Camshaft changed - burning oil smell

Featured Replies

Only just read this but glad you have it sorted Mark

Must say I've not experienced the same noise that I had back in the summer when we were discussing this the first time. They always sound more clattery this time of the year too!

I was about to say that sounds very similar to my own engine lol

Def, the amount of different noise in cold weather can be quite alarming. My cars been idling at 1000rpm a few times too

Excellent news, all good then

I still don't trust the car - give it a few thousand miles yet :giggle: I've also got an itch for some thing a bit quicker, but I am trying to hold off on that one for as long as possible. I know the history of this car too well now to throw it all away, if you know what I mean.

That noise on mine just kept returning for whatever reason. Maybe just the springs in some of the lifters were knackered or something? I don't really know how it all works, but the whole lot of stuff didn't look as worn as I was imagining it to be. Everything I had read was suggesting that when the 'bupping' noises begin, you were already in the later stages of wear.

Incidentally, I only discovered earlier today that if you press the sticky-out-bit on the under side of the lifter, oil squirts out of the hole on the side!!! I fear that shouldn't have brought me as much joy as it did at the time :)

Anyway, I'll post back how it's running after the run-in oil change. My plan after that is to have the gearbox oil changed, some new wheels (mine are really very tatty) and then leave it alone for as long as possible.

Happy days! :)

...and then leave it alone for as long as possible.

...and stop worrying about nothing!

Spot on B)

Had mine out tonight for a run and thought I'd do as moggy said, popped the bonnet etc sounds sweet as a nut :) altho didnt hear any difference between air con on and off lol

Tbf I think any diesel will knock depending on the angle you hear it from etc cause the pitch and tone change constantly when you walk around the engine

Yeah, it does seem to depend on the angle you listen from :giggle: I thought that was just because I was listening in an enclosed space (car port) so sound was bouncing around everywhere.

Doesn't sound very different with AC on, though it scared me when it kicked in as my head was tucked in the engine bay.

I did hear a faint "bupping" sound return yesterday.... maybe normal.... as above, it was only audible at certain angles - nothing like when it happened before. That was loud.

Easy to simulate the PD130 engine note. Fill a sack with spanners, and kick it across the garage floor  Now the engine in my Moggy Traveller, that sounds like a well oiled sewing machine, and sticks out about the same power

Haha  shame it sounds so rubbish.

A teacher at my high school had a Traveller. I think. Wooden framed behind, right? Always thought it looked dead cool

Yup, wooden bum, just fast enough to avoid termites.

That is a treat. Sweet memories of playing with Moggies. Never did the welding but could do anything on the A series engine. 1098 engine, stage 2 head with 1 3/4 SU off a Marina 1.8, Sprite Mk1 straight through exhaust, 948cc back axle. Made the most glorious noises down the hills in Torquay, beat virtually anything off the lights but wouldn't do above 70mph. Rotten wood at the back before they started failing that on the MOT. Wonderful times when playing with cars was so easy.
