Featured Replies

Hi this is first post hope i have put this in right place. Was just wondering if this model has a cam belt or is on a chain.

Many thanks

Darren

Hi darren - depends on engine .,from Haynes ( version 4376).1.4 OHV (CODES AZE/AZF +AME/AQW/ATZ) have a Timing Chain . The 1.4DOHC has two cambelts . Mind you ,think the DOHC has "16V" on the bootlid .

If in doubt , do a search on here for accessory codes and look to see where the list is pasted . Seem to remember on mine( 04 Hatch with Diesel ,the list in the boot area, under the carpet . ( yep ,the old brain hasn't let me down - that's where Haynes says it is .

The list of codes is pretty usefull( as is the conversion chart) .

If its a MPI then its chain driven 8valve and in theory should last the life of the engine but they caan get a bit noisy with high mileage but seem to be bulletproof engine code will be on a sticker under carpet back left side boot..

thank you very much for your help

Yep basically as above. There's no tensioner on the chain so when it stretches, it gets noisy and rattles. When the rattling gets annoying, or causes running issues, is when you need to replace it. I believe there's few or no reported issues of chains slipping or snapping.
