Advantages of a remap vs tuning box

Featured Replies

Ooooo never knew that

Thast what i was informed by two different tuners(Shark and APR) anyway.

This is all very interesting, haven't had mine removed yet but I'm seriously considering it. I barely use the car really anyway. Mon-Fri it's kept in a garage, i take it out mainly at weekends but don't go very far. Possibly could be a waste of money it just sitting there (the map not the car)

But in Sy's case it's irrelevant that the dealer can see the map or not, they aren't going to miss the bigger turbo under the bonnet or intercooler or other mods. But Sy knows this and isn't bothered about warranty.

The only thing that may be a problem is, as has already been said, Skoda do look at this forum. When the inevitable day comes and Sy sells his vRS, he's already said he's putting it back to standard. The person who buys that car either won't know what's happened to it previously or Skoda will. Would the buyer take it in for warranty work and then get the shock that the previous owner had extensively modified the car so warranty is now out the window?

Sorry for further dragging this off topic. As remap vs box is concerned, judging by reviews the box is pretty good. It's obviously not as fine tuned as a specific map but pretty good and installed in minutes. As Sy knows from various disagreements with different tuners they all map differently, some are more aggressive, some have different tolerances they work to, etc. All I'd advise is to do plenty of your own research and don't take one person's word for it. After all they don't pick up the bill if it goes wrong

Only if you have been mapped by the OBDII port. Bench flashing doesnt cause a flash count change.

Thats where i heard it from, thanks vRSy

Essentially you dont want a remap, and are trying to put other people off.

The only thing i do agree is people need to take responsibility for any problem it causes. You have to be willing to put any required supporting modifications. I certainly am and wouldnt do it if i wasnt happy doing it.

No, quite the opposite. I remap and tune my own vehicles. That's why I have a lot of respect for the process and the problems it can cause.

For example, there is something missing in the thought process that a lower power engine (say a 103kw 2.0tdi) can be cranked up past the power/torque level of the higher power version (the 125kw 2.0tdi) with no supporting modifications. Yet I can buy a remap that does exactly this.

VAG engineers didn't put a different and bigger turbo on the 125 because they got a good deal on ebay.

In your list of engines above, you claim the same turbos are used. But the models you've listed (e.g. K04) are turbo families and within each family are a huge range of both wheel sizes and wheel trims. It takes a lot of hands-on time to nail down these differences.

Turbo maps are all well and good when they are available. A massive number of OEM turbos do not have maps available to the general public. Like the entire garrett VNT range.

What is the max safe boost on a GT1752V?

Ask a dozen different tuners and get a dozen different answers. Some may even ask you to define "safe". What is the level of risk you are happy with?
