2.0 PD tdi loss of power

Featured Replies

I had a loss of power episode today going to work, it happened 4 times in quick succession,if I dropped a gear the car picked up again, the journey was only 6 miles and on the way home nothing happened? no warnings on the dash came up either? any ideas what the problem is please? hope its not the Turbo? only 38k miles on the clock.

cheers Dave

unfortunately it is sounding like the variable vane part of the turbo seizing up. had 3 at work recently with the same problem and 1 over boosting when scanned. switchin off n on again resets ecu so can get going again. Sorry for the bad news Dave

forgot to say this is a v common problem on the golfs and audi a3 as well as all use same turbo engines regardless of code

Cheers, whats the likely outcome/cost? i`ll try and get it scanned tommorow

I heard turbo trouble is more common on the 140pd is it?

Reading all the threads on here it does seem to have problems with turbos.

I've had 2 replacement turbos but each one lasted 130,000kms approx. The one that's in now is on nearly 200,000kms, I think they need to be "driven" regularly and proper spec oil on schedule is crucial.

Just another point, the turbo that seems to be lasting me the longest is a Turbo Technics exchange unit. They tell me that they slightly modify the vanes so they don't clog up as easily. I think if you have to replace a turbo out of warranty, these people are a no brainer.

Just had a replacement turbo on my PD170 also at 38,000 miles :o

Luckily it was under a partial warranty (£1000 max claim limit), plus a £400 contribution from Skoda UK.

This was main dealer though so more expensive then a local turbo specialist.

If Skoda were prepared to contribute to mine (out of manufacturers warranty) then I'd be popping into your local dealer to ask for help at the same time as asking around locally for a quote...

Had the car scanned today and its the Particle filter that`s causing the sudden loss of power, good its not the Turbo but now I have to get on the motorway this weekend when its quiet and give the car a good run to burn off the blockage, Iv been advised not use cheap Morrisons diesel and use Shell instead as the cheap fuel just adds to the problem.

I dunno, if it was the turbo, you'd expect the car to have gone into limp mode and not recovered until after you turned the ignition off and back on.

I'd actually suggest you're more likely to find an issue with the MAF sensor.

Worth looking at the air and fuel filters too just to make sure they've been changed in the last few miles.

20k miles air, 60k miles fuel IMHO although the service interval is higher.

If i Remember correctly there is an additive avaliable from motor factors like ces that goes in the tank to lower burn off temps of diesel soot / emissions again used it at work n seemed to help. but its around £25 for a tiny bottle of the stuff

Like I say its the Particle filter, saw the readout myself as the mechanic sat beside me as I drove and the fault code came up, the MAF sensor was mentioned but a fault code didnt come up for it, what bothers me is that a fault code came up for the Particle filter but the symbol on the dash goes out as normal when the car is started?? Mech said this can happen though???

You should be worried mate its a joke, people are getting blamed for their driving styles as an excuse for these faults.

I should be worried? Thanks that's really assuring!

38k is quite a lot for one of these probs to occur. i work at perrys car sales in Donisthorpe fixing what ever comes through the door and we've had 08 plate vrs, golfs n a3 all with the same problem come through the door and 9 out of 10 need turbo replacement. majority of them at 40 - 50k on the clocks. normally its because the cars in question don't get opend up enough (short runs low revs all the time) that the vnt (Variable vane mechanism) gets jammed and seize up. its all down to the exhaust / turbo temperature not getting hot enough and the main egr (exhaust gas recirulation) feed pipe bolts on just above the turbo itself chuckin all its unburt sludge (oil + soot and fuel) staright back into the turbo to be reused.

We use AR Turbo, Garret approved repaires for ours and they charge £195+ for a VNT Rebuild which is cheap or £530+ for a brand new unit both on a 2 day ish turn round after they collected via courier your old unit

It's just strange as I know so many a3 and vrs owners with over 100k miles and no turbo trouble

I did the re gen an hour ago, followed the mechs instructions...

A trip up the motorway 20 mins with revs in the 2000/2500 range which is about 50 mph in 4th, then 20 back to where I started, its seems to have worked, no loss of power when accelerating etc so i`ll see how it goes, Im bloody annoyed that Iv had to do this and I bet this isnt the last time either, should have kept my 51 plate Audi 1.9TDi, what a car, none of this particle filter bull****.

rant over....for now

That filter is a pain and I'll be removing mine down the road id say. I changed my faulty exhaust pressure sensor and got it adapted so touch would no more problems.

It's been a problem ever since VNT turbos appeared. I've never had one fail (cosses fingers), but then my car rarely does short runs, and gets a good booting once in a while.

What symptoms do you get when the exhaust pressure sensor plays up?

reason I ask is my power loss has returned, the turbo has been ruled out, the particle filter has been re generated, so im looking for what the next fault could be and I cant get the car looked at until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest

I have been using Millers additive (Cetane booster)in both my cars (2.0ltr x 140 bhp Octy and 2.5 d BMW) a bit pricey to buy but works out cheaper than buying V power.

100ml per tank full. Bought it in 5ltr container

Did anyone get to the bottom of this? I am having brief loss of power, like the turbo has gone... new turbo fitted, no DPF any ideas?

Get a scan done - search for the VAGCOM or VCDS members map, there should be someone close to you who can help.
