Auto Wipers

Featured Replies

I'm sure this isn't the first time this has been raised. The auto-sensor wipers on my Octavia II drive me crazy, they are next-to-useless. I reset them constantly, also adjust the sensitivity switch but they still work poorly, running fast when there is hardly any rain to wipe but even worse, not wiping at all when I need them.

Is there any way to have them changed to a more relable, human-controlled intermittent wipe, as on my wife's Fabia?

You have my sympathies!!!

I don't have anything like this on my current Octy II (54 Reg almost 100k on the clock) - I even had my A/C removed when the compressor failed - couldn't justify spending £many100's to fix something which is only used for a few days a year here in GB - another story!

I'm quite capable of switching on the wipers myself when necessary.

These so called "must-haves" are a pain in the backside!

Keep it simple Skoda!!!

A common complaint, although there are also a lot of happy 'auto wiper' users too!

The simple fact is it's impossible to please everyone. My wife will sit there will her wipers on full when it stopped raining 5 minutes earlier so whilst you may think they are on too fast others may find them just right.

The best thing to do is buy a car without them, something that is and will become increasingly more difficult as these and auto lights are fast becoming standard fit on a lot of new cars.

I wish I could replace my auto wipers for the standard intermittent setting but alas it’s not possible.

Mine are fine, will see soon to what i have changed the sensibility.

a dirty/smudgy windscreen, specifically where the rain sensor (behind the rear view mirror) is, will cause such unfavourable results.

touchwood, mine has been quite good. though i usually leave it on 'off' for most of the time, and manually kick it into 'auto' mode when required.

Rain in Australia? I though the wipers themselves would be optional let alone the auto function :giggle:

I've got to admit that once I'd played with sensitivity and got it in just the right position I think they are great.

I leave them on "auto" all the time and they really don't go when they shouldn't and keep things nice and clear when it's actually raining.

Have to say, of all the "extras" you get with Elegance trim, the one I would happily ditch is auto wipers. Like the OP, unless I am going 50 mph or over (when they seem to be fine) I am forever reverting to manual intervention. I would really prefer the manual sort where you can set the wipe interval.

Is this just a Skoda thing? Are they more effective on other brands?

u obviously don't read the news enough!

the amount of rain we've had here this past yr, n still pouring outside as i type, is not funny now :(

glad the car has a rear window wiper too ;)

Get some rainx glass cleaner - £3 from Asda at the moment.

Wash the windscreen first and dry it, then clean with rain x and a microfibre cloth.

Works wonders, the auto wipers behave much more sensibly and also rainx works a treat on all the exterior glass and mirrors.

If they do seem to go a bit haywire just switch them to off and back to auto and it usually sorts itself out.

I've read on one of the many 'auto wipers' threads that Rainx makes the problem worse in that the rain behaves differently on the glass and confuses the sensor even more!?

Could happily do without them, just applied some nanolex glass sealant recently and hasnt made it any better and also certainly not any worse in terms of confusing the sensor.

Cant you switch it of via VCDS?

No, apparently not, it would be great if you could though so that the auto position changes to intermittent and the sensitivity rocker switch then performs the role of adjusting the frequency of the intermittent wipes...

Yes you can, you have an option to inactivate rain sensor

09-central electrics

choose ECU number 2

Byte-1

bite-5 (I think)

But do you get the standard intermittent setting instead? If not then there is no point deactivating the sensor...

I find it is better after a good clean with rainx.

If they are annoying people that much, £3 is worth a try isn't it?

That I can´t say, just a matter of trying it out.

My 3 quid worth was the Turtle Rain Repelant

Here´s a small video. The rain drops will only work after a certain speed

On another note, for those who intend to change the rear wiper blade, just use the rubber part from this make.

As someone not yet familiar with the odd way of changing settings, I am quite excited to hear the results of a possible way to disable the auto wipers, so please publish the procedure if you do manage to get them to work in a traditional intermittent mode. Whatever setting I choose, they are always more active than I would like. I have used Rain X, and an even better product now discontinued, called Rain Guard, which came in a singular pink bottle. The effectiveness of the water repellant treatments varies from one brand of car to the next. It worked brilliantly on my Rover 218, not bad on my MX5, fairly well on my Clio and least well on the Octavia.

My Clio also has auto rain sensing wipers, and the sensitivity control (= the variable intermittent adjustment) seems to cause no change at all in the behaviour of the wipers. Again, it is more sensitive than I would choose.

Even though I use a windscreen sealant there's still times when I have the need to use my wipers on what should be intermittent but is auto and they drive me mental, so much so that I usually revert to using the manually operated single sweep so please, please, please if anyone tries alberg's suggestion do post up the results

I use the Carlack kit and it is the best I have ever used although I have just got some Permanon Platinum which is an all over nano system which I'll be trying out as soon as I get chance and who knows, that may prove to be better still

Carlack is probably the best product, hard to find around here and cost 4 times more.

The site I've linked to caters for orders outside the UK. I'm not sure what freight charges, import costs etc you may have to pay but perhaps, if there's a few of you that want things, you could all club together to spread the cost.

My Yetis wipers do exactly the same ,which is driving me mad as well.

Is it worth mentioning to my dealer on its first service ?,or will I get,"They all do that sir".

Any suggestions very gratefully received!

I had them on my previous but one Octy and never spec'd them again as the standard intermittent is by far more superior than the "mind of their own" auto setup. If there's one thing Skoda should ditch....oh hang on, there's two, the other is the MDI.

Yeah, I find them generally to be a little over sensitive, but to be fair, you can switch them to 'off' and flick the manual down once in a while or just click up two to have them on normally. It's not like you can't switch it off completely and one is stuck with it.

I too would be VERY interested to see if anyone gets any joy with that VCDS setting as to whether you get old fashioned manual intermittant control or if it stops that notch working completely...
