I leave my switch on L and only turn on the heating if required, The mirrors are set from the factory to infinate (Adaptable with VCDS) So as long as the ignition is on the mirrors will heat regardless of time of year/Outside temp!

As above. Iv set mine to 20mins but still in the habit of leaving them on L.

Mirrors will only heat up with the rear heater switched on, and the mirrors set to the heating option.

No they don't!

Mirrors and rear screen work independently!emoticon-0105-wink.gif

That's incorrect - the rear screen heater does not need to be on. The mirrors will heat at all times unless in the L or R position - or changed via VCDS as mentioned above.

Too fast for me Mike!!

lol

You can alter the time they are on for with Vag com.

Set mine to 10mins

TBH 5 minutes is long enough, And 10 mins for the rear screen!

I stand corrected :giggle: Oh well almost 3 years of leaving them in the heated position and they haven't burnt out.

If that is the case then you are SO lucky, I read about this on a USA B5 forum, but unfortunately a bit too late to save my mirrors, so I had to replace both mirrors and learn to leave the switch on LHS, find my wife's Polo gets left "ON" sometimes, but luckily I've, so far, caught it quickly enough and it only ever happens in really cold periods, so that sort of saves the mirrors from burning out their heat tapes.

sorry I'm confused, how do I switch them off and on? And is there an indication?

Is there a fuse number associated with them too?

thanks

Off = line on knob to either L or R position/letter

On = line on knob to middle heater position/picture

They wont work with the ignition off either

My 2004 vRS's mirrors were left on most of the six years I owned it and they were fine after that time. I've had the 2007vRS for 2.5 years and no problems there either...

Thanks, so there is no indication on the dash if they are on etc either?

Cheers

Right from my experience

Off - Line on knob any where

On - You have to physically pull the knob towards the rear of the door this actuates the heater elements.

This is how mine work

I even checked it during the cold mornings

I left the line in the middle started the car and began defrosting the glass the wing mirrors stayed frosted, I opened the door pulled the knob towards the rear of the door and They started to defrost!

There is even an arrow on mine indicating that the knob needs to be moved to start the heating.

Really? Sounds like you have a different setup to me? Ive seen 2 types that exist, one like mine and the other has a l/r and thats it.

Not had my vRS long but I'm fairly sure they are on when the line on the knob is on the bit that looks like a square.

I assumed they only came on when rear window heater is on but I haven't checked this so I may be wrong.

I leave mine on the heating position but I will stop doing that now I've read this. Although it goes against everything my OCD tell me lol.

I agree, I leave mine in the heated position, I've only had the car for a few weeks though and I've not driven it much. Moving it to the L or R position looks untidy, I'm going to do it anyway though.

I've just checked the manual and heated mirrors operate in the mk 1 vrs when the line points to the heater position and the engine is running.

Thanks, so there is no indication on the dash if they are on etc either?

No - because they're meant to be left on all the time. My BMW 525 was the same.

I've left mine in the on position for the duration of my ownership and haven't had any problems. My brother has a fabia as well and his have been left on since 2004 and never had any problems either!

4 years of having mine on permanent heat and they still work perfectly fine.

Can you feel them if they are working?

Cheers

Yes they are hot to the touch

In winter mornings you can see steam rising from them!

The cars has 3 settings does it not L Heated R

Leave it in the middle! They only come on when the rear window heated element is activated
