erm not really just its got 89k on the clock sure its the original clutch and after a spirited drive to work in the mornings you can smell clutch its not slipping yet

Is it the clutch or the brakes? Both smell the same!

i work at a well known Clutch Autocetre and in my experience Solid flywheel Cons can be problematic on performace cars. I would not have 1. We all drive different tho. im on the fence with the converts. I hate DMFs as well.. Stupid idea!

Why? Interested to see your reasons, not starting a web-fight!

no no, i dont to keyboard warrior! lol

I have seen a few come in that become noisy. they can become worped from heat and get small cracks and high spots. they make the car judder on idol as well as alot of clutch judder. the prob with convert flywhels is 90% of them you cannot re grind as you can a normal solid fly wheel. you end up back to square 1 and will end up putting a DMF back in.

I have never done the VR/G60 convert but i have seen loads of people do it so it cant be all that bad. These are oe pars remember so if the FW becomes warped it can be re-ground.

Keep the dmf it's there to reduce vibrations from damaging engine components eg when u convert a transit some of them after so long snap the crankshaft as ur ment to fit a pully to the crankshaft after conversion to do the job of the dmf

My link

Have a look there

Keyboard warriors are tools. :D

As a diesel driver, I'm no stranger to noise. Since I've had the SMF, the car feels much happier to move. The gearshift action also feels more substantial and a lot less notchy, though that could be thanks to fresh gearbox oil too.

Only downside is that while accelerating there is a clear addition of vibration at around 2,000rpm, which I'm hoping will STFU once the clutch is bedded in nicely.

More than anything, I'm looking forward to having more torque without my gearbox/clutch going bang.

is the clutch new?? should take no longer than 200 miles for it to bed in mate.

And Warriors get on my breasts.. irritants!

Brand spankers. I do a fair amount of traffic-based clutch jiggerypokery too, so the bed-in time is always fun! Only done 30 miles on it currently!

Never will forget damn near melting the clutch in my old Civic. Going from a slipping, decked clutch to this is a revelation.

so you dont worrk on many performance cars then???

99% of high performance cars use solid flywheels ;-) there not problematic thats just there design simples

why is a dmf a stupid idea?? bloody good idea imo for the job it was intended to do

I have had the g60 flywheel,vr6 clutch in my vrs for 3 years now with no problems, only thing you get is some chatter at idle but it doesn't bother me,also I drive a taxi at the weekend a mondeo diesel, which has been running a solid flywheel for 150,000 miles with no issues, hasn't snapped the crankshaft yet, done 225,000 miles and still going strong.

Hi all.

I'm thinking of doing a solid flywheel conversion. I've seen a Valeo one on euro car parts quite cheap.

What does everyone think of it?

Thanks

Chris

Hi just got a price from who I use if its a valeo 826317 over the counter £236.80 inc vat my mate as a cash account £200.36 inc vat so makes euro a bit dear !! have a ring round!!

Valeo clutch kit seems fine on mine, ain't been on that long though, I got the FW from TPS so genuine VW part.

I'm told Valeo are OEM for BMW amongst others so should be ok for us. (I hope lol)

just had one fitted is supposed to be a borg and beck £311.00 inc vat, runs great now its like driving a different car

i work for renault trucks and valeo are oem clutches for most of our stuff unless you get to the big stuff so the quality should be fine

not saying they dont. They are designed to work with a solid flywheel not a converted flywheel. There are also alot of High performance cars with DMF`s now as well. 350z`s for 1 and some Porkas too. Personally i dont like DMFs as there unreliable and very expensive. I also understand the concept, i think its stupid that some makes of cars that have them they last no longer than 40000 miles before they start to rattle. there are only 3 main companies that make them i find it a little gut wrenching that they fail so quicky. Solid flywheels all the way, but on cars that are designed for a dampning DMF, in my experience have been poo.

i would not touch anything but, LUK, sachs, Valeo

just going from what i have seen :);)

to be fair the luk and sachs kits you fit are prob the oem like for like cheaper end of the market units right???

so in no way can you say stay away from them as there top end kits are some of the best around lol

dmf have been used on cars to make it a nicer smoother drive less rattle etc etc

in your experience have you seen or been in heavily modded cars running solid conversion due to huge power and torque ??? if you have why was it poo??/

i have already said my reasonings. im not sure what else you want me to say. :smirk: feeling slightly quized and well.. i have to do this all day at work so i really cannot be arsed to do it now! !! lol I was simply voicing my opinion of a question asked.

Right simple question I got a price today of just under £500.00 for the conversion supplied fitted with warranted. Tried to chip the guy down but he was sticking to his guns. So is that a good price???????????????????????

He did say I could get my own parts but he could not warranty the job then? So if I went down that line and took my chances what is the best one any straight forward links would also be appreciated.

Thanks

You can source the parts for under £200 (search for Bodges thread on this) so it sounds like he's trying to charge about 6 hours labour!

For that money you could almost get a new clutch and a DMF fitted instead of the SMF conversion

Thanks and thinking about it I think it was a new clutch whats the DMF bit? see if that jogs my memory!!
