Mufflerectomy OR Non silenced cat back?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Going to have my exhaust done soon and want opinions whether I'd e better off going for a Mufflerectomy or a non-silenced cat back?

Both would be 2.5 inch bore. Would there be any sound difference?

Just don't see the point in spending the extra money on getting the rest of the exhaust made up if I dont have to. It will be a custom place by the way so anything is possible.

Any other ideas?

Mufflerectomy buddy! I got mine done in Mike Stokes in Bornemouth. £100 for backbox removal, replaced with a 2.5 inch pipe, and a tip of my choice. They even made two sleves, one for the straight pipe, and one for my standard exhaust, so I can swap them at any time.

Sound wise, its quiet, no sorry, stock levels of noise whilst cruising, a little burble when accelerating (you wouldn't hear with music on) and when you burry your foot it becomes a nice deep roar. I'm lucky to have the pigeon noise that some love, and some hate.

If your near Southampton / Portsmouth area i can take you for a spin if you'd like?

Just to let you know, I've got power flow tip RAiUT

I didn't really want to fork out for a Milltek cat back, a lad has one local and his doesn't sound much different from standard. I heard a full Milltek and that was nice though!

If I lived in Southampton I'd snap your hand off Mike - sadly I'm from North Wales. I think a Mufflerectomy is more my kind of thing and that sounds like a good price for the work too! There's a bloke I visit in Angelsey, he's pretty cheap!

Failing the Mufflerectomy I could always go for the Piper non silenced cat back for less than £200

where have you found a piper cat back for less than £200? Cheapest I found was £210 posted. I have a mufflerectomy and it sounds great but im going full piper turbo back as im getting a decat down pipe for cheap and want a full system.

Mufflerectomy, then choose the tip of your choice. Milltek make turd looking tail pipes but thats just my opinion of course

Joe - you can get them on Rude racing, I think they are about £194 posted! That's the non silenced one. If you buy the silenced one then I have the Piper pipe which replaces the silencer so you could swap and change if you liked :)

Lee - I don't like the Milltek tail pipes either tbh. Think I'll just get a Mufflerectomy then - cheap and cheerful!

Mine would be RIT

Random but does anyone know if I need spring compressors to get the rear springs out when I'm fitting coilovers?

dan when you come and met me mine has a full miltek, definatly worth the money and i bought mine from awesomes open day last year for just over £400. its worth it!

I liked your system, but I just don't want to spend that sort of money yet :(

For that kind of price I could re-map it aswell ;)

When you undo the damper the axle will drop and in theory the springs should fall off.

Do you hear the pigeon noise when changing gear with a Mufflerectomy?

How are the standard down pipes in terms of restrictions? My mate just mentioned to me why don't I have the standard cat turned into a quick removal one. Hmmmm

That's the same sort of thing I'm thinking of get another cat cut the top open remove everything and replace a pipe inside. Put the top back on and fit. And that is a decat pipe that looks like a cat to a traffic cop if ever I got stopped. And then at mot time swap over to the proper cat so it sails through.

I just had a complete powerflow system done - had the chance of a mufflerectomy too, but went with a non-silenced can. Still pretty gruff a note. but not too loud

That idea about the fake cat is a good one but I'm sure you could get something like that made up rather than going to th expense and then just cutting it all out.

It won't be too bad. But I do like a project rather than buying something pre made.

I'm just going to get a Mufflerectomy and see how that sounds. Normally if I want any other work doing he will do it for me there and then anyway :)

just checked and they are 211.60 before posting :S

excuse my ignorance but what is a Mufflerectomy?!

its when you remove the back box and replace it with just a pipe. search here, google and youtube and there's lots of stuff about it. basically its a cheap way of getting a sportier/louder exhaust.

Sounds alright Lee, sounds similar to the exhaust I ha on my Focus TDCI.

I can't decide what I want! Whether to go for a full system. Not sure I can be arsed with the hassle of cat at MOT time. And would a decat make the back of the car sooty all the time??
