advice needed fairly urgent to make purchase decision.

Featured Replies

i am just about to purchase my first superb estate elegance, i am torn between the tdi 2-0 litre dpf 140ps and the 170ps

my problem is i tow a trailer and machines that could sometimes weigh around 1400 kg the showroom staff have assured me the 140ps will tow it comfortably but as the towing is a big part of my job i need to get this right. i want the extra mpg the 140ps will give , but could someone tell me this engine tows well.or would i be safer with the 170ps.

regards

Taff.

Hi Taff,

Car from White Dove?

Personally I would go for the 170.

Torque figures are very similar. I've towed 1100kg with a 105bhp 1.9tdi, and would be happy towing 1400kg with the 140bhp.

Thanks Stuart

I do hear people say that you can get the 140 and for very little money get it upto the power of the 170. If so (and I'm sure its true), then you could get the 140 and if you find it inadequate, boost it to 170.

Agree on the sales people but have found the service dept very good. had all my warrenty work done by them (Superb 1). I am though buying from Capitol of Newport as they offered the best deal.

Personally I would buy the 170, the engine will not be working as hard as a 140 and therefore probably give you better fuel economy than the 140 will.

The 140 will be more than adequate for towing, just that the 170 will do it with less effort.

Whilst this is true, the ECU has to be physically opened up to do it, this is the same on the 170 - and most (all?) newer VAG ECU's

Search the forum, White Dove are pretty bad. Capitol in Newport are very good customer facing, although I've had some big problems with servicing there before.

There is a company based near Bristol who simply plug their laptop in and reprogamme the cars software. They can take the 140 up to just over 200. Cost near £300.

From what I understand the new ECUs have software protection on them and they are unable to circumvent that without accessing the ECU itself. My first Superb 2 was able to be done via the OBD port, later ones have to have them physically removed from the car to access the ECU circuit board. Removal of the unit entails having the security bolts drilled out. Reassembly entails new waterproof sealing on the case and refitting to the vehicle with new security bolts. I decided not to have my last two modified. Can someone now say that this is not currently the case.

170

140 should be fine...I currently tow 1500kg with 120PS. But I've ordered a CR170 DSG with paddles so I can have a bit of fun occasionally.

Not with the latest ECU's you can't, it's 'open ECU surgery' only on them.

I've spent a couple of days driving a 140 estate. I have a 170 estate now and before that a 170 hatch. No contest for me.

Good choice. There's little penalty in fuel consumption but noticeably better mid range acceleration with the 170. You won't be disappointed.
