I've found this with the Fabia seats. Only time I've felt bad was when I had back problems (remembering the pain I was in at Anglesey) and had to stop every hour or so for a walk. Generally though I find its my bladder making me stop on long journey's not discomfort from the seats.

I have found the seats in my Octy vRS to be very comfortable in normal driving conditions. Even on long distance trips of 5 hours or so I still get out of the car feeling fine.

The seats also seem to provide good support when on 'spirited' drives

I was not too impressed with the support from the seat on longer journeys when I first got the car. But, now that I have got the seat in a more upright position, as long as I put my backside in the right place they are Ok. Probably not quite as good as the seats were in my Rover 600 for long journeys but they look 10x better

Getting seat designs comfortable and ergonomically and anatomically right is a matter of pure design.

FWIW Doesn't a seat need adjusting according to journey and mood, not forgetting comfortable fit of clothes (collars, belts, waistbands etc which cause one to shuffle rather than sitting ergonomically for driving)?

On a long journey, the seat height/tilt and back can be adjusted to suit, after the initial stress of packing and getting underway has "calmed down" and one sits differently, and adjust again as road conditions (stress levels) change?

Passengers on long journeys have their seats/backs too far back IMO, thinking this is equivalent to relaxing, but more forward might be better so that feet in the footwell causes a slight knee-bend to help stabilise rolls and stress on the spine.

My 2 cents without medical foundation. Methinks a seat is rarely in the right place for a whole journey from one day to the next. Or have they just given us too many gadgets to play with :rolleyes:

Definately when talking about my Octavia's passenger seat. :)

The passanger seat on my Octy has the usaul adjustments as well as height and lumber adjustment. The amount of people that get in and say this seat is high/low or mention about too much lumber etc.

Give me a fully adjustable electric drivers seat with memory and sod the passengers. ;)

Cheers

There was no such problem with a rear engined Renault 1100 and that's several decades ago!!!. On a four hour drive the elderly passengers in the rear seat and myself driving with Mrs W/L in the front seat were all impressed with the comfort and had no aches or pains. Are we hitting the nail on the head here. If the seats are not correctly designed in the first place no amount of adjustment or fiddling is going to get the situation right. Maybe the money on buttons and electronics would be better spent on research!!!

We have sold both the Octavia and Fabia to acquire a Superb Elegance 2.5 TDI with Tiptronic transmission hoping to have one car that was both zippy comfortable and easy to drive.

The seating seemed very comfortable on our demo drives but alas for me the driving seat - despite all electronic combinations- is not comfortable after an hour of driving and causes back ache.

hmm similar experience hence the Chainging Chairs Q ... anybody.....

Personally I haven't had any real problems with the Octy RS seats and I do have back problems. Having said that, I really do think its a personal issue since:

(1) we all have different shapes - i.e. height, length of arms and legs, posture etc;

(2) we all adjust to what we are comfortable with which, in many cases, is not the "normal" posture. I always drive in the Italian, bunched up, legs around your armpits style having learnt my driving in old Alfas (which were consistently derided for poor driving position). I know its weird :D .... but im used to it and can't stand pushing the seat all the way back to where my legs actually only just reach the bottom of the pedal extension. My dad always puts the seat back on the same car after I have been driving it and he is 5 inches shorter than me :D

(3) we have too may options on seats in modern cars and many people fiddle around with controls without actively thinking about it and doing sustained testing as to whether a certain position is better than another. Too much choice often leads to the balls up solution with average punters :P .

Just my 2p worth :)

I've found I've started getting backaches since getting the VRS - it's something to do with the bolster at the front of the squab, I think, lifting my thighs off the squab itself. If I wind the lumbar support right up it's not quite as bad, but I agree with the poster who said it's not quite low enough. Ironically my old SLX never gave me these problems, despite having rock hard, slippery leather seats with less agressive side bolsters than the VRS. :thumbdwn:

Thanks GT TDI for your link...

Sorry I missed the thread "Changing Chairs". I did do a search on car seats and seating etc before starting this one but was obviously defeated by the title :)

Interesting that "Changing Chairs" parallels the experiences of some contributors here.

EditPS... No wonder I missed it ... it was started after this one :D

The higher range fabia model seats are very good. Especially the one with the 2.0 (Im sure it's the same as the vRS, different colours). However, my seat has started up on me. I'm 6'2" and weigh 100kilos, but I don't think my weight should be a valid reason for my seat to start losing it's supportiveness, not every guy weighs under 90 kilos...I'm gonna try and get it changed by the dealer, I'm sure it can be done under warranty. If not, I can go and get myself a pair of nice black & red Sparco seats for about GBP120.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just this evening I noticed that if I sit more upright (and thus further back) in the seat, there is something which sticks in my tailbone. I think it must be part of the heated seat assembly. Poor design! If you slouch, the seats are very comfortable and actually quite supportive. So you have to relax a little.

The Fabia VRS seats are easily the best i have sat in so far. They are just perfect for my height, with the lumbar support in exactly the right place :)

Shame they stain so easily :D

The driver's seat in my Comfort-spec Fabia is the best in any car I've had so far. Have done really long 7 hour journeys where I was in car nearly all the time (I did stop for a break but was still sitting in the same seat when I stopped). No sign of pain even after such a long trip.

My Rover driver's seat with electrically adjustable everything is far better for my dodgy back than our Fabia, but I'd expect it to as the car cost

But it's dead.

I find the Fabia vRS seats very comfortable, even for long pan-European drives. When i first got the car i didn't like the seat colour, now I've got used to it I find cars with the usual grey/black seats too somber and a bit depressing.

Can highly recommend the Mondeo seats ;) Lovely and supportive bolsters, heated leather, fully adjustable and electric :D

Chris

But it's dead.

A bit incontinent these days, but it's still alive :)

Just sold a Rover 75 2.5V6 Auto.

The seats were complete luxury for a couple of hours but spend longer in them and you started to get a few aches as they didn't offer as much support, a little too soft.

The Motorsport Recaro's in my Prodrive Series McRae Impreza were the opposite. Jump in and they were hard and uncompromising but you could sit in them all day without an ache or pain.

Cheers

Lee

I voted my Octavia seat as comfortable, I spend on average 5 hours a day in it and there is no backache or anything like that so its a general  from me

  • 1 month later...

I voted excellent for fabia... my comparison is my new ford focus, this is like sitting on jelly.... no support at all, the fabia is much better......

didn't vote, but the standard passenger seat in bengie's octy elegance are comfy enough on a long or short trip but offers next to no lateral(?) support, which you really need when he's driving in anything other than granny mode...which is a lot of the time
