Who says you can't have fun with 2WD Yeti in snow

Featured Replies

Hi All

I found this youtube video just now. Not seen it before, so apologies if you have already seen it before.

Looks like they had fun....emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

That does look like fun

Rockhopper, I've stumbled across this video before, certainly looked good fun.

The dark red one that got pulled out with the girl driving looked to be a petrol 4x4, once pulled out it climbs the hill and the video cuts to the top, as it drives by I'm sure it has a TSI 4x4 badge, it also has a fair amount of spray throwing off the rear wheels??

i knew i should have got the yeti instead of the fabia vrs.

Looks terrific fun-so, who has a large snowy landscape for us to play on?

I couldn't help noticing that the successful tug was Aqua blue!

Rather a clear indication that the Aqua blue Yeti is the grippiest colour!

and definitely 4x4.....

Rockhopper, did you have another look at the video, do you think the SM stuck was 4x4, only ask because it didn't look too deep now concerned my SM when it arrives will not cope with the snow where I live.

Looking at the way the undertray is flattening the snow, that red one was beached.

As the captions tell us, the Yetis in the video are:

Aqua Blue (1.8, 4x4, manual), Candy White (1.2, 4x2, manual), Corrida Red (1.2, 4x2, automatic DSG), Rosso Brunello (1.8, 4x4, manual).

However, the questions about what tyres were on the successful tug have not been answered. Anyone who can be bothered feeding http://club-yeti.com/ (the origin of the video) into Google Translate might be able to find out more.

Your right, brilliant spot!

One of the people present at that event has commented that the loose snow was sitting on top of hard-packed ice, so the conditions were pretty challenging (though not uncommon in Scotland).

First thing I did was turn the music down... But then I listened to it. Hehehe. The lyrics are singing about Yetis!!!!! Bless.

Good on these 2wd cars tackling that amount of snow. Wow. On summer rubber?! Never. They must have all had winter rubber on I suspect.

Are they from Poland. Are they one of the countries where you have to use winter tyres?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

They are from Russia (outside Moscow).

From a russian Yeti forum: http://www.club-yeti.com/

Go to http://www.club-yeti.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=470

There you find the video. From 23rd of february this year (2011).

And there are more videos on page 10.

Only the red and the white one seems to be 2wd.

It took place at Бронницах (Bronnitsy) , 50 km SE of Moscow. Here's a different video of the same event:

As can be seen when it reaches the top of the hill towing another car, the Aqua Blue Yeti, reg P188 AM 197, is wearing tyres with a full winter tread pattern, but apparently without studs.

So it seems 4WD and unstudded winter tyres not only provide enough grip to get him up the hill, but enough to let him pull other cars up the hill. On loose snow. Over hard-packed ice. As Clarkson would say. Instead of writing sentences.

Did they catch the armed bandit who held them up?

Except maybe the ones outside pushing :))

In Poland the Real Men do not use winter tyres.

But fortunately there's less and less of them. And more tombstones :giggle:

I think the red and white ones are 1.2 (on the youtube description) and obviously had difficult in the snow...not sure about winter tires...

and one of the 1.2 cars was a DSG!!! An automatic in that amount of snow would be challenging unless you really knew how to drive. Top marks all round but there is no way they were doing that on summer rubber :wonder:

I drove in similar depth of snow in my Octavia earlier this year and it beached and stuck fast :smirk:

Automatic and 4x4 no problem.emoticon-0110-tongueout.gif

a 1.2 dsg is not 4x4 which was my point, it's easy in a 4x4, 2wd takes more skill :p

Not neccessarily!

If the snow is too deep and builds up under the front undertray, thereby lifting the front of car off the surface, all that will happen is that the rear wheels will push it even further in, lifting them off the deck as well.

Result one VERY stuck car!!

That sure looked like a lot of fun!!

I'd say they were all on winter tyres - in that amount of loose snow you are not going anywhere with summer tires, 4wd or not.

This video also shows that also the 2WD SM is quite capable in snowy conditions with the right tires (winter tires that is). Last winter I noticed that were I effortlessly could cruise through the snow masses normal height cars (such as Volvo V70s) got stuck, so the extra ride height really does help a lot. On the other hand, last winter was the first time I have had to dig myself out of a snow pile  (actually twice) but that was because I parked the SM in places I would never even have thought of in a "standard" car.

But the DSG can be put into manual ;)
