(Another) Speaker Upgrade Selection.

Featured Replies

Just got a Fabia VRS Mk1, and it desperately needs the speakers changing (and the HU of course), I'm a bit of an audiophile so although, I guess, the stock speakers aren't 'bad' (The ones in my old fiesta defined 'bad') they're hardly great!

So a few basic questions regarding replacing, I've had a fairly decent search all over the interwebs and think I know more or less what I'm doing, but to Iron some stuff out (and get some user opinions!):

1) From looking in the car it has front speaker pair, tweeters in the upper part of the rear doors, and 2 rear speakers on the sides of the parcel shelf. There doesn't appear to be speakers in the rear doors themselves. The car is in getting a good full service at the moment so I can't go out and check everything but one thing I did notice is when changing front/rear balance on the Symphony HU when set to fully front, only the front speaker was active. When set to rear, rear parcel shelf side speakers were active with the rear door tweeters. This seems weird to me? Are the tweeters in the rear doors not those paired with the front speakers? There are no 'front' tweeters as the small panel near the wingmirror houses the wingmirror control.

2) So assuming that the above is as I expect, I first want to replace the front speakers, rear can wait for later. I need some components, aye? How does the wiring work between the crossover going to the tweeter in the rear door? I'm guessing either I'm going to stick to the OEM wire, or it's going to be a huge pain to get a new wire through (again, I'd like to have a look now exactly where this wire travels but can't). Is it a possibility to just stick some coax's in the front and be done with it, disconnect the OEM tweeters in the rear doors and call it a day for the front? (a compromise I know, but I'm pretty ****e at disassembling (and possibly worse at re-assembling) cars...).

3) I think it's unlikely (for the reason stated above) that I'll be using an amp any time soon, so I was looking at this HU: http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/kenwood-kdc5051u-car-cd-mp3-stereo-tuner-front-usb-auxin-ipod-iphone-ready-p-25289.html with 4x50W outputs.

Bearing that in mind, what speakers would you recommend? Was looking at the Alpine SPR-60 Type R's (http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/alpine-spr60c-typer-speakers-165cm-2way-component-car-speakers-p-26430.html) or the similar coax version if I was to go down that road, heard a lot of good stuff about them, though would there be better options without an amp?

Anything (advice or product suggestions) that could save me a few pennies wouldn't go amiss either...

Thankyou muchly in advance!

Chris

There are tweeters behind the panel that is the back of the wing mirrors in the front. Componenets are the usual route to go in the front, it just involves spacing out with adaptors or mdf rings as the mounting depth is an issue.

The rear tweeters are wired into the connector with the rear speakers, tbh they aren't really needed, I've kept mine in as I need a bit of a treble boost to balance out the bass.

HU wise Alpine and Pioneer are usually the best for sound quality and performance. A few on here are also using Sony's but I've not heard any of the modern ones.

Putting a decent HU in transforms the sound quality, the standard speakers aren't awful and seem to take a fair bit of punishment.

Cheers for the reply!

Ah that makes more sense, I didn't even think to look there really, I'll definitely go for components then in the front, as it shouldn't be too hard to get them in (touch wood). And I guess I'll leave the standard rears in for now, as you say the tweeters are positioned pretty conveniently for the front seats to benefit also.

Also, there was a couple of alpine HU's I'd been having a look at, so maybe I'll splash out a little more. I gather I need one of these: http://www.nexxia.co.uk/product.asp?section=Single%20Din%20Fascia&category=Skoda%20Single%20Din%20Fascia&product_code=CT24SK01 ?
