Ordered a set of M1155s from Camskill yesterday and immediately got an email to say delivery would be 6-8 weeks. Pardon?

I rang them up and was told that's the lead time, if anybody could get them any quicker they were most probably lying. There was a snide reference made to the honesty one particular West Yorkshire company who may or may not also trade on eBay but to be quite honest, it went right over my head and I still haven't worked out who they were or what he was on about.

I then rang a local factors today for availability and was told 6-8 weeks and they were made to order. Bummer. Tried to decide on another set, couldn't quite justify Carbotech XP8 or CL RC5+, didn't want DS2500 or EBC. I rang Motorsport World in Scotland who said they'd be with me on Friday and for not much more than Camskill charge. Hopefully all good.

Something from Germany? Or with German origin

  • Author

No it came from within this country. Well there might be a bit of German origin!

There were two of them....

It's not really anything new, but when my current set had been on my car, the top coat had developed lots of tiny cracks on both calipers which trapped the brake dust. It shouldn't really have happened and they looked pretty bad so these have come from Brake Caliper Refurbs, basically as a revised refurb job and I will be returning the ones on the car to BCR once I've fitted these up. It was kind of the reason for the rush in getting a new set of pads as the Pagid pads on the car are more or less worn out, I wanted to fit and forget for now rather than fit these calipers with old pads and have to do the job all over again.

Nice though, eh?!

Crap pic, but while I was unboxing them in the kitchen, I thought I'd stick one on the scales to see what it weighed:

That's less than 2.5kg combined with a stock disc that weighs just under 8 kilos. You put an R32 set up on the car and the weight rockets to a total 21kg (the stock caliper is 5.5kg). The weight difference between an R32 setup and the Porsche NQSBBK is nearly 11kg - EACH. I'm all for weight saving and, it was apparent as soon as I fitted a set of these in 2012, reducing that weight you've got hanging at the corners makes a real difference to steering, how the car rides into bumps and the overall feel of it, plus the braking difference is night and day.

I looked at these calipers earlier and had a feeling that I was going to have to grind down the pad retaining lugs, but I measured them earlier and the gap between them seems to be over 30mm - the disc thickness is 28mm IIRC, so they should go straight on (which will be nice). I suppose I ought to polish up the spring clip and the retaining bar before I fit them and I will have to remove the bleed nipples in order to fit the dust caps, but shouldn't be a big job. I'll feel happy again the brakes look nice and tidy and, because they won't be bled by an idiot, the brake fluid won't run down the front of the caliper and permanently mark the paint.

Mintex 1155s. God knows there this 6-8 week special order nonsense comes from, from order to my door in 36 hours.

Also came home to discover my number plates had been stolen. Notified the Police who will now have a marker on the car, I expect to be stopped a fair bit now just to confirm it's actually me and my car. Can do without that.

Bad news on the number plates!!!! That's rubbish. I hope the thieves are tracked down quickly.

Brakes look really good though :)

Rotten news John - probably nicked as they are different, hoping just kids p!ssing about, could do without the hassle of being checked very time you go out.

Will keep an eye out.

That's a ballache j0hn. I'll keep an eye out down here

Yeah they seem a bit better than the first set I had, hopefully the finish will last a bit longer.

Annoyingly I'm going to have to take the bleed nipples out of the calipers on the car so I can swap the dust caps over. I've seen the effect of muck, water and road grime on bleed nipples over 40k miles.

Coops/Barrie, it's either somebody who spotted the Czech dealer surrounds or, and I find this more likely, the plates are on another car that was earlier today filled up with petrol and driven away.

I think you should put the wrong return address on the old ones and put mine instead ;)

I'll stick a pic up of them later, they're in a pretty bad state

These turned up today:

I got them from Rainworth's eBay shop in the end for about £32 including 1st class post (standard post method is 2nd and is a bit cheaper).

I was going to order them from TPS and got given the trade price of £6.50odd over the counter but when I rang back to order them, I was told retail price applied, so I thought sod yer. There are genuine sets on eBay from £24 delivered from the UK, but you can't tell whether they are ULM or FOD versions, the latter supposedly fitting older wheels better.

They were going to be put into use on Monday, but on swapping the calipers over one of the caliper brackets broke in quite a big way, so I can't use the car as it doesn't have working brakes on the OSF. I was in a mood so I carefully put it all back together and left it alone. It needs a new caliper bracket, if I can get one, bleeding and bedding in. *Hopefully* I can get the bits to put it all back together on Tuesday.

In other news, I bought probably the worst quality set of number plates I've ever seen today. At least they're legal and only cost £12 - they'll do til I get another set of pressed plates next week.

As I was finishing up what I could do on the brakes, one of the neighbours came along the road and said he'd found my numberplates, bent in half, in his back garden a few days ago. I am almost certain they were on the car when I last drove it on Wednesday and I don't think they were taken until Thursday night. The Czech plate holders weren't found so I guess that's what the dirty thieving scumbag b'stard wanted. I don't think I'll bother with another set in case it causes this much headache again.

Brakes done yesterday, finally.

As I was tightening up the bolt on Saturday morning, the telltale 'crack' of a problem happening:

Fortunately, the maker responded pretty quickly to me asking if I could order another and said he would send me one. Unfortunately he also said he was out of the UK until sometime this week. I had two choices which were to take the car off the road or to try and get a replacement (temporary or otherwise). I knew that Creations Motorsport also sell the conversion brackets along with a set of bolts, the difference being that they are made out of hi-ten steel, and not aluminium, and they are not helicoiled but as they are hi-ten, I'm not sure they need to be helicoiled anyway. It's fortunate that Creations are only really down the road in Birmingham with a walk in shop as, if I'd had to wait for mail order, I would probably have sat it out and waited for the replacement to arrive in the post. I've only fitted one of the hi-ten brackets for now as I will probably swap it over to an alloy bracket when it turns up and may offer the hi-ten brackets for sale, adjusting the price as they're second hand, but at least I can use the car.

New calipers fitted up, excuse the dust. I'm pretty sure the previous set I had were lacquered over the decals but these look like the decal has either been applied over the lacquer or, worse still, have no lacquer at all!

With the brakes all done and bled through, I took the car out to bed the Mintex pads in. There was a fairly specific method to getting these bedded in and the first few big reductions in speed produced a LOT of smoke and the pedal nearly hit the floor with the force, so much so that I thought I hadn't bled the system properly but fortunately they seem pretty good so far. I haven't been out and stamped on them today but normal use yields good results.

If I thought I was having a bad weekend, I went over to South Leicester on Saturday morning before the brake incident and scanned a car for a guy off the mk5 forum. His car had been jump started following a flat battery and I think the battery was connected and the car immediately fired, rather than allowing the voltages to equalise, probably causing a voltage spike. VCDS could read almost none of the modules on the car, indicators didn't work, neither did main beam, HVAC, door lock modules, windows - virtually everything. The fan kicked in immediately and kept getting faster and faster until you thought it was going to spin itself off the car. The chap got it to a local specialist who confirmed that at least 9 modules were dead which pretty much writes off the car. Such a shame really and I guess a lesson to be learned when it comes to jump starting a car. I've never jump started mine I don't intend to and I won't be carrying a set of leads to provide the service to anybody else.

Gimme a shout when you decide what your doing pal, might add them to my to do pile lol.

I will let you know. Theoretically, all you would need is a set of 986 Boxster calipers, lines and these brackets.

I was amazed at how light my D2 calipers were, but I never got the chance to weigh them,  I reckon they were sub 2kg though. :)   or perhaps a little over.  Brembos look sexy though!

  • Author

You're probably right Jason, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to discover they were <2kg either. I cannot understand why folk spend the same money on a set of S3 front brakes that are getting on for 11kg heavier per side, other than scene points for having a bigger disc.
