:D

Oops I missed that one. It is pretty small though

Only 5 topics so far.

I think it looks like a great car for those wanting a small car. Should put up a good fight with the VW / Seat offering.

Trouble is it may be a useful percentage cheaper than the VW, but it isn't that many £s cheaper ultimately. I can see retired people wanting the VW badge for a small premium. Hope it does well though :)

I wonder how this ASG gearbox they mention is going to work, perhaps it's like DSG but with only a single clutch or something.

Saw them testing one of these around Prague last week - must have a look through the photos for the reg number!

Hi James,

The ASG gearbox is the new VW SQ100 unit. It is not related in any way to the DSG system. It is an automated manual in the same vein as the Fiat Duologic, Citroen EGS etc...... Apparently it has additional motorisation to make it much smoother than these traditionally more jerky transmissions. Hopefully, as with the Fiat system, it will improve both fuel economy and reduce co2. I am looking forward to reading the first review of it.

Shrub.

p.s My Yeti that you supplied me eighteen months ago is still going great. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I use the fiat system in the ducato ambulance, and it works fine, I hate it in auto, as it changes up and down all the time and "hunts" especially annoying in the middle of corners.... but in "manual" mode, simply changing by tapping the lever forward or backwards its good... exactly the same as a manual, but with no clutch... unlike the DSG , of corse there is a delay in the gearchange, but no more than if you were doing it yourself.. best way to think of it is like a manual car, but with a motorised clutch....

Sounds an identical system to the Renault Master minibus I used to drive. Great in manual mode in the dry, but would light the front tyres up big time in 1st & 2nd. Auto in the wet, well.....

Hi Jason,

That is pretty interesting. Is it 5,6 or 7 speed do you know? I would have thought with the smaller engine the designers would try to maximise the number of gears to get the most out of the engine but if the gearbox is not as smooth as DSG then perhaps it is more convential.

I'm looking forward to driving it when it arrives, I actually think it looks nice and I'm sure it will be good value. I'm pretty certain it's going to be a success for Skoda, just think how many Citroen C1, Aygos, etc you see everywhere, even if the Citigo gets hold of a small share of the market it will still be good numbers for Skoda.

Glad the Yeti is performing well, hope you're looking after it nicely!

Hi James,

From what I have read the ASG gearbox has the same five speed internals as the manual version. It is only the shift mechanism that is automated. It needs to cost no more than about £500 more than the manual though or it will look a bit expensive I reckon.

I like the Citigo as well and the report in Autocar this week is very positive. Not sure I'd swap the Yeti for one but if I do you'll be the first to know!

Looks good in the green in their photos.

They're wrong about "no tax free model" though, the Greenlines will be under 100g/km CO2.

Let's hope they don't wait too long before releasing the Greenline after the standard cars.

They would make a lot of sense in London.

I see Autoexpress has managed to get as much as 32.9 mpg out of the VW Up....

Yeah I saw a review of the "up" too, I must say I thought it looked okay and the interior looked very nice with lots of gloss back shiny bits. The Seat version looks okay but they just seem so plain inside.

I might be being thick here, but why's it only getting 32.9mpg? or is that all town driving?

Why have Auto Express said that road tax for a Citigo will be £35 after the first year? Surely emissions below 110g/km mean it'll be £20??? There isn't even a £35 option any more!

the first years road tax is higher than from then on... new rules.

Probably, and some performance testing too. All the cars in the group test recorded a similar MPG.

New rules? They only changed in 2010! The first year is free for all cars up to 120g/km CO2, and thereafter it's £20 for up to 110g/km, and £30 for 120g/km. Therefore the Citigo should only be £20 after the first 'free' year. My Aygo only costs £20 for a year! Link

When has anything newer than this been announced?

Yes, 'What Car' seem to like it as well.

IMO the Citigo is better looking than the VW Up! - the rear window treatment on the VW looks fussy (why spoil a straight line?) and the front grin on the VW is too cutesy for my liking - perhaps women will prefer it more. Then there's also the full length glass rear on the VW - how much is that going to cost when it shatters?

It speaks volumes for how Skoda have progressed when all the talk is around the comparison between the Citigo and the Up! The poor old Seat Mii has a bit of an identity crisis, it's like "the other brother".

For me the outsides are too similar - as I've stated before.. Took me weeks before I noticed that VW spent a ton of money to give the rear side windows an upwards kink. Thus giving the car less light inside. They spent all that money to press different side panels to then not even get it noticed.

But to me it is the interiors that clinch the deal. The Seat, as ever, has a horridly plastic light grey dash in seemingly every version of the Mii. The Škoda dash looks a bit better but is also the same colour in all models. Go to VW and you have a real quality looking interior. Some in body colour, white or the best one: the piano black. The VW dash looks miles and miles better than the other two to my eyes. And that is where you'll be spending most of your time.

As to glass rear doors: the C1/107 have these too and I've never heard of issues about them shattering or costing the earth. They are on a cheap car so logic would dictate it is cost effective solution over steel and to me it looks good on the Up!
