brake pad options.?

Featured Replies

I did try to use speed bleeders (external, not the valves shown), but found that often they left a tiny bubble of air in the brake system, due to leaky nipples. Also, using brake pedal to pump fluid is less effective than pressure/vacuum bleed, as the dirt is not shifted as efficiently.

Best results I got so far over 2 cars / 8 fluid changes are with vacuum bleed, I connect vacuum oil extractor (TP69) to the brake nipple through an old Gunson bottle (to see the quantity better), and I replenish fluid with a gunson bottle venting to open air (where normally tyre is connected as air supply). No air bubbles and few spills, as anything spilled is sucked out by the vacuum.

But single Gunson connected to a spare tyre and doing pressure bleed works almost as well, just a bit more spillage at each wheel if you are not careful. Don't overdo the air pressure, though, or master cylinder seals will pop.

So I am I right in thinking the 2.5 TDI uses the same calipers as the 1.9 but bigger carriers. So all I'd need to upgrade the brake size is the carriers?

Yes, you need the carriers and of course the bigger discs. So best to do this upgrade during brake disc/pad change.

Yes and obviously the discs :p

I'll definitely be doing this. As I had 294mm discs on my last car which was a mini now I have a car which weighs far more with smaller discs. So the brakes are less than confidence inspiring.

So what car can I get them from? Any VAG with the 2.5V6 TDi?

This would be good

4B0615125A, 1998-2005 A6 and numerous high powered Golfs and Passats are your best bet. Dealership price is ridiculous, 100quid each, best to get them from scrapyard.

Could someone confirm this is correct regarding caliper carriers -

4B0615125A for 288mm disc.?

1J0615125A for 312mm disc.?

im assuming the 1J0615125A will mate upto the std superbs calipers? obviously with 312mm discs.

312mm discs calipers are 4B0615125A as stated earlier

1J part suggests Golf/Passat B6 platform, these use different bearings and driveshafts and likely result in different carriers.

You need Passat B5/B5.5 carriers, the old shape one, and I think Golf Mk4.

I'm looking at doing the discs and pads on my 2004 Superb Comfort 1.9TDI 130bhp, (sticking to standard as I'm on a tight budget but obviously want good braking), and was looking at Brembo discs - although i'm a little bit confused as they're showing three options, whereas ETKA only shows one Part No. My chassis number is 5xxxxxxx, so it appears that i need the '09.A428.14' discs, but would like comfirmation that i'm reading the details correct please: http://bremboaftermarket.com/En/Car_Disc_Catalogue/Catalogue_Detail.aspx?ApplicationIDMaster=23021 - have found these on Amazon at £40!!! :o

I'm looking at probably fitting Brembo Discs Front & Rear, and Jurid pads (from GSF) - as i recently replaced my Discs/Pads on my 2001 Toledo TDI with this combination, (Brembo rear pads), and was pleasently surprised with the results - that is of course, unless one of you come back and tell me i'm better with something else, e.g. Pagid pads/Discs/etc? ;)
