How do I remove the surround from the Columbus. Need to investigate a rattle?

Featured Replies

Does the surround from around the Columbus just pop off?my dash has developed an annoying squeek/rattle from around the Columbus. I don't want to start guessing how to remove the Columbus. Can anybody help?

On the Octavia they just pop off on lugs. Pull very carefully from near the ashtray and work round.

I'm sure it will be similar on the Superb.

It's similar

Make sure that the key is out of the ignition if you are removing the surround completely (unplugging air-bag light). You may get a fault message if the key is turned while this is disconnected.

It's a plastic thingy you use to pull panels off that is soft enough not to mark the trim plastics.  I always called them a plastic bone.  Check ebay for something like this:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/6pc-Car-Body-Dash-Door-Trim-Panel-Wedge-Clip-Remover-Removal-Tool-Set-F198124-/231070347188?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35ccddafb4&_uhb=1

Otherwise, for the Columbus surround, you can pull it off by hand.  At the bottom, where it folds back  under the unit, use your fingers to pull straight out and it will start to unclip.

Avoid using a flat screwdriver as that will mark the trim plastics.

I have a couple of trim removers, meant for laptop dismantling really. I tried teasing out the Columbus surround but I think it probably needs more force than I am willing to apply with the removers or my fingers. I guess that first time removal is a bit stiff and a leap of faith.

Old credit card does the trick. I started on a top corner and worked round. Other tip is run the heater and warm the car up...makes the plastic less brittle. Or wait to summer.

Cheers James!

I didnt know it was THAT easy until saw this thread.

Thought modern car stereo s were built-in such that difficult to remove!

Anyway, back to OP ...

I eventually popped the trim starting near the hazard switch as I wasn't getting anywhere from the bottom. Dropped a Torx re-assembling so had to pop the Climatronic trim as well to get the screw back.

I was interested in getting the trim off too, but I would really like to know where I can get the complete instructions / manual now???

It's called ELSAWin.  You could find a torrent of it (if you're into that sort of thing)  :nerd:

There is also apparently a website where you can pay by the day to get access to it but I don't know where that is.
