More than 256kbit would be good to be honest.

But - for £30 for three months I get downloads of up to 300 kb/s true speed . best I ever got on my overpriced Virgin( at a lot more £ £) 10mb WAS 150 -200 KB/S . Problem is that there's a "fair play " policy of 1GB /MONTH download limit. But after that ,they say it's browsing only- I've still downloaded with no problem .Only small stuff I admit .

Is it just me or are VirginMedia pulling a fast one.....so to speak????? I pay for and am supposed to get UP TO 50Mb and they say it's doubling up to 100Mb later this year. However, I NEVER get more than 25Mb on any of the on-line speedtesters.

I have no doubt that one day we will reach a stage where everything is almost instantaneous BUT right now I'm very cautious about the claims made by Virgin.

I've been looking at BT infinity as I am going to be dropping Sky completely as I am now out of the 12 month contract on my internet. Currently I pay Sky £56 a month, and for that I get TV and HD (No sport or movies) and a 4meg internet connection, free evening and weeking calls ont their unlimited upto 20meg package.

I dont watch much TV these days, so will be switching that to Freesat or Freeview.

The FTTC BT street cabinet is located about 300 yds from my front door, and if I switch to BT infinity they are quoting 78meg down and 10meg upload for my address which is way better than my current 4meg download. For this speed BT want a total of £38 a month on their unlimited package, only downside is throttling of P2P and the 18 month contract.

I get widely varying results on Speedtest, I was fiddling last night after reading this thread, I'm in Cardiff, If I use Glouchester, then my ping is uber low(15ms), but I can't get more than 40Mbps, Bournemouth returns a higher ping (36) but I can get 12Mbps.

So really not to be taken as gospel IMHO

You could try manual selecting a server and having a play to see if it gets better

Speedtest is such a synthetic test though, what about downloading from Microsoft.com?

I've had 6MB/s out of this from work before now, but currently only getting 1.55ish. 1.58MB/sec is how fast my home connection is at the moment.

2 weeks ago I was getting about 0.4 mg, having upgraded to BT infinity I now get this

I was guaranteed 20 mb, which I got for the first few days but I am consistently getting this result now

I used to use the Zen test binaries, but the max size is only 100 meg, so gone in the blink if you have fatties man sized connection.

If you do go for it.. check out quidco/topcashback.. can usually get 50-100 back for broadband.

Ordered my Sky Fibre today, install date is the 8th of May, good going considering my exchange live date for fibre was supposed to be the 13th ish of June!
