what Pipe size, Mufflerectomy

Featured Replies

registered powerflow dealer quoted me £100 for a 2 1/4 inch pipe to replace my silencer and backbox, also with a tip of my choice welded on.

1. does that price seem reasonable? (i thought so)

2. will i get a nicer sound with it than standard

3. praying for the owl, any chance it will come through with a cat still on.

4. will it affect a remap if i had the remap first?

cheers, sam.

My mate put his cat back on and hes lost the 'owl' sound.imo ud be better putting the exhaust on first then getting a map to suit it as a generic map is for a standard exhaust..

Go for 2.5", same as Miltek

Less likely for owl sound with cat really.

2.5" is best but without decat its unlikely you will get the owl.

£80 I paid

IIRC its just back box to cat to downpipe no silencer so not sure what you mean but getting rid of that?

Just to balance things up, I have a 2.25" pipe where the backbox used to be, with the cat still in place and it makes the owl noise bloody loudly if you know how to make it. You just have to gently spool some boost up in a higher gear then lift of the throttle ;)

would like to see a video after :)... and £60 sounds nice, my local powerflow gave me a price of like £180, which i thought was crazy so im going a bit further out and got quoted £100, Are my area prices so high as im in London?

Perhaps, redhill quoted £100, I don't really have that cash to splash for something purely cosmetic :( even though it sounds awesome.

my nearest longlife branch wanted £130 i dont know why theres such a difference in price. i will get a vid after its run in bit and had abit of suet through it, its going in friday i cant wait now.

Ive been looking at this doing and every local exhaust garage quoted over £100. Powerflow one even said it would cos me same if i had a full section made with a new tip as just having the silencer cut out and replaced because the time is the same.

Go figure to me it sounds like less work.

I went into my local powerflow dealer in yeovil, they wouldnt doit! Would be too loud and went to say hed done it before, wouldnt listen to a word i said, typical ass i think

yea i went into a local exhuast place and the guy just took me for a mug, didnt end well, wont be going back there ;) lol...

I know a lot of questions have been asked before regarding these, but if I was go get a Mufflerectormy and remove the cat at the same time will it cause any issues's with the turbo with me currently running and Awesome Gti map?

Youd need to get a map to suit the decat

You dont need the map after a decat you would just benefit having a custom map done after certain mods to get the most from them really. But you will have no issues running a decat after a remap mate. I might go for a full turbo back system in time but with a sports cat then straight through from the sports cat.

If your already running a map that is for a car with a cat on, then decat it, do you not risk the turbo overspooling thus damaging it itself?

well theres that risk if you have your car mapped with a decat still on a standard turbo. if your talking generic maps i dont think theres much difference either way with the cats, the overspooling will come down to if your map has basically turned your boost up to high thus creating the main problems. thats why its best to go the main reputable companies.

Jabbasport posted some bits ages and ages ago about detecting overspooling by wacking a decat on a mapped (for a cat) car. I`m by no means an expert but i`m going on what the more reputable tuning companies have said in the past. I`d just hate to see people damaging their turbos for the sake of a quick map tweak.

When I got my custom turbo back exhaust I only paid £250 so £180 for a mufflerectomy seems a tad extreme.

This is my thought's aswell from what I have read before hand on the site. Ideally I'd love to have a full Piper System but with all the other bit's I want doing on the car atm (front end re-spray, new wheels and tyres) it's off the cards even with only paying trade price for it.

I was going to just gut the CAT internal's on my current downpipe, and get a straight through pipe made up on the cheap anybody have any experience on how is best to gut the CAT?

Smash it with a bar!

Who said mufflerectomy's lose power?..... Just under a 6bhp gain, not to mention the weight saving.
