MDI settings tied to individual ignition key?

Featured Replies

I hope I have the correct acronym - I've just been browsing through the owners manual looking for an answer to my question (unsuccessfully, hence here), and noticed such acronyms as MFD, MDI, MFA ... so my apologies if I have the wrong one.

Basically, I'm talking about the 'Lights & Vision' section of the 'Settings' section in the Maxi Dot display (Maxi Dot display = MDI?).

This is where I went shortly after picking up my Yeti to turn off the DRL's and the annoying automatic 3 flashes every time you flick the indicator.

Given the Yeti is my car, all has been fine with this for as long as I've been driving it. Occasionally, however, my wife would drive it and at some point afterwards say "Didn't you turn off that annoying three blinks thing with the indicator?" "Yes" I would reply, assuming she was perhaps using it incorrectly or something.

Yesterday, she picked me up from work after I forgot to take my bike lights and worked till after the sun had set. "It's doing the thing with the 3 flashes again" she says. "Really?" I got in, turned on the car, flicked the indicator - 1 flash. She was most frustrated, which I took advantage of, questioning her sanity etc.

After getting home I began wondering how on earth the car might be able to tell which one of us was driving. Perhaps it recognised my phone was connected, and the settings I changed were somehow tied to that memory? I dismissed this almost immediately because it's ...well ... stupid (I was tired).

This morning she dropped me at the train. "Oh ... let me try this!" she said, flicking the indicator once. 3 flashes.

It suddenly dawned on me that I had forgotten we have 2 sets of keys. Yesterday even though she picked me up, and I drove home, I just pulled my keys out of my pocket rather than use the ones she brought in.

So ... anyone else experienced this?

Ours seems to be the same - I get the normal response with my key, but when my wife uses hers, she gets the 3 flashes and if I remember correctly, a beep as well! It's a feature!

Maxidot = MFD (Multi function display)

And yes, functions are key specific, so each key has to be programmed to do things. In my case, my key locks the doors at 5mph, but as Sheila doesn't like it, her's doesn't.

Every day is a school day! I didnt know that, potentially a very useful feature. :)

Which has also remined me I must turn the DRL's back on with Sheila's key!

bloody hell, this is going to make life interesting.

The biggest thing I hate about her 320d is the stupid way the indicators work, press gently for some flashes, press gently again in same direction to cancel etc etc. On the odd occasion I get to drive her car I always end up giving stupid indication because I try to cancel by clicking in the other direction. Which of course indicates changing direction on the other side...

Oh my gawd, this is like when Clarkson said on Top Gear " I just want a mobile phone to make calls " Well I just want a key that starts the bloody car, not remembers who is driving it!!!!!

Tough Anzio, you'll just have to accept that your Yeti can think for itself!! :giggle:

No MAXIDOT - No key specific settings ?!

Having DRLs off (set using the "everiday" key) and tested with the second (not in use) key - DRLs don't come on.

Interesting if driver's electric seat settings / mirrors setings (on some models) are also key specific - as I was told - applies for Audi A8

Yes they are, so I presume that cars so equipped also have Maxidot.

The BMW system works well IMHO - I had a 130i for 3 years and quickly got used to it. You can cancel the indicators by 'tapping' the indicators in either direction, but it has to be a 'tap' to the first point of resistance, and not a full 'push', through the resistance point to the full travel of the stalk. The BMW also does key-dependent setting changes, like the Yeti does. It used to drive me mad when I borrowed my wife's key and the a/c wasn't set how I like it! I have set my wife's Yeti key to match my preferences (not sure she even knows this!).

Tap hard. Tap gentle. Full push. Half push .....

I just want an old fashioned 'while indicator lever is held on, indicator light flashes' - hence why I turned my 3-flash setting off. I too found it annoying when I'd go to change lanes, then the impatient 'P' plater behind me would zoom out to overtake, meaning I would want to stop my 3 indicator flashes after 1 flash. I tried varying amounts of force to turn them off, all of which would result in 3 flashes in the other direction (or no action and the other 2 flashes happening).

Anyway ... thanks for the responses. Now my brain is trying to figure out how it knows the difference in the keys - they look identical to me (in terms of the grooves). So I can only assume it has a similar setup to a MIL key/card swipe like used in most office entries these days, or if it's decided by the door unlock/lock remote activation signal (in which case the key used to start the car matters not).

P.S. What are MDI & MFA acronyms/abbreviations for?

It tells the difference from the different codes the transponder inside sends to the ECU.

Haven't worked out those acronyms yet!

Ok, read above, a question, where, how do I cancel the auto door locking setting, can't find it in the h/book although must admit haven't looked seriously for it,

The car didn't do this as supplied, but after replacement of the cabin heating system thermostat which presumably caused the reset when, I assume the battery was disconnected!

Graham just noticed your car's reg, I assume a Furrows beast?

Salut a Brest / Dz en fete(its the 2 week maritime festival, and yes, its p*ssing down)!!

Quick reply... It is somewhere in the MDF Settings. Must be stationary to activate/deactivate the automatic door locking.

Salut Tony.

As Freedie says it is in the Maxidot settings, but I'm stuck in the 'box so can't go and look.

And actually it was the ex-demo from Faintree Motors, but has since been to Furrows in Oswestry.

Glad to see you're getting the wetting as well!!

DU Shropshire then - mines also DU but it came via a Skoda dealer auction, thro' the Skoda outlet at Powick!

My mum's halfway thro building an Arc although can't see the point as she's near Clows top - about 200++ mtrs above sea level!

Salut!!

I wanted a C for Cymru, but hey-hoo.

Just got the Handbook out of the car, and it looks like it comes under the COMFORT section, under door opening.

p28!

Hey ho, here we go (again)

Think there must have been a manual upgrade in 2010, mines dated 05.10

P 28 is a pic of the dash warning lights - I still cannot find the Comfort zone, no matter, over the weekend I'll have a proper go at sorting the MFD area!!

Thanks for the attempt Graham!!

Bon weekend!!

Try using the word "Convenience" instead of "Comfort" (?)

Mr Stupid here!!!

Ok spent some time trying to correct my auto door locking situation, and, eventually cracked it but with no end of frustration.

Looked at the MFD, found the section, reprog'd worked fine the first time, stopped car switched off started returned home back to auto lock sit'n.

Tried again same , eventually reprog'd and then removed key, left it for 10 mins tried again and as the locals would say 'et voila, ca marche'

Maybe my vehicle has a brain problem(like me) don't know but it seems a strange method, but hey ho it works!!

Now I'm about to dig a big hole in the corner and hide there!

salut a la sunny but breezy finistere!

Thanks - Have just been wondering why the auto-door locking doesnt always work , now know I have to go through the settings options for both keys.

I have only ever used one key and don't even know if the spare works so I will give it a try.

But I as I read it thought it was just for the electric seat memory.

I didn't have any of this stuff on my owd Renault but one consolation was the key batteries are still working after 13 years and the rest if is biodegrading (fast)

P.S. What are MDI & MFA acronyms/abbreviations for?

MDI = media device interface - the VAG term for a socket to plug in a media player. Acronym not explained anywhere in the manual, though the socket's function is explained.

MFA = multi-function adapter - the old VAG term for the MFD (multi-functional display). Should have been edited out of the handbook; in the 2010 UK handbook they left two instances; in the 2011 handbook they got it down to one.
