TYRE WEAR - MKII VRS

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wondering what sort of tyre wear you are experiencing with the new VRS.

Ive just done 5000 miles (over 6 months) and have the conti's.

The front tyres only have a couple of mm left on the legal side where as the rear are almost as good as new.

I run the tyres between 36-38psi and the wear has been extremely even on the tyre.

I don't do any track days and drive sensibly with the odd bit of fun now and again but not for any extended period of time.

Have changed them over to maximise useability (I know i will have to replace all 4 at the same time in the end!)

Just wondering if this sort of wear is normal/typical as I've seen some 'tyre topics' where people are talking about getting anything up to 15000 and sometimes more beofore replacement! If thats the case my driving must be poor!!!!

Be interested in your experiences

Conti's are a softer compound than the Dunlops (which I did 16000 miles on with 2 track sessions) so they'll wear quicker. Recommended PSI is 33-34 I think but a couple of PSI won't have made a huge difference. You should get at least 10k out of the Conti's.

Can't suggest a reason why your's have worn quicker :|

currently on 14k on the Dunlops....

inside edge is now starting to wear...

I think it might be like this that people forget that the car after all have 180 bhp and you tend to use them...

Quite alot in fact x).

I'm impressed with the 14k TBH

Will have to see how the wearing go's now that the rears are on the front!

hopefully will get 10,000 out of the full set but that still seems quite low considering that'll be for the entire set.

Perhaps i'm putting my foot down more thaan i realise!

Will have to review some new rubber well in advance to ensure i get some more durable tyres next.

ive done 8000 miles on mine and still have a lot of tread left all round (5mm+) i do give them a good thrash but im not doing burnouts or anything

currently on 14k on the Dunlops....

inside edge is now starting to wear...

Hope the wife's don't do 14k, they are utter utter Rubbish

The Dunlops will last as its the harder compound that makes them, and the same hard compound that makes them crap and unsuited to the VRS.

My continental's are in much the same position. I've done 7,500 so far and they are looking close to replacement. Probably only got another two thousand miles in them.

I'm glad to hear someone else in the same predicament as I was worried something was up with the car. I know mine get mistreated with lots of acceleration on 1 in 4 hills. I live on top of a big hill and can't avoid them!

Glad to know it's not just me!

Yeah. Same here.

frustrating though when i see others getting 12,000 + out of the same tyres and prob won't see 8,000!!!

And believe me although i enjoy the car i'm no boy racer in it!

Also depends on what type of miles.

I know members on the vwaudi forums who struggle to get 10k miles out of Conti Sports but they tend to drive around town and twisty roads alot. Plenty of turning accelerating and braking. Myself and others easily get 20k+ out of the same tyres but over 50 percent of my driving is cruising on the motorway.

Cheers

My miles are mainly on national speed limit twisty country roads with lots of hills. Live on top of one and work on top of another one across the other side of the valley! Not a good combination. Plus the rural roads round here are not in the best condition which can't help either. It's always surprised my dad how quick I get through tyres, but then he was doing nearly all his miles on the motorway.

Just wish they'd last a little longer due to the cost but I know the expensive tyres help with the handling!

Road type would make sense as i live in south wales, 99% of my journeys are on twisty, hilly roads which do not always have the best surfaces.

Could be part of the problem i suppose.

Where in south Wales? i have not seen any Vrs around here. i live in caerphilly and i am having a similar wear rate.

Ebbw Vale way mate.

Bit further up the valley.

Good to know its not just me with the problem. Perhaps it is as simple as the fact were on valleys roads!!
