The full horror of BT broadband is upon me!

Featured Replies

Was on Virgin Media in my old house and would usually get 1.2mb/s download. Now I'm 20mb Sky Unlimited package and I get a pitiful 300kb/s. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I knew it was bad because friends had told me but my goodness, it's awful.

Virgin Media don't have fibre optic at all round Basingstoke so I'll be on the phone to them, literally begging them to dig the road up outside.

Fastest Sky can I get is 20mb as well. :S

That's the nature of ADSL. How far are you from the exchange?

Ouch, sadly that's what you get with ADSL :(

Have a look on samknows.com it will show you an approximate figure as to what you should be getting if your getting less than that. Phone em up :)

Why the topic title when you don't even mention BT?

Sky run over the BT network...

* sent on my 16Mbps fiber optic connection with 2 Mbps upload ;)

Your poor results will be due to the length of copper back to the exchange and then the dodgy old kit your ISP has installed. As you mention BT in your title I though I would post this.

:)

I'm also on a BT ADSL connection after moving from a 50mb Virgin line and I'm getting between 12 and 16mb most of the time.

In a few weeks my street will be upgraded to BT Infinity so I'll be back up to 40mb down / 10mb upload.

I'm on BT - fortunately 18-month contract ends in February - Virgin set up my street in the summer there, so I'll be hoofing over to them. I have connection problems all the time via the BT hub.

I'll be able to get TV (two rooms), internet and phone for less than I'm paying for internet and phone at the moment.

The house is brand new as is the development I'm in so I'm guessing that's part of the problem for BT. Virgin just don't know Basingstoke exists it seems....:(

And yes, Sky = BT Infrastructure. I thought people knew the link so didn't mention it.

I can't get BT infinity either so I'm stuck at 20mbps which I'm no where close to getting. Long journey this one folks!

Just another example of the gaping disparity between advertised speeds and those available to a majority of the UK. There is no point in telling me about 50mb Virgin Media or super speed BT Infinity products if you have no intention of installing them in my area for at least 2 years, if ever. IMHO There is more chance of winning the lottery than getting the maximum claimed broadband speed of any supplier.

Had a Talk Talk rep on the doorstep just the other night telling me they had their own kit in the exchange and could supply speeds of 24mb/s. After I told him this was not possible unless Talk Talk had laid some fibre in the last week and him checking my postcode and phone number to report back an available 4mb/s speed he changed his story and said he had stated "up to" 24mb/s. To which I replied I already get 6mb/s from Sky. Just goes to show you how much sales BS there is in the broadband market.

Oh how over the moon I was when we moved into our new house to find there was physically no BT line and only some old cable and wireless boxes that were connected up to virgin. Couple of days later all the kit turned up having saved a fortune on BT set-up costs and never looked back!

It's very rare we don't get our 10mb that we pay for (still on this as we are getting it dirt cheap and see no point in upgrading to a faster speed).

God I hate ADSL...

 @ "pitiful" 300kb/s

120kb/s - that's how I roll!

MB/s....is it true you can get this???..........I still have to deal with kB/s!!!........average speed over the past 4 months of 7.51kB/s download!!!..........usually see around 600 to 900kB/sec peaks......and I'm only 300m from the main exchange! Mind you the exchange is getting "upgraded" next spring.....

I used to be on sky with a bt line and got 300kb/s switched phone line to sky and now get 1.7mb/s. No hardware change just sky willing to give me highest rates my line can take while BT just gave excuses.

Sky run over the BT network...

My Sky LLU downloads at 1.4mb/s, sky on non LLU is rubbish though.

300kbs you lucky lucky b'stard, we dream of 300kbp, if we get 120kbs it's a good day.

We just got the news that our exchange is to be the first in Scotland to be upgraded to BT Infinity - Cable to cabinet (and the cabinet is about 100m from my house

Goodbye 0.4 mb hello 15mb (guaranteed minimum!!!!)

I really want FTTP..... <dribbles> but I don't want a crappy caped service from BT. I want something like Sky's LLU offering - no traffic shaping, no caps, just fast internet.

 @ "pitiful" 300kb/s

120kb/s - that's how I roll!

Do you want me to wave my Fibre willy again lol I love rubbing your face in it

I am with Sky (ADSL LLU from the Blandford Exchange). I get 4meg on my up to 20meg practically all the time, and I am around 1.5 miles from the exchange as the crow flies. However my actual cable run is much longer, so even if you are close to the exchange thats no guarantee of a fast connection. If you are on Sky Connect then thats a truly terrible service which at peak time practically stops.

Post your router stats here.

These are mine to give you an idea.

Add to that a connection to customer service centre somewhere in Asia ,where the level of English is not outstanding ,and with your accent ( mine is similr) no hope of being understood. So if nothing goes wron - all is well -otherwise problems and emails get ignored ,phone calls get nowhere ,an a cancellation gets ignored (as in my case) . Hope all goes well -just be advised of the down side of Virgin -something they don't want you to know .

BT are shocking and they throttle your connection as their network can't cope.

I'm with aaisp (google it)

I'm rural so no fibres here. You get what you pay for and not all isps are the same.

SO if you want your line the best it can be look at

I miss my old Virgin 10 meg connection. I definitely took it for granted. I've moved to a non cabled area and because we're a village on the border of 3 different boroughs, no one wants to commit to the expenditure of linking us up to civilisation.

I've sent email requests and ;

Virgin broadband currently have no plans to expand to your area.

BT infinity currently have no plans to roll out in your area.

Yorkshire Digital Region have frozen their roll out programme and you may as well knit yourself a cable connection.

So I'm stuck with Sky. Like dial up.

@ fabdavrav

I think you are getting confused between BITS and BYTES (b & B)

900kB = 7.2Mb

It doesnt help that some people and programs report in BYTES and others in BITS, or even worse, use both " I only get 500kB on my 5Mb connection" for example.

@ Reavenger

Does the new house have a BT iPlate or the older Master socket? If it is the older Master socket, an iPlate or simply taking the cover off and using the "Test" socket may give you better speeds.

Prior to getting an iPlate during a line replacement, I found I got 4.5Mb through the Master socket and 6.5Mb through the test socket.

Also, I assume you have unplugged any extensions and phones to make sure a fault has not occurred somewhere, and tried a new ADSL filter???? Some SKY boxes used to be prone to causing ADSL problems, and a phone can start to cause problems on the line while showing so problems during voice calls.
