M.O.T. immissions fail

Featured Replies

Just spent £140 on getting the back box, a wheel bearing, cv boot and a brakeline replaced for the mot, they couldn't test the immissions because of the damaged exhaust...it's not passed due to a high reading on the immissions but he didn't actually say which one...

I've been asked to drain the fuel out of it (leaving about 5/10 litres so he can add something to the fuel -i'm thinking stp)

If it doesn't pass, it's looking like a new cat or lambda sensor i'm thinking (after reading a few threads on here)

Anyone know where i can get a cheap or secondhand one? I've maxed out my credit card paying for the work and MOT so money is tight...

Any help or advice welcome...

The car is a 1.3GLXi, 1996 (N)

We need to know which one, or more to the point, all the readings from the emissions test. Only with that can anything useful be said!

You should have been given a printout with the failure notice, emissions can fail for all sorts of reasons and the printout is key to diagnosing. Replacing the backbox does nothing for emissions, only makes the car quieter.

the backbox was actually detatched completly, but it hadn't got any louder... so i didn't know until it failed on thursday last week, today it went in had the jobs done and retested, but couldn't get a decent reading (said one level was twice as high as it should be...)

I think he want's to throw some 'cat cleaner' in but with having a full tank, it would of diluted it too much to show any improvement, so i'm draining the tank tomorrow and putting 5 litres back in and trying again (he's not charging for a re-test or the re-re-test - it's only failing on the emmissions now...)

I can get a new cat for under £44 via ebay in needed, haven't priced a sensor yet...

As above...without seeing the actual figures it's anybody's guess. any money you chuck at it now without actual emissions figures is potentially money down the kermit.

oh and don't bother with pattern part cats off eBay for £44, they are crap, might get you through the mest if you arer lucky but you will need another one next year too

There is a good chance the problem has been caused by the detached back box, this will lower the back pressure into the engine and mess up the sensor readings, so the emu will adjust the fuel/air settings incorrectly and mess up the emissions; I would suggest taking it for a good, long, high speed run and have the emissions checked again while the engine is still fully hot.

well, with the new backbox and a can of 'cat cleaner' dropped into an almost empty tank, the readings were absolutly spot on this afternoon, it flew through it's re-test with flying colours, so i'm a happy skoda owner once again.

The garage owner couldn't believe it - a 16 year old skoda felicia, 57,700 miles on the clock (genuine - got every MOT since it's first in 1999) with an almost full tank of fuel!

Congrats, happy driving for another year!

My tester is shocked with mine too as it's a '97 with only just hitting 40k from factory :D

You guys are making me feel old now having just turned 100k! Still going strong though having received a fairly high degree of TLC to date.

Happy motoring guys!

lee how you get on with mirror loom and mines only done 60k engine 66k they love mine at mot place

Takes 6 constant miles of driving to get the cat fully working and at correct temperature. Lambda sensors send small voltage to the computer to indicate the oxygen level so if say your back box wasnt connected it would have reduced the back flow pressure and annoyed it. Good hard run before every MOT test puts you 1 step closer to an mot pass

Its good to see someone agrees with me.

hi,my xreg 1.3mpi just passed it's MOT yesterday, but they didn't do an emissions test they said it's not needed on any car over 10 years old, sounds fine to me my other 'car' is a 1963 swb land rover with a modern TDI 2.5 in it and it doesn't get emmision tested(and it's tax exempt),so it must be where you go for an MOT that counts,i f i were you i'd try somewhere else or find a mate that works in a garage!!,i have a few places that i could take my cars to that just park it round the back for 45mins then give you an MOT for£50,but i wouldn't take mine there unless it failed at a legit garage!!!!!

The Landy not getting an emissions test is correct - it's tested on the age of the oldest of either vehicle or engine. The Fel, however, should do - they won't be testing for long! Any petrol car post 1 August 1975 has to have an emissions test...

Few places like that down this way I suspect. Won't touch them with a barge pole and the sooner they lose their testing licence the better.

Only once has my 1.3 Favorit (26,000 miles) failed MoT on emissions. Solved the problem by fitting a new air filter. May be worth remembering !

I had an old Type 25 1.6 diesel vw van a few years ago which failed on emissions and a binding brake. I did the old 'thack it round the bypass on the way to get an MOT. Passed on both counts! I was also told not to put fresh oil into an engine just before a test as this can have a effect on the emission reading. No idea if there is any truth in it?? But I've never had a car fail on emissions since and alway time the oil change for after an MOT? Might be unfounded??

There would have to be something seriously wrong with the engine for an oil change to mean it would fail the MOT...which it would fail anyway as a result of said problem?

my cat rattles like a bell sounds funny but never going to pass the emissions wish mot places ere would not check mine a does make it faster having no cat
