Fave car you've owned?

Hey all,

I was just interested to hear what people's favourite car is, that they've owned?

So you have to have owned the car - this isn't a 'fantasy car' thread. it's to tell us your favourite car that you've owned

Well, I bought my first car on 31st Dec 1989, aged 17, (a Morris Ital 1.3HL - NOT my fave car!!)....and in the subsequent 23 years I have owned a total of 57 cars (I am sad and keep them on a spreadsheet ;)). They've ranged from an Austin Mini 1000 that had a 'cling film' rear windscreen that I had to renew every other day before going to work (bought it like that), to a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo that was amazing but ultimately went 'pop'.

All things considered (including value, reliability, performance - everything taken into account), I think my favourite car has been a 1999 (T) BMW 523i SE Steptronic that I owned for 9 months in 2009. Paid £1600, came with 90k, FSH, unmarked inside and out, drove like a brand new car, so refined and couldn't hear the engine when it was on. Not a speed machine but more than adequate. Just utterly faultless in every respect. Sold 9 months later for £1600 so cost absolutely nothing for 9 months very happy, comfortable motoring.

I've owned a lot newer, lot faster, lot more expensive cars, but the 523i is - all things considered - my all time fave. :)

.....and you?

Rather predictably I'm going to say my Furby I vRS. I've been driving over 5 years and I have had only 3 cars in that time, the Furby being the first decent one and hence my favourite. First was a 1997 MkI Renault Clio 1.2: £500, 60 bhp, engine was solid, everything else was made of spit and kleenex, and there was no equipment. Rolled like a battle ship, understeered like a derailed train and ate wheel bearings for breakfast. Second was a 1998 MkIV Ford Fiesta 1.4: £950, 90 bhp, sounded decent, drove nice but was tail happy (I spun it!) and had precious little equipment. Oh and it only got 35 mpg (in petrol and oil) and it started rotting on me.

Out of all my Dad's motors I can recall, MkI BMW 120d SE facelift was my favourite. Questionable looks, run-flat tyres and lack of useful interior storage aside, a very sorted car. Superbly built, rapid (177 bhp), economical (regularly returned 55 mpg), reliable, fun to drive, well equipped, comfortable (though a slightly firm ride), good cruiser. And no stupid iDrive.

In 1981 I bought a red second hand 1978 Toyota Corolla, after having a couple of clapped out European cars it was terrific- no rust, no water leaks, didnt break down. As far as I recall it had an 1100cc engine, four speed gearbox and acceleration you could measure with a calendar, probably did about 27-30mpg (with petrol at 75p per Gallon), probably put out enough CO to kill a planet, but I thought it ws really cool.

After a succession of Japanese cars I think my current Superb is a better all round proposition now and is probably up there in my top couple of cars

Gone but not forgotten: -

Octavia vRS TDI CR 2010

Fabia vRS 1.4 TSI 2010

Had the Octavia for a year and decided to sell it to pay the loan off and reduce outgoings

Had the Fabia for 3 months but it drank oil like a fish and had lots of pressure to get rid, so I did.

Now in my 2006 Diesel Octavia and while it is a solid and faithful car, I am bored of driving diesel (only do 7K per annum now) and bored of Octavias in their current form (had 3 mk2's and a mk1)

Want a Scirocco next as practicality is not so much a concern for me.

I had a BMW Alpina B3 3.3 that was one of the most sorted cars I've ever had. Just really good at getting you from A to B as effortlessly as possible. Comfortable yet handled really well; went when you put your foot down, but still managed 30 to the gallon while I owned it. Running costs were too high though. Tyres alone were a lot, and because it was an Alpina, any specialist parts that weren't from the BMW parts bin were going to be extremely expensive. Oh, and unfortunately Alpinas depreciate like a brick dropped off a cliff.

Second favourite, and the best really from a practical and running cost point of view is the Fabia. I've had a Lexus IS200 from new, which was nice enough, but lacked power, and the interior was a bit of a mish-mash.

On my list of cars to get is a V8 of some description, probably an S4 Avant, and I really really really really want an Alfa GTV V6. Not as a daily driver though, obviously!

definatley my lancia thema turbo. 1986 © reg, it actually had ABS that was almost unheard of at the time..... best thing though was that engine, the 2 litre twin cam counterbalanced turbo from the intergrale (220bhp)

it was about the fastest saloon on the road at the time! (and still the car I have driven faster than anything else... my mark II fabia wont even go that quick! :o)

1st gear would do 47 mph! yet it looked like a boggo sierra saphire :) loved it. still regret selling it to this day!

Best car is probably the current octy but the car I remember most fondly is my first car. My Astra 1.3 Merit 3dr. Awful car if reliable but it was my first car and I was 19 when I had it so lots of good memories.

I'm split between three!!

1. My 3rd Land Rover. A 90 'CSW', with the 134 BHP V8. A genuine factory build V8, not one that a previous owner had installed.

It sounded great, & had the ability to scare the heck out of B*W drivers :giggle:

2. My 5th Land Rover. A 110 'CSW', this time it was a Td5, & was the 'Heritage' edition.

From being a little kid, I'd wanted what was commonly referred to as a 'Safari', it took me 4 other Landies & until I was turned 40 to own one, but I did!

Green leather seats, & white dials!! (

3. Our Jaguar XKR. when SWMBO went looking for a car, I expected her telling me she'd bought a Mondeo (to replace her company car, of the time; they finished the scheme for some reason)

In Wakefield, Ford & Jaguar are next door to each other, & she spotted a car that 'awaiting preparation'

She spoke with the salesman, had a test-drive........ I got a phonecall at work to tell me she'd paid a deposit on a car

On hearing which one, a small detail had to be checked........ "What did the badge say??, or has it got louvres on the bonnet??"

"Yes, & XKR"

Two inclusions for me:

- My old 2.8i V6 Capri of the late 80's. Loved that long swept bonnet stretching in front of you & of course the angry growl of the V6.

- Believe it or not my old Fun, now approaching the 4th anniversary of ownership. It's just like nothing I've owned really whilst accepting you probably either love or hate them. Luckily I'm the former

My favourite cars are my two current cars. My Skoda octavia mk2 is my best daily by far out of all the other French unreliable skips I've owned. Very comfortable and cheap to run with a lot of gadgets and my favourite fun very fast car is my skyline 400hp of RWD fun. Handles and accelerates like a dream just not very practical or cheap what so ever to run hence why I have my octy

Was expecting it to be the Felly Daisy ;)

As much as I love my Felly  , sexy isn't the first word that springs to mind, and the civic did have over 100hp, and a sunroof, leccy windows, air con, power steering, central locking......................................

This is already running :)http://www.briskoda....d-not-have-sold

Well I get "Sorry that thread could not be found", (maybe it's a FREEDOM only thread?) so thank god I started this new thread ...... ;)

Not only that but cars leave us for other reasons too, not just "get sold".

Anyway, it's always an easy choice:

I had a Sierra Ghia Estate 2.0 (RWD). Loved it (even without PAS). Held the road like a bar of soap. Buckets and buckets of fun. (No ABS, no traction control. :) ) Was bought to do a specific job for 6 months, which it did admirably. Scrapped.

(Was way more fun than the Morris Marina in the wet)

Also had a Focus Ghia 2.0. 140mph from a bog standard family hatchback. Left quite a few boy-racers and their Corsas/Saxos behind. Company car: handed back when left company. (although I have had 3 Focus' since, none have been anywhere near as much fun)

I still have the Fun Truck sitting on the driveway. For pure novelty value and fun I've had, it will be a sad day when it goes.

.......so to pick one would be almost impossible.

Not best my any means my my first car will always be on I have fond memories of. It was a bog standard Mk3 Astra 1.4 I had off my dad when he bought an Octy and while technically rubbish it taught me loads about driving and carrying speed through corners. It did things in that car I'd never be stupid enough to do again but taught me a lot. I've often said I could go through certain sections quicker in the Astra than I could in even my current vRS

Best probably has to be my current vRS but I don't think I'll have the same feelings about it than I did the Astra. Your first car I think is always special whatever it is.

My old 2.8i V6 Capri of the late 80's. Loved that long swept bonnet stretching in front of you & of course the angry growl of the V6.

It was a similar driving view for us in the XKR, a long bonnet with a powerbulge.

When it was in 'Sport' mode & kickdown was 'prodded', it went like buggery for overtaking!!!! ('booked' at about 4.7 seconds 30-70MPH!!!!)

Sadly it sounded too refined, but then again it was a Jaguar, the supercharger whine overcame the V8 growl in the midrange

Mine has to be my family's old '98 1.5td Corsa (of all things!)

Was bought when it was 6 months old until the engine seized Xmas last year on me, replaced with my vRS (which is a close 2nd, but only cos I haven't owned it as long!)

In the following years the only issues have been altanator, sump, water pump, which were durimg my ownership (typical!) all fixed by me and only cost me £200 to insure and £120 tax a year and 420 miles of out £45 worth of fuel.... Very cheap ownership!
