Mer Polish, Not Impressed..

Featured Replies

hi all

after spending a few hours getting the octy clean, I thought I would trear her to a good polishing, well I bought some mer, after years of walking round car shows and seeing the guy with the mini bonnet (they all seem to be bright red) I thought I would give it a go......

Not really that impressed, the car is shiny but only as shiny as the cheap stuff I used before....and this business of leaving the polish at least ten minutes before buffing off (it dries to a light haze) it has left smear marks under the shine if you know what I mean? I used a decent stockinette to put it on and a proper polishing cloth to buff so its not that...and it wasnt sunny or reallly hot either, though the bottle says it doesnt matter...

maybe I put too much on? anyway just my thoughts after spending almost two hours waxing and polishing...:(

Get some Swissol.

Initial outlay is fairly high but the results are awesome. Its very easy to apply, I can wash and wax in about an hour. Ongoing costs are much cheaper than rival brands.

Have a look at Fen's thread, the results say it all.

:D

Yup, Swissol is the way to go.

There's nothing else going on my car now. Look at the pics in My Styling FAQ and judge for yourself.

Cheers,

Howard

Go get Swissoled, you know it makes sense !!

Also try Zymol - there is a new cleaner wax version sold at Halfords.

They also do a very expensive kit version a la Swissol.

I was very pleased with the results - it gives a deep glossy shine and it smells of bananas!

So, you're convinced now Q? Are you sure? Really?

Told you it was good! :D

Not a word was lied Jon! I'm saving up already to let Mark do the after winter/before summer job next year.

Better stay away from Safari parks then :D

As for Mer, i've been using it for almost 15 years, no complaints, just an endless string of compliments on how nice my cars always look.

The Zymol stuff from Halfords smells of coconuts...Swissol smells like banannas...I remember when polish just smelt of polish!

Mark let us smell quite a few waxes he had, and each one had a nice tropical smell about it. Makes the whole cleaning experience just that little bit more extra :)

I'm waiting for the wax that smells of bacon sandwich myself ;)

Mers is an ok polish but its old technology.

But swiisol is too expensive compared to Meguires or Autoglym which if you use correctly it will give the same results.

3M Cleaner Clay, 3M Perfect It III Fine Compound, 3M Imperial Hand Glaze and then Zymol Titanium Wax for me...

Although saying that, I've had my Fabia for almost a year now and I've not applied the above to it yet (she's been getting Diamondbrited cos I'm lazy!!)

I love Gloss guard, it is the consistancy of water so goes on very quickly and i can do the whole car in 20 mins! also leaves the best shine i have ever come across.

Mer = Old tech........

How true. I bought a bottle of that when they had a motorshow at the G-Mex centre.......thats over a decade ago IIRC.......

It was horrble to use then though.

I've tried Autoglym stuff, various flavours of turtle-wax, an assortment of "wash-n-go" type affairs........

It might take a bit longer on first time, but tbh, the Swissol stuff is untouchable in my experience.

I'm (yet again) so very impressed, I started a new thread.....

Firstly any product of any range does the same job in the same way, so if it hasn't worked, you did it wrong!

Mer is a polish, if you have ever polished a pair of shoes you begin with lots of polish to remove film, dirt and grime. Then decrease the amount to an almost invisible drop to give the deep shine suitable to shave using.

So the same as a car, for it to smear firstly you used to much that instead of removing a light grime it started removing old wax's, polishes or possibly laquer. Only ever use small amounts of any product on a cars paint work! (even shampoo)

Also you can leave Mer for 10 minutes, you can also leave it for 3 weeks, it does the same effect, but obviously too long discolours paint, the same as bird poo.

Also a bit of advice, always use modern microfibre clothes, it does actually work better! (no matter what your parents ever said about your first car)

And finally, if Mer didnt work Germany wouldnt have used it to polish aircraft and vehicles to help protect from rust, and nobody can disagree that German machinary is nearly always better and lasted longer than ours. And if you ever buy a brand new BMW or Merc from Germany, ask which polish their professional valeters use? And they are oh-so-shiny!

Holy thread revival Batman!!!

Somebody has spent waaaaaaaaaay too long going through the archives

I don't recognise any of the OP's...so the point of reviving this was?

I fear it might just cause more confusion. There are far, far better alternatives to Mer nowadays. Used to use it on my dad's ancient Peugeot 406. I don't miss it!

I thought Mer came out to polish caravans and boats about 20 years ago - when this thread started.

Well there's an old guy lives near me, swears by Mer, his 15 year old 4x4 looks like it just came out of the showroom. He's also got 3 or 4 motorbikes of varying ages & they all sparkle with it.

I've got some Auto Glym Super Resin polish & I must be doing something wrong, as it always looks worse.

Now I just wash with a touch of Auto Glym shampoo

(2 bucket method & dreadlock things not sponges)

then straight to some Triplewax Easy On Easy Off liquid wax.

Christ on a Purple Raleigh Chopper, The Original thread start date was over 6 whole years ago.

I doubt that any of the original posters are still active members

Leave it alone. Please!!!

People aren't trawling the archves per se...

there's a box appears below the quick reply box marked "similar threads",

sometime the contents of that are pretty old.

Personally I just saw the title & it reminded me that my neighbour was out with his Mer again when I passed the other day. It's still a widely sold & popular product, especially on the classic scene & I suspect that many users of it have done so for far longer than 6 years. I'd certainly say that my neighbour gets a better result than I do, despite my superior modern product.

Darren = simple way to check, ask him to use mer on yours, show you how its done whilst you make cuppas for him. he may have mastered the technique for using it?
