Time and date can slide over time, when you plug it into computer and go into settings and save them it takes the time off computer there and then. I have been on the latest FW since it came out checked again last week first time in ages and no updates still. I have had no problems at all, touch wood! When starting car a lot of cars seem to when key is in on position all electrics start but when using start sprung position to start engine a lot seem to kill all power while this takes place for a second, that could well be the issue. Slow start is a good call, most likely what it's for. If that fails just use it without auto start on and when car running just press the button on camera to start recording.

Annoyingly I thought saving the settings would sort my date/time but it didn't or maybe I just imagined I did that, lol

Reading on their pages, it does point to the delay after giving it power so it is in a shutdown process, but oddly 1.7 was never a problem.

Will let you know how I get on with the slow start, fingers crossed it cures it. I don't want to keep having to turn it on and should someone else use it, I want them not to know they aren't being recorded (garages, not wife)

  • It's funny. Before I found this site, I would never have dreamt of doing mods or even considered buying a dash cam! A bad influence you lot are!!

  • This picture should sum up what I got around to today and what element to this task went wrong after I returned from an extended test drive for a comparison video v the Blackvue.........     chrisw

  • Because you'll have a dead phone after a while from it constantly writing to the flash memory, unless you use a replaceable card.   Because you can leave the camera in the car when parked up to catc

I updated the firmware on my 0803 using the micro SD card and for no obvious reason doing so moved the time forward by 16 hours.

My GPS equipped Blackvue went back in time a couple of days not long after I applied a firmware update. Spooky! Its in the firmwares!!!

@FUBAR

Funny you should mention the date - just yesterday I noticed that my Mobius had, for no reason reset its internal date to 01/01/2013.  Only found this when putting the SD card in the laptop and noticed the dates on the 5 minute segments. No software updates had been done, and wondering if this could have been caused by either the looping round to delete previous video clips, whether it has been caused by a heat problem in the car, or whether the internal battery of the camera had somehow drained. Having said that, I can't see that, as one recording was dated 18/07/14 @06.51 (as I drove into work), the next recording was when I drove home at 17.30 the same day and found the date on this recording was 01/01/13 @08.25. So the date reset itself at 09.05, and it certainly wouldn't have been too hot in the car at that time.

Took the camera out of the car, and simply clicked the date/time sync, and all is well again. Also charged it fully with a mains/USB plug, Will be closely monitoring.

This could have serious implications for the video clips used if the date and time are wrong.

Any comments?

Mike

Only one of mine did it, it's evident in some of my videos as when I cut between front and rear cameras the timing is correct but displayed times were apart. Could just be the tiny battery inside giving up the ghost. One of mine is about 6 months older than the other. Heat could do all sorts of things too I suppose, front cameras on windscreen will suffer some serious heat in the sun! Take an infared thermometer and point it at the camera from inside the car when you go to it after sitting in the sun, I bet it's 70-90Deg C ish!

I have a different make but mine loses time and date too. I also think it is the heat when left in teh sun.

So whats a ok cheap one.... One that can be used for a drive across Europe and one that has night vision...

No such thing as night vision unless your looking to spend thousands of pounds, some pick up better in low light situations than others. If wanting to go as cheap as possible GW1 is just under £32 delivered Mobius which is popular is just under £42 delivered and mini 0803 is £58-£69 delivered depending if you want GPS and built in memory or not. All of which you will need to buy a micro SD card for and will typically get on a 32gb card 2.5hours to 4 hours depending on camera and settings so if wanting to keep the entire trip will require stopping to back it up regularly or an unlimited supply of memory cards.

I really like the motion detect function on the mini 803. It will only keep the recording if something moves in-shot so as long as I park out of the way it will keep a very concise record of what happened.

Caught my daughter kicking the car as well as some really comical parking manouevres from drivers probably totally unaware that they had their tongue hanging out etc. On my drive it records the number plate of every passing vehicle - quite what I could use that for I am not sure but it is pretty cool.

Cheers fubar... Not looking to record the whole trip. More of a backup plan as im going to Poland and would rather have some footage if some jack off tries to blame me for something.... If i am going to record something and want to store it then i will back it up. Internal is going to be my likely option and Night Vision was just more infrared or something that would be able to record some footage at night which most of my journey would be taking place. GPS is a must and will certainly consider that as my option number one.. Cheers again.

I was hoping for this to be completed by now but being hit by a foreign driver makes the whole process ridiculously protracted. I will say Direct Line haven't impressed, with my file only being chased up when I call rather than all the time. C'est la vie as the driver of the coach might say. The repairs have been done however and the repair shop I chose have done a good job replacing both ns doors and fixing a rear quarter dent.

This is with a Roadhawk HD camera as it says, which I wired in off a piggy back fuse in the fusebox - thanks for the tips in this thread. The quality is not representative as it's a screencapture off the Roadhawk software which shows GPS location etc, and since that's not a standard resolution Youtube completely chomped the video up when I uploaded it. Looks better in 1080p. The sound synchronisation fault has been fixed in a recent firmware.

I know the Roadhawk is an expensive option but if it saves my £300 excess it's already paid for itself, so I'm happy :)

Bugger! Glad to hear the cam helped you though in the event!

Found this whilst looking at my footage on YouTube. Not sure I like what the guy has done, but hiding it from view is pretty cool if you had a long enough lead

Yea you can do a much neater job than techmoan (assuming that's his vid of it, haven't clicked on it?). Best bet if wanting to be ultra stealth is to drill a hole in back casing of a rear view mirror if big enough and open it up fire it all in there with lens fixed neatly in place pointing out and route the power cable nice and neatly. After that the mobius unit above head lining and the extension lens cable down and into rear view mirrors internal cavity and a hole to mount it.

If I knew what I was doing I would mount it in the rear view mirror, like you say much neater and quite discreet. Thankfully mine is hidden from my view in the car behind the mirror, still allows me to save footage and easy access for upgrading firmware or downloading footage

Quick question guys, just about to order the Mobius, I'm also getting the 3M USB cable too to reach from the rear view mirror to the fusebox.

How does the USB attach to the piggyback fuse holder?

Do you have to cut the end of the USB cable off? If so I'm guessing this reveals a positive and negative (positive for the piggyback fuse holder and negative for the earth)?

The fuse holder has the crimp on it already.

I've never opened up a USB cable before!

Slightly off the current track, the only thing about the Mobius that annoys me is the cable sticking out of the back of it being visible and the stress that seemingly gets placed on the usb plug if you keep the wire taut to avoid too much showing.  I solved that for £2 by ordering and fitting two of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400543663916 in series around the camera so the cable goes in from the front but to the side.  By wrapping the cable around the thread of the mount I can keep the cable out of sight and out of the viewing frame, and all behind the mirror.

Hopefully the photos will help show what I mean.  Maybe this will appeal to others as equally ocd about these things as me!

Gutted, this seller no longer has these, all of the others on eBay are huge.

Anyone know where these are still available to buy?

You need to purchase something else to create the USB end. Something like this, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-12V-to-5V-3A-Step-down-Converter-Buck-Regulator-to-2-Female-USB-Output-Car-UK-/221496863212?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Measurement_Equipment_ET&hash=item33923de9ec

And that also steps the voltage down from the 12v car supply to the 5v needed for the camera.

This is the only seller I can recall from the time I ordered. I see the listing has ended but is it worth a message to them?

Ah, of course, thanks guys. It of course makes sense that the Mobius wouldn't appreciate a full 12V supply!

The Mobius threw me a little as it doesn't appear to have the usual 12V / cigarette lighter plug on the power cable.

The step-down adaptor pictured above looks neat, I can use the second USB outlet and feed it into the coin drawer under the light switch to act a phone charger!

Is the step down to 5V 3A enought to power the Mobius?

Yes it only needs 1 amp from memory.

3A is more than it needs but I have found that for cables longer than 3meters it makes a difference to the camera starting up and recording auto first time every time (in the last vRS, I want a long USB cable from front to back lol)

General idea with the USB is that you can use a usb adaptor for 12v socket. They are pretty bare bones and the price is still fantastic for it. I wish they would come out with an uprated version though soon (there are already 2 versions of the same Mobius we all talk about on here), but I mean a all new model up.

Roy, when I installed my Mobius, I used a single 12 volt to 2 x USB outlets dropper, which was piggy backed from an ignition live in the fuse box. The Mobius plugged into one of the USB outlets, and I've used a separate USB extension cable plugged into the other outlet, taken to one of the blank switches below the climate panel to provide an instant and permanently fitted USB charging socket.

The USB on the dash looks neat Mike, nice!

I don't fancy pulling out the radio / Climatronic so my second USB will be terminating in the little drawer under the lightswitch, like this...

I have a 3 meter cable on order. As it stands on the Superb a 2 meter cable would have sufficed (drivers side fuse box up the A-pillar and along the headlining), nevermind.

A fellow member over on the MkII Superb forum had an issue with an unreliable outlet voltage on the 12V/5V step-down box I've bought (the one linked earlier this evening by zeffania), but he replaced the battery in the Mobius with the optional capcitor which may have contributed to the issue.

Here is the Mobius in his Superb. He modified the windscreen mount to make it even more compact. A very neat set-up...

I just need to find a good 32Mb micro-SD card (Kingston reported to be supported well by the Mobius) and a right angle mini USB connector to angle the power cable either to the side or up into the headlining now!

I got a 32gb micro SD card from currys of all places. It was only about £18 with an SD adaptor.
