A good tablet?

Featured Replies

I am in need of a decent tablet for home, but don't have a clue what to look for, other than knowing the Apple is supposed to be OK.

We need something easy to use, with a screen that doesn't make your eyes tired and that connects to wireless broadband.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. :)

It doesn't need to be the best out there, just something easy to use and reliable.

The new iPad, wireless, 3g or both

The End

Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a lovely machine. I use one in school. But if you want to go Apple, the new iPad is pretty good too. The battery could've been better though.

Samsung Galaxy Tab get my vote.

I agree with Andy.

The wealth of [quality] apps make it head and shoulders above all others.

New iPad, the screen on the new one is worth the extra £70 over the iPad 2 in my opinion.

iPad.

The iPad couldn't be easier to use.

Movies and images are crystal clear and the screen is big enough to watch them on but not too big that the device is troublesome to transport.

Loads of good apps.

On the negative side, the iPad built in speaker is mono but sound quality is ok.

(3.5mm jack for stereo headphones gives the option of external stereo speakers and Bluetooth headphones work well)

iPad does not support flash content which can be a pain if you like watching YouTube videos.

I have the ipad2

If I had the choice again, I would still buy one but wouldn't be bothered about getting the 3 as there doesn't seem to be any difference between the two in the real world.

There isn't an iPad 3, it's called the " New iPad "

I have the Asus Transformer Prime not my first tablet and binned ipad2 when picking new one and didn't wait for "the new ipad" either for the Transformer Primes greater functionality. If your only looking something basic no need to consider the top end ones at all. IOS (apple) or Android both are user friendly intuitive interfaces and so easy to use. You can get a good quality Android tablet that would do you for internet browsing and all the apps stuff if your not looking to run the newer high demand games for £100-£140. The expensive ones are great but if you don't really need one and might not get full use from it id go with something like an Archos 101.

ps. ipad was a no go for me because I also wanted to be able to play movies on it too without having to mess about and with no memory card slots you are limited (forcing customer who wants larger memory to buy it from them already in it not allowing you to put a memory card in is just being tight) and having to convert videos to play on it is inconvenient and takes forever. My Transformer Prime has 96GB of memory in it at moment and a good collection of entertainment ready for me to watch if I am out and about (these days HD stuff takes up some space and I am not having to sit and wait for 4 or 5 hours converting the same file so that it will play on ipad). Also it has a longer battery, brighter screen, lighter, thinner, USB Port, mini HDMI port, micro SD slot, SD slot, better cameras front and back, FLASH, keyboard dock which expands battery life even more and charges the tablet. Most android tablets have all these features which the ipads lack otherwise I would have bought one of those most likely. The Samsung Galaxy range is very competitive for price at moment fantastic value for money.

Which ever ones you decide to look at get on youtube and see some honest owner reviews of each individual one and maybe some head to head ones avoiding the obviously byist ones towards either way.

I've had both and must agree that it's hard to see the difference with the 'new iPad'.

....... But Steve Jobs was sending me a message from the 'other side' telling me I just had to buy it though.

In saying that, I think the best value is with the iPad 2.

Archos are a pile of poo, I see quite a high return rate of them at work. A very cheap tablet will likely have a very poor screen and/or be a very slow experience. Any decent Android tablet will be easy to use too, but you won't get good battery life until you get up the ranges anyway.

Get something decent, not just cheap, you'll regret it if you go cheap.

You say you have lots returned and its a very poor "tablet" which one of the entire archos range of android tablets as there are about 15 on the market at moment all at different levels of cost and functionality? I was looking at the G9 ones and decided against but by no means would I call them poor I have owned 2 or 3 Archos ones never had any dramas or problems at all nor have any of the people I know with them. At the end of the day if your only looking to do the basics like browsing music videos etc why not get one that suits the need. Along the same lines that we are all in Skoda's not Audi's, don't have to buy the most expensive version of something if there is a similar one that will do the job suiting your needs and you will never use it to its full potential.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 if you want something a bit more portable. Super AMOLED Plus screen is a gem. 3g version also has full phone functionallity

No memory slots?

That seems a bit daft and rules it out as I want to be able to swap stuff between the computer and the tablet easily, pop the camera memory card in etc...

Thanks for the advice so far guys. :)

The big benefit to me as I am on the road a lot is that I do not need a computer to plug it into in any way shape or form if I don't want to I can plug an external HDD in (inc power a 2.5" portable one via the USB) and move stuff around between the 2. I see that as a very basic necessity that apple tell their customers they do not need....... its a shame as for that, expandable memory and allowing them to play any format of video (like they could with the VLC Player app before they realised if let you and pulled it from the app store) they would be tip top.

Just benchmarked mine if its of any use. The new Samsung Galaxy SIII appears to be the most powerful android device around at moment on Quadrant and Antutu thats pretty good considering the old Galaxy SIII mobile is more powerful than all the apple iphones and ipads to date. Samsung as shovelling some cash into this part of the market apple will have to do something special soon. Asus Transformer Prime is most powerful tablet at moment too on both.

iTunes is a right PITA but your photos can easily be synced to the iPad so having a card slot isn't really a necessity.

It's the apps that make a tablet so try to make your decision on that or maybe just get a netbook or similar if you just want some portability?

lol to get pics from your normal camera onto your ipad you need another device I think this was the point that having card slots being handier as you can just put it in and bingo on the move storing uploading editing sharing etc etc where ipad owner needs to carry a PC/MAC in their other pocket to achieve the same. It is a plus point to the Android devices but only because apple still refuses to allow its customers to expand the memory of their devices for £15 for 32GB class10 cards when they can get £100 off them for 16GB flash onboard it (that does really disappoint me tbh)

Apps choice etc as I see it all places making apps tend to make them for IOS and Android as they want to make more money offering it to more people there are hundreds of thousands of apps you would be hard pushed on an android device to not get an app either exactly the same or a different version to achieve same thing. Either way you can have access to more apps on the ipad but you cant install as many as you can on all its rivals.

Who cares, it's the third release in the series of iPad devices, ergo it's the iPad 3. You can't very well refer to a product as "the New iPad" since at some point, it's not going to be new anymore, I doubt Apple are just going to stop developing them...

I agree but either way thats what they decided to call it just like everyone was expecting the iPhone5 they called it the 4s lol

but then it'll just be old iPad and new iPad?

as for there being no real difference "in the real world", 2048x1536 vs. 1024x768 (double the ppi) isn't a noticeable difference?? the camera connection kit lets you transfer your photos without needing a computer

It is but why isnt it built in and having that hanging off the end of your ipad isn't an ideal solution I am sure there can't be one ipad customer who wouldn't welcome having card slot and USB as standard fitments to the device yet apple say none of them want or need it.....I guess they know best!

I'd love my ipad to make me a mean espresso but it doesn't. Is that Apple's fault too?

There wouldn't be a tablet market without the ipad, it must be doing something, no, A LOT right.

No need to be facetious. There is a difference in an ipad not having expandable memory so that instead of letting you have more storage you are forced to buy an ipad with more (limited) memory in first place at extortionate mark up for the 16/32gb extra compared to an ipad not being able to make you a coffee........If you read above I have said that it didn't meet "my" needs for these reasons and that it would be great if it had these things but ALL of the things it lacks that I like are things they use to make money out of their customers.......
