Does the Greenline have longer gearing?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, hoping someone can answer this one for me....

Does the Greenline spec give the car higher/longer gearing like the Bluemotion spec Golfs? Ie if you had an Elegance and a Greelline both with the 1.6tdi engine and five speed box - would they both sit at the same revs at 70mph or would the Greenline sit slightly lower? Thanks in advance. :-)

No mention of it in the brochure:

1) 1.6 TDI CR 105PS DPF

2) Energy Recovery

3) Aerodynamics

4) Low Profile Tyres

5) Stop/Start System

6) Gear Recommendations

Hmmmm, that was my conclusion. Thanks.

IIIC the evo/ skoda bonneville car got a green line box because the longer gearing gave them a higher top speed.

So I guess the answer to you question would be "yes".

+ read that too

The greenline versions of the Fabia and Superb both have longer gearing, so I see no reason why the Octavia would be any different. The Fabia and Superb brochures also do not mention the longer gearing.

With the Fabia the difference in gearing is very noticeable, you cannot use 4th at 30mph for example and 5th is very much the reserve of 50mph plus.

Ah damn, now I'm even more unsure than when I asked the question! Lol

Did this mystery ever get solved..?

Did this mystery ever get solved..?

I guess not ...

At 70mph my Elegance Estate is at a tad over 2000rpm

According to the brochure, the Greenline has a higher top speed and is quicker to 60mph - lower, different tyres - different gearing too?

Right... I'm heading out in the Greenline...

70 on the clock looks like 2150 revs or so. Not that different it would appear

I have the Leon Ecomotive (SEAT's version of the BlueMotion) 70mph on the clock is 1900RPM. This is the 1.6TDI, in 5th.

The quicker 0-60 for the Greenline is confusing, as longer gearing should slow acceleration slightly, so unless Skoda are different, and have only made certain gears longer, as opposed to all of them (like the SEAT and VW versions).

We might have to go to GPS to be sure a my Octy II speedo is a lot more accurate than the Octy I one and that difference would easily account for 2-300 rpm difference

The German skoda site has gear ratios under technical data.

my greenline octy 1950 rpm @70mph if that helps, its ok @ 30mph in 4th and does not like 5th until 40- 45mph

Yes to answer the question

All Greenline/Bluemotion/Ecomotion have the 5ºth gear ratio diferent, even less rpm when at 60mph

The German skoda site has gear ratios under technical data.

My knowledge of German is *very* limited, but from what I can see the gear ratios are the same, as is the final-drive ratio. Only difference in that section of the spec is the tyres - 205/55R16 (Elegance) vs. 196/65R15 (GreenTec). I calculate the radius of the tyres to therefore be less than 0.2 inches different - probably less than the difference caused by new vs. worn tyres or incorrect pressures.

We can probably conclude that speed, driving conditions, driving style, and weather have a grater impact on economy and thus cost per mile.

Longer gearing doesn't always mean slower acceleration. it might mean you get off the line slower but would probably mean you save a gear change or just get away with changing gear later.

Indeed, I've just installed much taller ratios across the board in my work car. It now means 2 gear changes to 100km/h instead of 3. The result on such a slow car is getting up to speed with about 50m less road. I haven't timed the difference yet.

Though that's a Greenline II, isn't it? My Greenline I is comfortably over 2k at 70 on the clock and far more at 70 on the GPS and OBDII (the speedo is fast relative to the OBDII read out)

I'm going to say they would want the rolling radius to remain the same so as not to have to recalibrate speedo's etc.

The key difference is the tyre width - 205 vs 195 - narrower tyres give less rolling resistance, therefore better fuel consumption

I've got two sets of wheels for my GL, the stock alloys with Michelin ecomentalist tyres (currently on) and a set of 17" VRS wheels with a selection of rubber (currently off) and I've not noticed any difference in consumption between the two.

The VRS wheels are definitely prettier though :-)

Real world, I don't think you would notice a difference tbh! But they would probably make enough of a difference in the CO2 and economy tests to give some extra MPGez and a few grams less CO2s.

OK, so here's the revs at an indicated 70:

and here's the revs at a true 70:

Yes Gyp Greenline 2 , not checked it against sat nav yet , is the greenline 2 speedo acurate I have no idea? and what a big jump from 1st to 2nd gear
