Octavia RS Unbalance due to spacers?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys/Girls,

I just fitted H&R lowering springs (50mm) on my RS-07. Sticking to the original suspension.

I also fitted spacers. 10mm front and 15mm rear.

I went to a local tier shop and got a 4-wheel adjustment done.

But the car is horrible to drive, expecially at high speed.

It feels like the car skids over the white painted road marks or any cavities in the ground.

This feeling only appear when I cross the rough patches and lines in the road slightly parrallel. No bad feeling when driving stright.

Anyone have any idea what the problem it can be?

Perhaps a poor adjustment by the tire shop?

Thanks!

Dodgy spacers would create vibrations at certain speeds. Sounds more like a misalignment.

I'd try it without the spacers first. If that's no better then get the alignment re-checked at another shop.

If its still no better then maybe check the dampers? Could be the OE dampers are on their way out and the lower ride height shows this up more than the original springs? Look at maybe getting some dampers matched to the springs..?

I bet it they have aligned the wheels but not adjusted the toe in/out as I would imagine that would need adjusting possibly.

What wheels and tires are you running? I found in the past that on some vehicle/suspension combinations V grooved pattern tires like a slightly different setting to asymmetric ones. I run a fraction more toe out on the MX5 at the moment, but still within spec. I loose a little bit of cornering sharpness, but gain more straight-line stability that way.

I'm running Pirelli P Zero 225/40 ZR18 on original rims.

The rear tires are slightly worn down, but I dont think that would affect this problem that much?

I will visit the shop again and try to get the alignment re-checked, then insist on them checking the toe as well.

I have notice that its the rear that have the feeling of beeing sllippery.

If nothing of this works. I will try to detach the spacers. But I can remember the car beeing a bit "slippery" and behaved llike a worm on the road at accelerations when I changed to summer tiers in April, and that was before the lowering with H&R springs.

Thanks for all replys to my post. Much appreciated!

You say you noticed it being a bit slippery and behaving like a worm before you altered anything? I'll be honest, anything that was a problem before you altered the ride height and fitted spacers, is likely to have been made more noticeable by these changes. I'm not a big fan of Pirellis. In the MX5 world they are often talked about as "ditch finders"!

I'd be looking for new tires anyway based on what you have said. there are loads of threads on here about what works well for Octys.

Personally i'm always cautious about matching the right tire to the right car. As and example, in the past i put a full set of Bridgestone Potenza PPS03's on a Bora 150TDI Sport, as they were standard spec on a Boxter i thought they should be fine. They had so much grip the car tram lined and squirmed no mater how the geometry was set up. In effect i'd given the car too much grip! Returning to Bridgstone RE040's the handling & directional stability was restored, but a bit of the lateral grip was lost. It's all a compromise!

On my Octy vRS i liked Toyo T1R's as a cost/performance compromise, but when I could afford it I ran Michelin Pilot Sports, and IMHO they really suited the car as I had it set up.

Good luck & HTH

Ok, I know it been a while since I posted this thread. But finally I got the problem solved.

The main issue was the rear wishbone (track control arm) and the rear tie rod. I guess the bushings were shot. After replacing them myself, the car is back to normal...or even better! I purchased original used ones (110km only!) at a really good price. Not knowing if aftermarket stuff is good enough.

I also changed the front wishbones when I got the whole set at a really good price.

After changing to new Michelin Pilot Sport 3, I did a 4-wheel alignment and now all things are as they should. No more worming!

Great to hear the car problem is fixed.

However, you now appear to have a font size problem?

:giggle:

Glad to know you got it sorted.

 +1 for the PS3's
