Rising oil level

Featured Replies

Hi All

In short the car was serviced at DM Keith York in Feb on 59,000 miles, admittedly i have been very poor with checked the oil so checked it this morning, way above the max mark?

So, car has done 4,000 miles since service and iv always believed a diesel should burn around half a ltr of oil to every 1000 miles, if anything it should be running rather low?

Iv heard (silver?) that the installation of the new injectors has been bodged and diesel is running into the sump, could this be the case.

Rung DM Kieth and told them the story and she has told me to ring RAC breakdown ASAP, i havent because i need the car for work tonight so it will have live untill later, she sounded rather concerned.

Anyone shed any light on this for me please

Is this the first level check since the service? If so, I suppose that the most likely answer is that they overfilled it at the service.

Hi Ema, yes it was me who was suffering with rising oil levels. Nick_P has also had the same issue, I am waiting for him to update his thread since he dropped it off at the dealers last week.

The common link is that we have all had our injectors replaced recently.

DM Keith in York know all about my rising oil levels so don't let them try the usual 'we've never seen this before' line!

Mine seems to be OK now, they removed and replaced the injectors which seems to have cured the problem. The issue is I don't know how long it was taking for the oil level to rise above MAX so it may still be rising - just not enough for me to notice yet.

I checked it about a month ago but was in abit of a rush so didt get chance to make proper note of it but it was still high then.

Maybe it is an overfill but iv always been led to believe that overfilling the oil can lead to just as many problems as letting it run low, these are suppose to be VAG trained technicians and they cant even get the basic job of filling the oil to correct level right.

My main point being though if it had been over filled and iv done 4000 miles so it will have burnt abit anyways, how high was it before?!

Here is mine a week after an oil change. The oil was just off the plastic and onto the metal.

Thats where mine is roughly..thats far too high though, looking at the picture that i took with the dipstick cleared, the MAX mark is just below that rounded part at the top. Is there some new memo to ignore the markings or something?!

I'm guessing diesel is leaking past the injectors and mixing with the oil.

Didn't you say you had cold starting issues too when the outside air is near or below freezing? Welcome to the club Ema, sounds like the same technician at DM Keith that fitted my injectors fitted yours too.

Just don't Google search 'diesel engine runaway' - a consequence of having too much oil in the engine!

Mine is at the same level as pictured above. It was previously not much over minimum.

Yep got the cold start issue aswell but with it being warmer now its starting fine.

Iv got mine booked into Dereck Slacks Skoda in Middlesbrough on Thursday so have the excess oil taken out so its back at the MAX mark and just keep an eye on it, if it rises again then we know something is wrong but if it stays or burns off DM Keith will be getting a stern email form myself and i am going to rip them to shreds. Also make the point of bodging my front suspension struts, this was noticed when they had to come out, snapping off all the screws locating the air intake and a few other little bits

How can trained people allow this to happen?

I don't think in this instance it is a case of overfilling. Something else is a miss.

The link appears to be the injector change.

I know mine isn,t a 2.0tdi but everytime i had my oil change done at the dealer they always overfilled without fail.I took it back everytime also for them to drain some out.The last oil change i had i told them to not overfill it as i will check it before i leave. It was spot on this time. The problem is with mine is that it doesn,t use any oil between changes and overfill is always a chance of damage.

Hopefully yours maybe just overfilled (fingers crossed).

That call was logged into the computer system, if you continue to use it and something happens to the engine they can deny all responsibly as they told you not to drive it. She did look worried as did the guy she told afterwards. I was stood waiting for parts and heard some of her end of the conservation. She was also writing on the computer as you were both talking.

I do hope this is a case of overfilling then i know to give the the spanner monkey (i will find out which one it was!) a lesson on how to fill a car with engine oil correctly, not to use DM Keith again and most importantly theres nothing wrong with the car. Then again if this does turn out that the injectors have been put in incorrectly there is someone to blame!

This time 6 month ago there was me thinking that the best possible treatment for a car was for it to go to main dealer, this seems to be have tainted somewhat, i know some back street garages that treat my car with more respect :wonder:

By the sounds of it and by your location you work for DM Keith? Lucky it turned out i got a lift to work (i can prove this) and only drove it from the top of the street (where i tested the oil) back onto my drive. The car will have to be driven on Thursday to get to Dereck Slacks as they know the full story and they have told me to drive the car car to them to have excess oil drained.

If its any consolation Ema when I informed the same dealer that my oil level was increasing they told me to 'do a few more thousand miles' and bring it in for them to take a look.

Nope I don't work for them, was waiting for the parts guy so I could buy some anti freeze lol.

Ema,would it not be better to take the car back to dm kieth in york for them to rectify their mistake rather than get another dealer to look at it,if they are that worried about you driving it they should either get it recovered to them or send out skoda assist to look at it,is your car still under warranty from when you purchased the car from dm kieth? If it was me id want it back at the dealer (at their cost) & the oil drained & tested for fuel contamination & if it is fuel in the oil then the injectors removed & fitted correctly & some compensation.

Such a funny name fora dealer dmkeith lol

Guys I know lots of guys that got injectors in Ireland done and have had no issues at all so what's the story in the uk?

I wouldt happily go back to them but its an hours drive, im working class here! haha The other dealership is alot closer and im up that area on a regular basis and iv heard very good things from them. If DM Keith want to pay my fuel or have my car recovered and send me a loan im happy to do that but i doubt that will be the case

Draining the excess oil isn't the best option here as said. I would want the oil changed to the correct level to make sure diesel isn't getting in there.

If diesel is getting in there the oil isn't doing as good a job lubricating the engine. If it has been mixed there is damage being done and allowing it to mix more with oil that could have been diluted already isn't a good idea.

  • Author

Yeah i know, will strip the bores among other things. I would get an oil change but as stated above..im not made of money people!

Funny thing is though i cant smell diesel in the oil?

Number one priority is to reduce the oil level to where it should be.

Secondly you need to determine if fuel is mixing with the oil or whether or not it has simply been overfilled.

The dealer 'should' be able to answer both of these questions for you Ema.

I'd be tempted to call Kerry at DM Keith and explain that it is difficult for you to get over to York and that you are taking it to another closer dealer.

That way you'll be covered from both angles.

I'm assuming that as the injectors were replaced FOC and have a two year warranty on them you are free to take it back to any approved Skoda franchise?

Just be warned though, if they determine that the increasing oil level isn't as a direct result of something they have done (i.e. the injector change) they may want to try and charge you for taking a look at it. Are you still under the Skoda approved used car warranty? If so then you've nothing to worry about.

  • Author

Its still under Skoda Approved Warranty yes, Ill ring them and tell them im taking it to the dealership in middlesbrough due to distance, theres nothing i can do about that.

Silver my injectors were changed at DM in York so im assuming they have the 2 year warranty?
