yet for some reason i expected to be receiving a near completed car

Currently driving around on a low boost map. Still bloody quick though!!

Its also a pleasure to see an indicated 47mpg again  Even managed 36mpg on the way there in convoy and at points we were making some serious progress. two of the guys, 1 in a stage 2 Golf R, the other a TTRS stage 2 were pretty impressed at mine

Final results will hopefully be available in the next couple months once they development is complete

Think i know who il be handing my car to when it comes to more power, there doing some amount of R&D to sort the problems :)

So........what times did it put in??

sounds like you are pushing it past its limits sy... hope it doesn't go bang.

@ VRS-POWERED

Im not going to be releasing any times for it until the whole R&D is done and the map is complete because its not reflective on the finished product which is some time away. Yesterday was a testing process trying differing setups resulting from 2 days of calibration. This is unknown territory with this turbo on this engine, and were talking weeks, maybe months of solid development left till this map is ready for release, believe me, when you work with APR you see h much of a company they are.

The times are faster than my previous time, but my start is worse. Cannot get any traction at all. The terminals are higher though.

@ Sharkrider

We are nowhere near the limits of the pistons/rods or the limits of the turbo. The issue we have are why it is misfiring.

I do see where you are coming from though, and this is why i chose to work with APR for this development. As a tuning company they are unrivaled when it comes to R&D and revenue. No other UK company can compete with them on that front. My car is now under their care as it is the BETA test car. All i have paid for is the turbo. Any other works required to make this happen, or any damage caused by the development phase are completely covered by APR. These guys do not shy away from spending money at all.

As said in the 2 days they have been working on the car, they have tried the older revised OEM plugs, the new revised OM plugs, bespoke Audi A1 (185ps) plugs, NGK BKR 6EIX, NGK BKR 7EIX, NGK BKR 8EIX and NGK BKR 9EIX plugs along with coilpacks at no cost to myself. This is them learning about the car and how it is effected by different setups. Thats probably in excess of £200 there straight away.

APR have already said to me If we need uprated internals, or a different compression ratio, then that is what will happen. If a DSG remap is required, then that will happen as well. This is an ongoing project that will be going on until November, so im not worried about it at all.

So, i to hope it doesnt go bang as well lol, but if it does i am in very safe hands.

The added bonus isi now know:

My turbo is healthy.

My Spark plugs are healthy

My Coilpacks are healthy

My Injectors are healthy

My Piston rings are healthy(they have done a compression test. All is good)

The 5 items above are where the most common issues with the 1.4TSi lie with respect to the warranty etc. (FWIW theres a massive backlog on coilpacks due to the amount of warranty replacements going back to before xmas!!)
