Wanted a Skoda, bought one, lots of arguing about cam belts, now back to the car...

Featured Replies

Nice car and the best trim to go with, it having the alcantara, I wouldn't buy an L&K with the grey leather.

All the 7 speed DSG boxes fitted in Skoda cars are the dry clutch version, there is a higher torque wet clutch version but that is only in higher spec VW at the moment.

Surprising that the insurance for the L&K is cheaper than the Elegance as it is a group higher due to the higher equipment as standard like the xenon headlights.

Nice car indeed, I'm sure you will enjoy it a lot and a full review please, I think my next car will be a 1.8 TSI DSG L&K Octavia as I'm wondering about the wiseness of having a diesel with my 8,000 miles a year average, good for towing though.

Nice car...and nice use of the disabled bays too at the dealership.

Yeah it's a little odd that they choose to use the disabled bays like that. The two times I've been there I've not seen one car in those bays with a badge on.

I'll have lots to say about it no doubt, I was also surprised about the insurance being cheaper since I changed absolutely nothing else on the policy. I'm not going to complain about it though :) I'm just pleased that it wasn't too much more than I'm used to paying.

Just two more drives to work in the Focus and then it's goodbye.

Just had a closer look at the photos, you have the optional front parking sensors, I hate you already!!!!!!!! lol :giggle:

Hehe yep :D. I THINK the only options added were the front sensors, tyre pressure monitor, spare wheel, steering wheel with phone options, and the BT connection. The only thing that I am not 100% on is if it got heated rear seats as I didn't realise the controls for that were in the back until I'd bought it come home and so I didn't notice if it had it. The L&K spec is really nice as standard though.

On the configurator one of the options is "Independent heating and telescopic front headlight washers and "MAXI DOT"". Not quite sure what that is for at a cost of £1,015! The L&K has headlight washers and Maxidot as standard :wonder:

I know im a bit late to the party on what i say below, but anyway... I will say congratulations on a beautiful new car. Im only an Octy owner since January and I love my mk I TDI. You should enjoy many many thousands of very happy, comfortable driving.

Now, in relation to the topic under discussion on page one of this topic:

Chain drive engine doesnt mean no maintenance, just a bit less. Keep it checked and make sure the tensioning kit gets done on services (think its every 40 or 60k), or you end up like my poor old Cordoba, which entered a coma just before christmas because said tensioning kit had not been done. the drive chain slipped, broke a cog's tooth, and knocked the timing off enough to prevent the engine from even starting.. given that a repair meant stripping the whole or engine, or a new one, i said good bye, and came to Skoda for a deezal.

Pleasantly, i have heard that the mechanic i sold it to has carried out a heart and lung transplant, and the old girl is going again, albeit with a new engine. however, DO NOT let this happen like i did, made xmas extra expensive this year!

I meant to say many many thousands of very happy comfortable driving miles..

again, beautiful car :-)

Well yesterday was the big day!

After handing my Focus keys over, Linda at Allams popped out to the car to move it and record the correct mileage, when she came back in she said that the technicians think we traded in at just the right time as the car sounds like the big end is gone and that it'll probably need a new engine. I suspected as much so the £400 I got for it seems like it wasn't too bad!

Anyway, the new car is lovely. Spent yesterday over at my in laws and then my parents to show it to them so didn't have too much time to play with everything though my Desire HD is now all synced up and working perfectly. Also familiarised myself with the rest of the Maxidot and the Bolero features, all very nice.

Last night on the way home it was a little chilly so the heated seats got a run and the wife very much liked that feature. The car is smooth, quiet for normal driving but enough engine roar when you poke it to sound like you are having a good time. Despite being on 225/45/17s the ride is smoother over bumps than on my Focus with its 195/60/15s which is nice. The Focus was the MK1 Zetec though so the suspension was a little stiffer.

Family were also all very impressed and thought it looked much nicer in person than the few images of the interior I'd found of the same spec on the internet. It's the classic crappy pictures making things look bad problem.

I've always been pretty good at parking generally however with front and rear sensors and the display on the Bolero it's a breeze. You know exactly how far away you are rather than "eh, thats probably as far as I can go" so you can get into some tighter spaces easier than without the sensors. I also found they were handy when getting out of a space too to ensure that you don't get too close on the front end when pulling out. Really like that feature even though I've done without it for 7 years.

Obviously when we got it from the dealer it only had about 50 miles of petrol in, though they got a rougher deal as my Focus had about 6 miles left :p. Last night I filled up to the second click (only about 47l so clearly there was plenty left) and my Maxidot told me I had a range of about 280 miles. At first I was a little shocked but then realised that it was working on my past consumption. Since the car was new I was exploring the rev range a couple of times and we'd just been driving for 20 minutes with the heated seats on. I'm confident that under normal circumstances I can do much better than that so will report back in circa 300 miles on that front.

I've just booked in to my local RSR tyres who have the Hunter 4 wheel alignment machine so I can get mine checked out tomorrow. It's only £15 for the check so even if everything is good at least I have peace of mind that I shouldn't be chewing through tyres at a totally abnormal rate.

I do have more questions for anyone who might still be reading my inane drivel though :D

I read somewhere on here someone recommend not sitting in drive while stationary for prolonged periods with a DSG. Now I'm guessing that this is because the car wants to creep and so the clutches are sitting there being worn unduly unlike in a traditional auto where there is no clutch causing the creep, just a bucket of oil. Do we just slip into neutral or what?

The mirrors on mine are electrically folding, is there a magical way to get them to fold automatically when the car is locked without me holding the button down?

The clutch disengages when you are stationary with the foot firmly on the brake so you don't need to worry. Although courtesy to people behind as you would in a manual it is better to hold on the handbrake in N when there for a while.

I think you can press and hold the lock key to fold the mirrors.

As for 280mile range, i think you need to have a word with lol on how to get 700miles out of a tank* on the 1.8tsi......

*This info is by no means factual and a little joke that all the longer term members will understand!

Ahh ok I didn't realise the clutch would drop with the brake on. As you said the handbrake is a better option there, though the footbrake light on the dash still appears when in N which I thought would go once the handbrake was on.

I did use the fob to do the mirrors, it just seems silly to have to do it though :p

I think I'm going to have to search for lol's posts from all the references to him hehe.

The footbrake light is there to tell you you need to put the brake on to engage the gearbox, thats all that means.....for stupid people basically.

At least you have folding mirrors....for some reason only known to SUK, folding mirrors aren't an option on the VRS.

Ahh ok thanks for that.

Odd that they remove any choice for so many options on the VRS.

EDIT:

Just ordered a Columbus. £520 posted, V8 maps, LED unit. Just need a surround now.

All sounds very good.

Yes, on the DSG issue it's good practice all-round (including to drivers behind) to engage neutral and the handbrake.

On the folding mirrors issue, I know a few of the L&K folk have looked at getting it to work automatically on lock, via coding with VCDS. Not sure how far they got with that though.

Sounds like you're a happy bunny there, congrats and enjoy

Unless you listen to the IAM....they say leave in D.

Doesn't sound very consistent that - seeing as they advise 'handbrake and neutral' to us manual lot :)

I just wonder if the IAM appreciate the finer points of a dual clutch gearbox though (playing devil's advocate for a moment)

What's the IAM?

I discovered the voice control for the phone today. Worked perfectly both times I tried it and apparently the call quality was good at the other end which is great. Will set up some more people to work so that I have to fiddle less on the wheel.

My Columbus has been posted and should be here in a day or two, I just need to get a new surround and check that the part number I need is the one I think it is. Then I can sell the Bolero and my Pioneer to pay for it!.

Loving the power available when needed, slipped into manual while going around a roundabout in 2nd and then powered out, the sequential shift is nice so I can understand why people like the flappy paddles.

Yesterday after filling it said I had a 280 mile range, tonight I've done a total of 37 miles and it says I have 275 miles left. That was after 2 rather sporting drives on empty late night roads this evening which was more just exploring the car than anything. Will be interesting to see how that changes in the next week or so when I go back to work.

I'm finding that because it is so quiet and smooth that I feel like I'm going slower than I am. In the focus you KNEW you were doing 40 from the engine and the outside noise, in this it's far less the case.

Found all of my car cleaning supplies today. Wife is buying some more bits for me for my birthday to top up a few bits that have vanished!

What's the IAM?

Big thanks to Octavialover who popped over today with his VCDS to turn a couple of bits on and off. Very handy living just a few minutes away!

Also had my alignment checked today, fronts were out a little Toe so that was corrected, everything else in the green.

My Columbus arrived while I was getting my hair done so I'm popping out to collect it tonight. Will be calling Skoda in a moment to try and get the right part number for the new surround.

Also used the cruise control for the first time today which was interesting. Will be handy for some of my work drives.

There is a thread on here somewhere with the part numbers.......on iPad at the minute so can't search....is your surround just black?

I ran for a couple of weeks with no surround!

  • Author

Yeah my Bolero one is just black, I have found the correct surrounds on skodateile.nz but they are only available in wood, silver and cross hatch.

Silver would probably do, though I'd probably spray it eventually to try and match the rest of the piano black.

Just seen your post in the 'Useful Part Numbers' thread, but thought the response is more appropriate here.

The other surrounds you've seen would have been for a pre-FL vehicle as the climate control display is different. Hence it not working for your car.

Skoda Parts list an FL part, but only the silver one. They have a very good Parts Dept and a decent online enquiry system, so they can probably find you the piano black version. This is the info for the silver one though:

OCTAVIA NAVIGATION TRIM 2009-2012

Retail Price £39.88

Skoda Parts Price £37.88

Recommended site though - quick delivery and efficient service.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Steve,

That part seems to be slightly different to the one I need for my climatic controls.

IMAG0346.jpg

My one above,

The linked one below

1314274748.jpg

I've asked Fubar if he has the number for his, and Keith has a black looking one in his VRS that is the same as my climatronic controls and he got that from the dealer so hopefully he has the part number still.

Hopefully I'll get there!

I've just found this page which is in Russian. That part number you mention is in the list and it says

(10) 1Z0858069AB Trim for switch / for the system Navigation / for manually operated conditioner

A PR-7TK +9 W0, 9W5, 9W8, 9ZU

1Z0858069ABBE9 silver

Using the diagram they have it looks like I need type 11 instead of type 10. Using that I think that I need 1Z0858069CSN77 which is listed as

(11) 1Z0858069CS Trim for switch / for the system Navigation Air conditioning with electronic control

A PR-5MQ +8 AY +9AK +9 W4

1Z0858069CSN77 black-piano

OR 1Z0858069CQN77

(11) 1Z0858069CQ Trim for switch / for the system Navigation Air conditioning with electronic control

A PR-5MQ +9 W0, 9W5, 9W8, 9ZU

1Z0858069CQN77 black-piano

No idea what the difference is between them so I'm just emailing Skoda Parts to see what they say.

Thanks for the link to them by the way!

Yep, my link looks like it's for an FL but with the manual HVAC controls.

As you say, they'll be able to tell you which one you need.

Then be sure to put the info in the Parts thread, so we all know for next time :)

  • Author

I will! I'll also add a link to that Russian page with the diagram and the other part numbers which might be handy. I've no idea if that site has other exploded diagrams with other part numbers.

Fubar got back to me with the part number for the silver trim he bought which would fit my car, the part number is on that Russian list in the same place as the black ones I think I need so that's encouraging. Hopefully Skoda Parts will get back to me tomorrow. I might also phone my local parts centre and see what they say about those two numbers.

I picked up my Columbus today from TNT (delivered while I was out, typical). Rather annoyingly despite only selecting "Items in the UK" on Ebay it's still come from the continent. It does however look brand new, was well wrapped, has the code card and the GPS antenna, and is the new model. It also should have the V8 maps installed already.

I'll look tomorrow at how to see what firmware and things it has on it.

If you'll excuse me, I'm off to turn my red light bulb on to pay for it all.

  • Author

Well the Columbus is in and working, the activation code worked which is always a bonus!

Before I put the Columbus in I disconnected the battery and reconnected it to see if the Bolero had a code that would be needed and it didn't. Is a code only needed the first time a unit meets a new car? I suppose that means I'll need to call Skoda for a code for the Bolero before I can sell it.

The fascia for the Bolero unit was a pain to get off, mostly because the clips at the top of the fascia clip TOWARD the radio but the ones everywhere else on it clip AWAY from the radio. Got there eventually though.

The GPS antenna is crazy long so that got spooled up and put under the dashboard vents/pocket like others have also done.

The unit is working fine. I can't seem to find post code entry so I'm wondering if I need a new firmware on there, it already has the v8 maps apparently. If I recall correctly a new firmware will wipe the maps though so I don't want to do it until I have a v8 disk.

On the plus side, Skoda Parts got back to me with a new product listed on their site from the part numbers I gave them, http://www.skodapart...2008-2013-50190 so one has been ordered and we'll see if it fits!

Here is the finished article without its trim

IMAG0358.jpg

Now to try and find out exactly what firmware and maps are on there if possible and find out if putting new firmware on is going to delete the maps and if I can get a maps disk from my dealer.

EDIT: oh yeah, and I lost a torqs bit in there somewhere. I've looked under the seats and mats and it's not there, I think it might have landed on the open lid of the ashtray and then slipped back in there somewhere. Not found out how to get the tray out yet so it's MIA for the moment.
