i've seen a few A1's on the road. if it has a skoda badge and a skoda fabia front grille /headlights, and keeping everything else eaxactly the same, would they still buy it, probably not.

  • I sort of agree with you, but my mates wife has an A1 as a company car and the interior quality is just in a totally different class to the Fabia. Its just way better inside.

  • No, it's a badge thing. Put the Skoda badge on the A1 and the owners wouldn't buy it, period. Most couldn't give a flying feck if the plastics 'feel' better or if it has part leather trim on the seat

  • I kind of like the anti Skoda snobbery and in some ways I am an inverse snob. I have a pretty good job and live in a comfortable area and get a perverse buzz out of the reactions of Premium car owning

Correct, it's all about the badge. "I want an Audi but can't afford a proper one". A bit like the BMW 1 series!

Mind you, the A3 owners will be loving it because they won't get laughed at for buying the "cheapest" Audi any more :giggle:

I have a VRS and my wife has a Audi a1 1.6TDI sport.

Having driven both, I would have to say;

The Audi drives like a tank.....slow and lathargic..... and the visability for the drivers is poor due to the rake of the roof and pillars etc. The boot is pitifully small and the battery is in the boot! there

is no spare tyre....(no room!!) and to cap it all It cost nearly 4K more......... When we went to buy the A1 we where made to feel that we should be grateful for being allowed to purchase one of their cars!!!

When we went to purchase the VRS we where made to feel that our custom was appriecated. Nuff said. Ron

Dealer Servicing costs on an Audi are considerably dearer than skoda.

Unobtanium costs lots to maintain.

No, opposite in fact. £250 pays for the first 5-years servicing with the A1. You could pay the same for a single major Fabia service.

Remember readin an interview with an Audi boss who stated that a main selling point for the A1 was that people would get a buzz out of buying the car from the same showroom as an A8. I was almost seduced into an A4 in 2005 by the ambience of the showroom, it really does work. In the cold light of day I just dont get the Audi thing at all and I am the kind of person that bought a Mini.

A1 didnt even enter the equation as I could see the hire car car section in Edinburgh airport rammed full of them, pretty obvious sign of a manufacturer trying to shift volume for other reasons - eg not selling or in this case trying to drop average CO2.

Funny how nowt changes Real Minis not German crap. Mini 850cc Mini 1000cc Mini 998cc Cooper. Then 970cc 1071cc, +1275cc Cooper S A lot of these cars were hybridized that much that you never knew with a de badged mini what the hell it was in front of you. But when you come to value it different matter.if buying a badge floats your boat do it. At the end of the day VRS A1 both do the same job its called choice thats why people buy Bosch washing machines over say zanusi or whatever, they all break down its just that people have this idea German is best, well im sorry but this no longer applies as has allready been posted look at there positions in reliability stakes. Hyundai/Kia +Skoda are better.

"Now, how many folk out there realise that the Cooper and the One share the EXACT SAME ENGINE?"

When the Mini came out in 2001, they both had a 1.6 engine. Since 2008 the One has had a 1.4, the Cooper a 1.6.

Il generalise this subject buy just saying if i had a choice between say a Octavia and A3 (not fond of then a1s look hence a differenct comparison)

If my wallet could afford my choice of spec A3 all day long. But if i had a choice of entry level A3 or a nicely specd octaiva id go for then octavia.

Lets face it if you won the lotto would you really contiue with skoda when you can have any choice brand Audi bentley mercedes etc etc.

What i dispise more then anything is a certain type of badge snob. For example ones that can afford top spec audis etc fair do's if can and chances are you only use hinez beans bose tvs etc etc.

But its those who will do the upmost to get a bare bones Audi/merc etc then brag about having the said car. If you giving up spec which could make the car better more comfertable/pratical etc just to have a badge for your image i think it speaks alot about yourself

i swapped a polo GTI for a A1 they great cars i cant say it cost anymore then a decent spec Polo Ibiza id even say in some respects its better value overall :)

its just a shame you cant buy one with the 1.4 COD yet

Do you mean one of these?

With the poor service and response from VAG in sorting out peoples problems with Twin Chargers,

it will be interesting to see if they can deal with faulty Deacitivation Cylinder engines in Polos or A1's.

Time will tell if they can get it right from the launch, or customers have to be their sort and long term testers again.

There is a very nice 3 Door A1 185ps Twin Charger advertised just now.

Lovely Interior, but over £27,000

Sorry but you'd have to be a massive muppet to spend £26k ish on an Audi A1    Why not just get a Fabia, Polo, Seat, etc.

For that kind of money I'd be looking at a seriously nice (actual presige model ) like a Jag XKR or something ? It just doesn't deserve that kind of price tag.

Oh well you pays yer money you takes your choice.

I'd have thought the depreciation was shocking though (if not it should be)
