Which oil for a service?

Featured Replies

Afternoon all

I've been approached by a mate with a Octavia 1.9 TDi (DSG gearbox)

He has been quoted a massive amount just for an oil change, due to "the only oil you can use in these mate is fully synthetic 5W 30 grade" at around £70 / gallon.

Is this true or can you put 'normal' 5W 30 in it? Does the DSG have anything to do with it having to be a specific grade?

Any guidance greatly appreciated as ever!

Its nothing to do with the DSG 'box but if I recall correctly and if the car has been set for the extended service interval then fully synthetic is required.

If this is the case the oil cost over time should be no more - - twice the mileage between services but oil at twice the cost.

You can buy full synthetic oil much cheaper than that with the VW approval code VW507.00 ? on it. Last lot I got was £20 for 5l Pennsoil. Also bought Havoline ~£7 per l a couple of years back. I use mine for between service top ups.

its not the DSG its the DPF in the exhaust which requires the correct oil otherwise it will clog up with excess carbon. VAG state that a car with DPF requires 507.01 oil regardless of service regime.

The DSG oil is separate from the main engine oil, and it has a service interval replacement of every 40K miles, should this not be done then permanent damage can be done to the transmission. DSG oil replacement requires the use of special tools and for the box to be at exactly the right temperature.

As far as I am aware the 1.9 TDi fitted to the Octavia does not have a DPF (diesel particulate filter) so as a result the higher spec and more expensive VW 507.00 long life oil is not neccessary - unless of course the car is set to variable servicing.

If it's on fixed servicing (every 10,000 miles or 1 year - whichever is reached first) then the less expensive VW 505.00 oil can be used...

Opie have a 20% off oil at the moment too. Used it earlier to buy some new gearbox oil.
