New TV time - LED or LCD ?

Featured Replies

Looking for a new TV to replace a 26" Philips which has served us very well.

Limited to £400 and can't go any larger than 32/37" as the room isn't big enough. Am currently looking at the LE37D550 but am just baffled by all the different TVs that were in Currys earlier

Not interested in 3D or the need for internet on a TV! Do have SKY with a HD box (although not HD package) so just watch the free HD channels. Not a massive movie watcher either TBH.

Any thoughts or alternatives to consider?

Also seen the 32" Samsung EH5000 ??

  • Agreed, There is so much confusion, with people believing that LED TV's are a lot more than they really are its very confusing. LCD = LCD panel lit by CCFL bulbs LED = LCD panel lit by LEDs, as me

  • You know, I think you've just presented yourself with the idiot of the week award. LED TV is not running LED's it's LED's doing the job of a back light instead of a cold cathode. I've already said t

What reason are you saying the room isn't big enough? You would be surprised how big you can go.

I have a 40inch in a 15'x10' living room and it looks fine.

LED or LCD? Doesn't really matter tbh as LED is just how the screen is lit....it is still a LCD screen.

I would avoid buying from Curry's too and go to Amazon or even better John Lewis if you can get a price match to currys if it is cheaper there as you get 5 years warranty with JL.

Sorry to disagree, but LED and LCD are different technologies.

LED will offer you MUCH crisper & richer colours than LCD, as well as being more energy efficient.

Check out an LED & an LCD next to each other on the same channel, and see how much nicer the LED picture is

I bought this in November last year and absolutely love the quality it gives with my XBox and Blu Ray...

http://www.amazon.co...34523413&sr=8-8

We have 2 of the same TV but in a 40" size, LED in the front room and a LCD in the back room, Sony Blu Ray and both connected to Virgin plus Boxes

Well chuffed

Sharp's "Quadra" displays have been getting good reviews.

I have a LED, LCD and Plasmas in my house. I have the plasmas as its a 50" screen and i think LCD looses quality at that size. LEDs are very crisp, but i find watching TV in the led can be "to bright" at times. LEDs look the dogs on Xbox. very very good for gaming, and most LEDs are very high refresh rate.

LCD are alot warmer and a good all rounder for gaming, TV and film.

Plasma, i have never really liked plasma but i must admit, our main TV is a 600htz plasma and it copes with fast gaming no problem.

I think it all depends what you want from your screen. if you want it to be bright, colorful LED is for you.

if you want a good contrast of colors and a more "natural" look is say go for LCD. Plasmas seem to cope with dark colors better so shines when watching films etc but again a good all rounder.

Richer sounds is the mutts nuts, i have used them for years and if a problem was to arise they change it over no questions asked. unlike currys and such likes that will want it back for 4 weeks or so. I would also recommend getting a HDMI digital amp with matching HDCP DDC protocols to your screen. Not only does it open up many many inputs to your screens, you can switch your HDMI signal around your house and watch HD tv all over the house at the same time. this is cool for xbox/cctv too.. take your controller to bed, turn the xbox on and use the amp to send the xbox hd signal to your bedrom tv, or if you have cctv you can view your dvr all round the house!

Im not no Professional but love my toys, choosing your TV is like choosing your wheels. only you can decide what you like the most.

thats my 2pence.

LED does look good, but it will still be an LCD panel with an LED backlight

Sorry to disagree, but LED and LCD are different technologies.

Nonsense!

There are three types of screen...

OLED - This is what most people imagine an LED TV would be. It uses LEDs for the pixels and needs no backlighting

LCD - This uses an LCD panel for the pixels and uses CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) for backlighting

LED - This should be called LED-LCD or something similar as it uses an LCD panel for the pixels and LED for backlighting. The are two types. Edge lit which is similar to CCFL and local dimming. The latter does produce better pictures as the backlighting is dynamically controlled to give the best results for the image displayed.

As has been said led and lcd are essentially the same technology, it should be lcd or led lcd. They both use an lcd panel to control the light output. The led utilise white led (in most sets) to provide the light source generally with the led at the edge of the panel. The lcd uses cold cathode tubes to provide the light source behind the panel.

As has been said led can be brighter as modern led have huge light output, downside to this particularly with the edge lit sets is lack of conformity across the screen and light bleed (black screen has grey areas).

Like everything in life there is a myriad of options, so just go with the one you like the look and picture on.

You're wrong

The clue is in the name.........

LED - Light Emitting Diode

LCD - Liquid Crystal Display

Of course they are different technologies, how can you say they're the same.

If you look at the discription of a " LED" tv it says LED backlit. It is NOT a LED telly, it is a LCD telly with a LCD backlight, so is in essence a LED telly with a more reliable backlight not some " new" technology tv.

LCD = LCD panel lit by CCFL bulbs

LED = LCD panel lit by LEDs, as mentioned by some they can be edge lit (most are) or truly back lit.

Anyone who says otherwise has got it wrong.

OLED, well thats a different ball game. Once they sort out the reliability issues and can make a screen big enough I am sure it will be great.

My living room is probably about same size, perhaps just a big longer so didn't want it over powering the room. The current TV is on a wooden unit which stands about 3 ft high so didn't want it too big. But I reckon that given the prices of 40" this is what we'll go for.

Just using Currys for reviewing and looking at them at the mo.

Have been browsing Richer Sounds site - friend of mine used to work at the Leics one. May consider them but it's a PITA to get to and park which doesn't help but if it saves me some cash!!!

Thanks All for the clarification on LCD and LED - I really am none the wiser now!!!

I've always found that if you have the metal to tangle with Gumtree you can always find someone that's a dealer in flat screens.

I bought one a year back, a 32" Samsung somethingorother for £190 and it worked perfectly, when I picked it up the guy basically explained to me that the T.V was part of a clear out of old stock from some company somewhere (I wasn't really paying attention as I was trying to get away before he put the price up) to make way for "next seasons" T.V's.

I'd go for LED too ^-^

There's no real difference to be fair, it's just easier to say xD

I got my new one at Christmas from Dixons, £315 but I was in a clearance sale

Thanks Lazy D - still toying with a lower spec 40" or high spec'd 32", not sure though? Given the differences between 37" and 40", have dropped having a 37". What's 3" eh?

If you have a John Lewis near you, good service, knowledgeable staff, and you get a 5 year guarantee. The buying guide in the link above should answer all your questions.

Had a look at that last night Kenny actually - very useful.

LCD = Liquid Crystal Display

So you can get an LCD with a cold cathode back light and you can get an LCD with either a back or side lit LED back light.

Both are still using LCD technology, to filter the light provided to give you your image.

LED screens are not a bank of LED's making up pixels and each pixel emitting light in the same way as plasma, OLED and CRT screens do.

I still believe Plasma is the best technology for the time being, and am more than happy with my 600hz Panasonic Viera 42".

ST, GT or VT and they are rather nice :)
