1.2 TSi beaten by Ford's new unit.

Featured Replies

Looks like Ford is hotting up the new direct injection turbo charged petrol war.

They have announced details of their 3 cylinder, 1.0 litre ecoboost engine. It will come with 100PS or 125PS (98bhp or 123bhp) with 170NM (200NM on overboost) available from 1300rpm.

The engine block is so small the entire block can sit inside a single sheet of A4 paper.

125PS 1.0 3cylinder Ecoboost will debut in the Focus with 56.5mpg.

The 1.2TSi Vag unit in the Fabia has 105PS and 53.3mpg so on intitial figures it looks like the Ford unit should be quite good and in the Fiesta sized car economy should be nearly 60mpg. I hope they have managed to keep the unit sweet and free revving while retaining an off beat 3 cylinder engine note.

So when will VAG react? The 1.2TSi 4 cylinder ought to be looking for 135bhp do we think?

VAG have said the new 1.6TSi with VNT will be good for 180-240bhp depending on model which will push the 2.0TSi into the 270+bhp category. They have already said the 1.4 TSi unit will be discontinued and higher output 3 cylinder TSi will arrive. So if the new 3 cylinder TSi matches Fords figures that will leave the 1.2TSi to fill in above 125bhp.

One confusing one is Audi are now using a new frugal 1.8TSi.

All very interesting anyway. :smirk:

Will be interesting to try these. Although I've not yet been impressed with the vibration from 2 and 3 cylinder 'Eco' engines so far.

Not tried the Fiat twin air unit, Once bought a new Alfa, will not touch an Italian car again (Unless it has a bull on the front). Vauxhall's three cylinder N/A engine is a dog, vibrates on tickover, thrums as the revs rise and doesn't like to rev. VAG's 1.2 12V I think is great for a 3, smooth and sweet revving with a characterfull scoobyesque boxer engine sound.

Should be plenty of room in the Focus engine bay to put in good enough engine mounts to smooth vibrations but the low compression ratio and direct injection should lessen any big issues, quite looking forward to hear what a 3 cylinder petrol running a decent amount of boost will sound like, maybe even more scoobyesque.

I wonder what the mpg score would be if Skoda just added start/stop to the TSi.

The ibiza 1.2 TSI range has it so.. my guess would be look on their forum and see? :)

Didn't know that, then again it's near impossible to find out anything from the Seat site. Anyway, looks like 55mpg with start/stop.

I'm not too bothered about stop/start, it's just a ploy to significantly lower the urban Euro fuel tests. Unless you spend all day in the city centre then it has negligable benifits in the real world.

I had a Passat Bluemotion for a week, if the stop/start operated a couple of times during my 60 mile commute I was lucky.

The extra power interests me more, start talking 140bhp from a very small capacity 1.2 petrol engine, a 7 speed DSG for motorway cruising and a significantly cheaper purchase price than a 2.0TDi then the package becomes very tempting. Even in an Octavia/Superb

If VAG could produce the same specific output on the 1.2TSi as Ford have on the 1.0 then we'd be looking at a 150bhp 1.2TSi.

I totally agree - just assuming the Ford has s/s as it's clearly an 'eco' package.

There are 140bhp remaps for the 1.2TSi, for example (first hit from Google):

Taking it further might need a larger turbo, then maybe sacraficing low-end pickup - the TSi generate 100nm at 1,000rpm (can't find the chart now!).

hmm, while I'm sure the TSI can stand more power quite happily, I would not want to lose the driveability it currently has.

Being able to drive around lazily at 2k rpm is brilliant and helps you get better mpg.

A 1.2 TSI running 125bhp to 130bhp would hit the spot I reckon :)

No official word from Ford at launch but wikipedia says the 1.0 Ecoboost is producing maximum torque at only 1300rpm which if true is astounding, drivability looks better than the Tsi at that.

If those figures are true I think Ford may be running a VNT Turbo same as VAG have suggested they will be running on the new 200bhp 1.6TSi in the Polo R. VNT on Petrol turbo's is the next major step forward IMO.

125ps, 200nm at 1300rpm...hmmm now we're talking and even I would be interested to try one! How could I get that engine in a motorcycle is my next question?

Those are roughly the figures claimed by my TMC tuning box (125PS + 225NM). It certainly seems to live up to that and throws -10% fuel consumption in too for good measure

Blinkin brilliant Fatbloke! :o

Impressive would be quite interesting in a fiesta sized car the fiesta needs a small turbo petrol engine

Yeah, in a Fiesta it sounds very appealing! So, when will VAG pop a VNT turbo onto the 1.2? B)

Just noticed the ecoboost 1.0 125PS and the VAG 1.6TSi 200PS have the spame specific output 125PS/Litre.

So we need the 150bhp 1.2TSi. :)

Isn't Ford's ECO boost technology predicated on temporary transient overboosts in output?

Isn't Ford's ECO boost technology predicated on temporary transient overboosts in output?

The quoted power outputs have to be constant under EU requirements, so it will be a rated for a constant 125PS. Ford do quote two figures for torque 170NM constant and 200NM during transient overboost.

I had a Mondeo TDCi 243lbft and 265lbft on overboost and the extra torque is certainly welcome when overtaking or joining motorway lanes etc. Transient overboost is only permitted when temperatures and other perameters are met and usually for 15-25 seconds.

Woah!!!!.......hmmmmmm.....that looks good...I knew about the tuning for the 1.4TSI....but not for the 1.2TSI.....how do you find the driveability/charicter of the car???

Only reason that I ask is that IF my Fabia has an accident and I have to replace I would be looking at a Roomster (I know...) with the 1.2TSI engine but with the Manual box...not the DSG! ...do you need to have the cruise control to swap maps etc????..B)

We also have cylinder shutdown to come on the VAG TSIs which will boost economy further.

Not many to go at when you only have 3... :giggle:

If the new benchmark seems to be 125bhp/litre with max torque from 1300rpm and good economy then paying a premium for diesel is going to seem a bit pointless unless you do mega miles. Future looks interesting.
