The full horror of BT broadband is upon me!

Featured Replies

BT are shocking and they throttle your connection as their network can't cope.

This is true, but the real problem the OP has is with Sky.

They throttle their connections even more.

Location is the real issue in the UK.

Some exchanges, despite being upgraded to fibre still don't work right, and the punters experrience no speed increase.

Often there seems no direct logical patterns to where has good speeds, and where doesn't. Highly inconsistent.

Having spoken to a fair few OpenReach engineers now, the copper network is in a serious state in many rural areas.

In my last house, the telephone cables had to repaired ata least twice a year, due to wind/tree damage.

I did notice after BT big crash in Birmingham had been sorted, the latency of internet access in my part of Devon almost doubled.

I think you are getting confused between BITS and BYTES (b & B)

900kB = 7.2Mb

It doesnt help that some people and programs report in BYTES and others in BITS, or even worse, use both " I only get 500kB on my 5Mb connection" for example.

ADSL problems, and a phone can start to cause problems on the line while showing so problems during voice calls.

Had to double check myself there.........post was stated correctly as MB and kB (Bytes).....as this is what I have my stats grid on "Bitmeter" set to.....as I work in kB, MB, GB,....as most harddrives etc are quoted in GB (approx)...

HANG ON......I get you......

So then I assume that when the companies quote about speed and everyone else is talking about Mb (bits) then ????? So should I then reset the stats grid back to kb...(bits)????? :S

I contacted Virgin and they have no plans to extend to my area as yet. I asked a Virgin representative in town centre and he shook his head and told me Virgin media around Basingstoke is 'sporadic' and 'patchy'. :(

All line checks show I can get ADSL2+ which is true as that's what I have now. No FTTC or FTTP sadly.

Interestingly though, I put in a few surrounding postcodes and houses close to me can get FTTC. Samknows also says the exchange has LLU and FTTC in some areas. I'm not sure how likely BT are to extend this to where I live though, might give them a call.

@GentleGiant

Doesn't look like either. Has the Ethernet connection which the modem's plugged into, then 2 SAT connections and another marked "Return".

Do you want me to wave my Fibre willy again lol I love rubbing your face in it

No, sir :(

Just did a speed test on mine...at the fastest time of the day... :giggle:

@GentleGiant........I see what you mean "b" and "B"........that showed up as as a max of 916ish kB on my Bitmeter......I think I'll reset my stats grid......bugger :S

In my last house, the telephone cables had to repaired ata least twice a year, due to wind/tree damage.

I had this in 2008 and couldnt believe they would just change the line without sorting out the tree that was causing the problem, the cable ran right through the middle and was tangled in the branches the first time the wind blew.

I finally got the owner of the tree to trim it last Christmas, but as the tree was overhanging a public footpath, the council or BT should have dealt with it, and when needed, billed the owner.

This is a fairly new problem, I used to live in a remote cottage, and BT engineers used to come out every few years and trim back the trees on public land, so the cables werent damaged. this didnt stop the squirrels from chewing them though

So if the trees don't get you the Squirrels do

If they are greys....shoot the "incomers".....we are trying to protect our natural red species.... .....and I'm being serious!!!!!....B)

Was on Virgin Media in my old house and would usually get 1.2mb/s download. Now I'm 20mb Sky Unlimited package and I get a pitiful 300kb/s. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I knew it was bad because friends had told me but my goodness, it's awful.

Virgin Media don't have fibre optic at all round Basingstoke so I'll be on the phone to them, literally begging them to dig the road up outside.

Fastest Sky can I get is 20mb as well. :S

You really have to call Sky and plead for them to send a Broadband engineer out, may take a lot of patience but I'm sure you'll break 'em in the end.

Virgin Media at our house, but dont really understand why the "server" is 100 miles away in Lancaster ??????

It's called doing the job as cheap as possible .To quote an example ,I'm an ex telephone engineer from the old days .Not so long ago ,I spotted a house spike ,which had pulled out of the brickes and was held by being wrapped round the wire .Couln't get hold of BT faults ,but spotted an engineer working locally .He'd spotted it as well ,and TRIED to report it .Seems ,unless the line is faulty ,nothing would get done -no income in doing anything about it .

Possibly another problem woul be getting permission to cut the branches .

^ Not too shabby for a phone!

From Virgin - paying for a 10Mb service.

With our epic BT service we were down to 100kbs for a while, until we got the Virgin system connected, not a fan of ADSL really - good idea/technology, just a shame it's so varied in its performance.

Nothing wrong with mine.

The tree rats were grey, and I used to shoot as many as I could with my HW80; I even managed to get a couple without leaving my bed, as they used to scamper across a tree branch outside my bedroom window. The only problem with tree rats is that they have a very thick skull; I soon found that an air rifle wasnt powerful enough to kill with a head shot at anything other than point-blank range; it would just knock them out of the tree. You had to go for either the chest or neck if you were more than 10-15 metres away. I used to have a walnut tree, and the day the nuts ripened, the tree would be grey with tree rats fighting over them. The other problem with living in the country was fat wood pigeons sitting on the TV aerial and bending it out of alignment.

This is mine just using my iPhone 4s on giffgaff network.

Sorry but you were all waving the E-peens, it's a bit under par there as well, on newsgroups I can pull down data at around 110Mbs most the time, and upload is 10 Mbs

Ping is usually around 18 ms as well. I find speedtest always under reports it
