How does nobody have any idea?!

Featured Replies

So about 2 months ago, I had to do the job of replacing the driver door inner skin as the window carrier mechanism had broken.

After fixing it, absolutely everything has been fine until today...

I am unable to get the window down at all. There is no electrical whir when i push the button.

However, there is an electrical whir when i press to bring the window upwards (although of course it is completely closed anyway)

this leads me to believe that a wire somewhere has popped out behind the door skin.

The passenger door can still be controlled from this door, the electric mirrors work fine etc so it must be a wire.

My question is, does anyone know which one it may be before I get to work?

From having the carrier on and off this door about 5 times whilst fixing the original fault, i am concerned about the following scenario:

i will take off the door trim, undo all bolts etc.

BUT i will not be able to gain access to the large black wire behind the door skin (connects up near the lock).

why?

because to take the door skin off, you need to free it from the glass.

so?

well to do that, you need to slide the window down half way to undo the two hex bolts. i cannot do this since the window will move.

this brings about this question: is it likely that the wire that is causing this fault IS the aforementioned large black one (that's an arse to get undone) up near the lock mechanism?

If it is that one, how am i going to get access to it?!

as an aside, I know some of you will say it only takes 10 secs but i really cba with unhooking the battery etc as it says in the haynes manual. seems a bit OTT.

all i will be unclipping is about 4 wires max. anyone done this job without unhooking the battery?

thanks in advance.

sorry to bump but does anyone have any ideas? I'd like to at least have some sort of knowledge before starting.

My main concern is not being able to move the window class at all thus cannot reach behind the inner door skin

ok so i have just taken everything apart. wiring is all good but the problem still occurs.

so next step is switch replacement. if that doesn't work, i'll be stumped :(

Replaced the switch today. still not working.

Please can someone give me some ideas?!

I suppose fuses will be next.

When I was having problems with my windows not working someone suggested the 25amp fuses, all three, in the fuse box at the end of the dash (drivers side) be replaced. This cured my problem, however, there was no motor noises at all from either of my window motors. So, logically that would seem to throw the fuse issue, in relation to your car, out.

Hope you get some help and get to the bottom of this problem soon mate.

Deleted horrible, unintentional pun . Sorry

thanks. Well, I'll be replacing the fuses on Tuesday or Wednesday when they arrive and i bloody hope it's that.

If not, i just don't get what it could be. I will have to take the whole door carrier etc off and trace back the wiring. but once i've traced it back as far as the door hinge, then what?! i assume it goes into a massive spiders web of wires behind the dash?

if no luck dude, let me know, i can pop over to you on wednesday and help you fix it if u want.

That's a kind offer, thanks. I'll do a bit more research first on the wiring for that switch as I don't want to waste your time with us not knowing what we're looking at!

ok so i had a look at the wiring diagram in the haynes manual. bearing in mind my actual wiring is slightly different because i only have front electric windows.

here is the electric windows diagram:

i have highlighted in orange where i believe the problem to be. i don't think it can be anywhere else but this tiny length of wire as otherwise, i would have other issues surely?

could somebody tell me what part 70 looks like please? it is referred to as "driver's door control unit". now is this the massive black thing that is screwed into the door skin OR is it just the small cream coloured block that plugs directly into the back of the switches that control the electric windows?

part 70 is the window motor itself i would show you a pic but i dont have one haha but i guess you know which bit is the window motor

That's a kind offer, thanks. I'll do a bit more research first on the wiring for that switch as I don't want to waste your time with us not knowing what we're looking at!

Ok Cool Let Me Know.
