Pasty's New Alloy Project - FINISHED & FITTED

Featured Replies

As some of you may have followed/seen/noticed I've been bitten by an alloy wheel refurbing bug.

I have previously done 2 sets of 16" spiders through necessity from this

but as a glutton for punishment that I am I've decided to have another go at it!

It wasn't exactly my fault though - I put in a cheeky offer on an eBay listing which i never thought would be accepted; and it was.

As such i'd accidentally purchased a set of wheels, a fact that initially went down like a lead baloon with the other half.

So here we have my latest project a set of VW/BBS Golf/Bora Montreal 2's in decent condition

  • Id say do the red, but then I'm a little bit odd when it comes to wheels as you know.

I will be watching with interest :)

Oh hold on did i say decent?

What i actually meant was AWFUL!

I'm not sure if these wheels were poorly made by BBS but my father in law had a very similar issue with the Montreals on his PD150 Golf. The lacquer on his started corroding and spread like wild fire through the entire rim.

These though might actually be worse as you name a type of damage and these wheels have it

ah well it'll all add to the sense of satisfaction when i'm finished.

That said I stuck one on just to see what they'll look like and (from a distance) i'm pretty happy already!

Even sporting 55 profile tyres (which make it look a bit 4x4) i think they look pretty good.

This actually causes a bit of a dilemma as i wasn't planning on doing them silver but they do look awfully good.....

More than open to suggestions for colour/colour combo ;)

nice  you gonna paint them red?

Got 2 sets of alloys (vrs/spiders) both need of some lovin! :'(

What do you use for filler in the bigger gouges?

Id say do the red, but then I'm a little bit odd when it comes to wheels as you know.

Nice little project!

Sand blast them to save some time and effort!

You have some skills if you sort that wheel out!!

Need to pull my finger out and make a start on my spare!

I bought a tub of this stuff which is a polyester filler with aluminium in it for extra strength

yeah this may need to happen. When my father in law had his refurbed they needed acid dipping.....twice!

I was tempted with red although i'm leaning towards two-tone

Something like Leon's wheels on his mk2 estate

dark grey spoke silver outer?

Silver spokes and red inner?

That could work and would look quite good.

Red and silver works, done one of my TSWs in that colour, only one mind ;)

Thanks, I will look out for it, never get time for car these days :(

How about red outers and black inners?

well the sandind has begun and it's not as bad as i thought it would be.

That said i have only done the wheel with the least corrosion.

We'll see

I know it's been done to death but black on red would look amazing! Or... White?

  • Author

yeah well already having black wheels i wanted to try something different.

White i fancy but I'm not strict enough with a cleaning regime to make it work.

I have a horrible feeling i'm going to test spray one gold ;)

2 evenings down and 2 wheels done 2 to go

i'm a ittle concerned about what to do with the inside as i'm not sure if they are corroded, knackered or just dirty!

Those are some skills! I'm still in awe of the transformations on your first post!

I'd try a wire wheel in a drill gently on the inner hub and reverse of spokes, should do the job.

I would not have the patience (or tools I think) for this sadly. Chap 10 miles away does a spanking job for £250.

Admire your commitment to this, Cliff!

Looking good mate.

As everyone has said, you've got skills. :D

Thank you boys I try my best.

Thing is Jay i'm heavy on free time and light on cash ;)

I'd much rather dedicate my time and tens of pounds; than pay someone else hundreds of pounds for the same result.

Tools wise - a heavy grit sand paper, 3 grades of wet & dry paper, sanding blocks fo various sizes, a tub of filler - thats about the lot.

So far the time count is up to about 4 hours and expediture (given everything listed above was left over for the previous jobs) is at a massive £5 to get the rubber removed!

I'd try a wire wheel in a drill gently on the inner hub and reverse of spokes, should do the job.

I've got a wire brush that i'll attack them with, then sand it down to finish.

The pictures above are after i scrubbed with a scourer during the intial clean; so if it is dirt its well ground in!

I might splash on a tin of etch primer for the insides just to guarantee adhesion.

After refurbing tons of wheels I was gonna do my fabia ones but then a guy started a business doing wheels literally 100 from my house. Really can't go wrong with £180 including fitting and balancing!

Me like wheels very much..

I think gold will be awesome, the question is what type of gold..?

You could get halfords to custom colour cans for spraying..

  • Author

i think halfords have about 5 differnet shades of gold anyway so i can pick from ford solar gold, rather than subaru wheels gold

is it wrong to really like this ;)

FabiaGoldMontreal2.jpg

my other go to answer at the moment is white

although i feel the other half may dictate that i "just be bloody sensible and do them silver"

what does anyone think of this?

I like white wheels on black car, however I don't think I will like cleaning them :D
