I should have said earlier that my brother owns a workshop so i wouldn't be charged to have the tyres swapped. Not really thought about damaging the wheels. We only keep cars for 3 years as they are motability cars so not sure they would get too damaged in that time. Now you've got me thinking.

Winter tyres and wheels ordered from MyTyres on Monday evening,one wheel and tyre delivered today, the other three are still in Germany,not happy as they told me it will be sometime next week before I get them.

Whichever route you choose must comply with Skoda recommended fitments and you must inform Motability when you change from normal to winter tyres and visa versa.

Don't worry though, so long as the winter wheels and tyres do comply then Motability are fine with it, oh and they won't pay for them.

I DID ask

Had mine fitted yesterday and rang them.

All they do is put a note on the vehicle record of the change.

OK.. I want to get some winter tyres for my L&K 170PS

 

17" wheels and tyres are a big step up in price.

My dealer says 16" will be OK.

So far so good....

 

But I am finding this a bit of a minefield... I think :)
Or perhaps I am just confusing myself?

 

Looking at mytyres.co.uk

 

Option 1: Complete set of wheels - Steel. with Goodyear Ultra Grip GW-3 216/60 R16 95H - £150.40 = £601.60

but looking at alloys it comes up with a different tyre size

Option 2: Complete set of wheels - Enzo -B Silver Alloys - Goodyear Ultra Grip 205/55/R16 at  £634 per set

 

That price for alloys plus tyres seems attractive.

But is it what I want to have?

I went with these last year and they've been excellent.

They were fitted with a set of Hankook W310 215/60R16 99H tyres (matching the manufacturers' spec) and found them to be utterly reliable. I've just had them put back on.

 

If you look a few submissions back, there's a photo of them on.

Oh if you want to fit chains to the front e.g. winter sking trips then you need 205/55 R16 94H, otherwise 215/60 R16 95H (or 99H) are possibly a better option but you can only use chains on the back (obviously 4x4 only)

I don't have a problem with having winter tyres fitted as there are real benefits to having them, but I think if I get some I will have to fit them to my original alloys as I dont like the thought of paying all that money for a great looking Yeti then spoiling it for several months a year by putting little steel wheels on that in my opinion look pretty dreadful. I realize a set of 17" tyres will be more than 16" but I figure I will save money by not forking out for a set of steels or cheap alloys.

Errrr not in my experience.

The 17" tyres cost MORE than the same 16" tyres AND a steel rim.

You could find some cheap Audi alloys on the wonderful bay of 'E'.

Wheels are at risk of being damaged each time a tyre is changed; plus there is the disturbance to the sidewall and beading of the tyre each time its taken on / off a rim.

 

IMHO its best to get a second set of wheels.

Big surprise this morning, the other three wheels were delivered. All now fitted and a set of Halfords plastic trims to smarten them up. The only fault I found was one wheel had a poorly seated valve, and when moving it I could hear air escaping, this resulted in a visit to a local tyre firm who kindly fitted a new valve.

One other thing which may be useful, I got Avon Ice Breaker ST tyres, and when I unpacked them they all looked like they were for one side, a quick phone to local tyre dealer who said they are assymetric and as long as the word "OUTER" is on the outer then they can go on any wheel, even though the tread looks opposite.

TIBET II now mit Nokian WR D3 shod Matterhorns....  :happy:

Well it was a LOVELY sunny day on Saturday so took the plunge and changed the wheels over. FAR easier than last year when my locking nuts on the front two wheels were so tight I had to get (very) specialist help to get them off.  So all went smoothly:

My tyres live inside those cosy individual covers on the tyre tree and these also tell you which wheel is which.  And well after the talk about the rotation I checked before putting them on and I drove all of last winter with the two front tyres the wrong way around! Oops. Now fixed.

 

 

This is now also the first year I have a winter spare (thanks to Rockhopper selling me his).

The rubber mats (yes I have two so that one can be dragged forward over the middle seat leather bits to protect it when I have a full load in the back) has that awkward shape at the boot lip due to Škoda only making boot mats for the lowest floor...  Anyway, so with the thicker winter spare the floor is higher by an inch or so. In order to cover this gap a bit better I had to turn the rubber mats around. So the word Yeti is no readable to the people in the back seats (should they look through the gap with the middle seat down).  :giggle:

(And yes that is MUD everywhere on my Yeti - outside, inside on the mats, on the bumper... everywhere!)  :giggle:

Anyone else running michelin alpines? Put two on the front of the abarth and when it comes on boost it'll now wheelspin in third. Wondering if it's just a bit warm or whether they're soaked in mould release agent and need some scrubbing in. The nokians on the yeti stick like limpets in comparison.

Find our Fabia's even with winters still slip a little, in the snow particularly. Put this down to the very light weight of the car as they have small aluminium petrol engines.

 

Would imagine your 'pocket rocket' would be similar but with wheel spin added in due to the torque and nose lift associated with front 2wd.

I trust you don't have winters on the front and summers on the back?!?! That's a huge, huge no no. Just Google some videos on that on YouTube. You'll soon see what happens in a slippery corner where the front has far more grip than the back.

I have alpins all round on the yeti.

Temps round here are hovering around 7'c at the moment.

No wheelspin here. I can plant the lead boot to the floor from standstill and they just grip, then grip some more even on wet road.

So it would seem the light weight over the front wheels of the 500 is probably the issue?

I would definitely get winters on the back, as johann said, as well though

I've had the winter wheels on for a month now.  But where is the winter?

Please excuse my ignorance but even though I'me a newbie I've followed much of this thread but am still slightly confused. I have looked at the wheel specs posted by The Plumber (now can't find that post) and the Grip alloys as suggested a few posters earlier but they only seem to come in 6.5J, and not sure about offsets, so are they a good legal buy or not? Thanks
