DSG rattle

Featured Replies

Probably

Or have the window down to hear it? Its not something you'd notice with the radio on and windows up. I must notice knocks and rattles more having come from tuned cars where you notice every noise that's not normal :)

Oh i notice noisy or noises that should not be there and faulty vehicles making strange sounds as well, then fix them!

Never been inclined into this 'they all do that!', or even they ''need to do that!',

I like my 'Tuned' vehicles to sound sweet, not to rattle.

EDIT PS 'Road test report'

Just been out for a drive in my usual Sunday morning mode, lugs clear, radio off & windows open.

A bit of tyre roar, discs grind for the first application of,

and too many keys on the ring clinking so need to deal with that, (not a warranty issue i dont think!.)

Just my luck that i bought a 'faulty car' with no DSG rattle or clink or noise or mis-shifts or anything.

Runs smooth in 2nd and is quickly up to 3rd and on when cold and when hot after a thrash.

If when i had looked at buying a used car i had known it was a feature of all vRS DSG for them all to be noisy i would have looked harder for one like that.

Ah well, maybe the Exhaust or Cat, Heat Shield or something else will start to rattle at some point.

That will give me something to source the cause of and make quiet.

ive heard this today and got quite concerned, I have it when im rolling in gear below 2000RPM, its like the clutch plate is grinding but when I have my foot on the break fully (at a stand still) its fine. ive heard it only once when im stopped. is it really normal? ive just noticed it because the wethers nice and I have my window down. it doesn't help that  only a couple days ago I had the silencer taken off the car. so I thought it might have something to do with that

Check with Skoda & see if your car is needing work with the current 'Service Campaign' on the DSG,  Oil changed to Mineral Oil from Synthetic

& an ECU Update,

A good chance for them to see your Mechatronics Control Unit & Clutch packs are OK.

Best sort your exhaust out first and see its not rattling.

Dont reckon the recall will help George. Its made my 'rattle' more pronounced. I dont know if its just me noticing it. Or if because of software update. It might be me but it kind of feels like the gearbox is trying to learn to my driving style again. Would it have 'reset' itself when messed about with for the recall/whatever it is called today. Would they have looked at my clutch packs George? Baring in mind that it was in for a major service at the same time as gearbox oil change etc. I think sometimes it feels as though the clutch is slipping. Doesnt do it all the time at all but enough to make me notice and swmbo to complain about me not being able to drive. Then realising its an auto and asking whats wrong.

Yeah I shall do it in the morning.

Can someone, or preferably several people, do an experiment, please?

Stop on a quiet road. Wind your windows down. Start moving in "D" until you are in 2nd. Slow down until you are barely moving but still in 2nd gear. Then give the car about half throttle. What sound do you hear from the gearbox?

I won't say what I hear until I have an answer or two so that my finding doesn't colour your response.

Not sure if it's the same noise you've heard but had a right old bang yesterday - took off normally (D1-D2) for a short distance, slowed down to a crawl (D2, changing down to D1), pressed throttle midway-ish to pull out onto the main road and got a right old noise as it took off in D1.

If you went from crawling/slowing in D2 (1st gear would be pre-selected as it would be assuming a stop) and then taking off, it would have to quickly change the second (first?) gearset from 1st to 3rd ready for the speeding up but if it was about to change DOWN into 1st, then it would have to disengage the 1/3/5/7 gearset, then do the change.  If it the gearset was still churning round, it might have not been too happy at changing from 1st to 3rd that quick?

Not a bang, but what sounded like a few marbles rattling in a tin. I've since heard it's something to do with the 3rd gear "fork", though as I'm not overly mechanically minded I'm not sure if that's the true answer. The only thing I can add is that the car seemed to accelerate as per normal, and didn't shudder or make a bang.

Can't say if it is the exact same noise but I've been hearing similar things since the very beginning and I think it was deemed "normal" from Skoda for a DSG to sound like that so, given that everything else felt normal I have let it be. If one could record it we could be more sure we are talking about the same thing or not but it's a bit difficult to catch on a crappy phone's mic while driving...

I've heard that rattle but did think it's the same as a heatshield..  IIRC the gearboxes have quite a lightweight grade oil such that any noise won't be damped out like in older gearboxes.

I can get a "single shot" noise like a marble in a can if sat next to a wall with the window open (i.e. in a Drive-Through) and (because I was bored) keep flicking the lever between D and N with the brake on - you can hear a similar noise..just.

Hi Guys, long time no see around here :).

I am glad the community is going on strong!

I did notice the noise and can replicate it very reliably.

At slow speed (2nd-3rd gear) below 30mph find a road which has "joints"/faults running perpendicular to your travel direction across the width of the road. So both wheels "jump up" at the same time.

Alternatively put front on axle stands and move the front wheels by hand - impossible to miss if it's there even in gear selector in "P" position.

My guess is gearbox, diff or half axles joints. Can't be bothered with investigating any further as it works perfectly fine :)

DON'T FIX IT IF IT AIN'T BROKEN ;)

If you look hard enough you can ALWAYS find something wrong - ask any GP ;)
