Mk1 or Mk2?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a second Skoda to add to my Fabia, Budget of IRO £4k and would ideally like a diesel Octavia.

I have found a couple that look interesting. My query is to whether the Mk2 is worth the extra £, we have a 2 year old child and am thinking of maybe another in the next year so space is a priority.

The two that have initially caught my eye are:

1) 2004 Mk1 Octavia 1.9 tdi Elegance Hatch FSH 86k miles at £2,600

2) 2005 Mk2 Octavia 1.9 tdi Ambiente Hatch FSH 85k miles at £4,000

Do people think that Mk2 is worth the extra £1.4k?

Cheers :)

I know nothing about the diesel models but having had a Mk1 vRS and gone to a Mk2 vRS i can say the MK2 is mre comfortable. The boot is about the same size as the Mk1

I owned a mark1 Octavia Ambiente tdi for 10 years, brilliant reliable and economical. Broke down at 96k with gearbox/differential failure - almost unheard of in Octavia's- and got rid of to buy a 56 reg Octavia Elegance with 66k on clock from Skoda main dealer. Regret this purchase. Too many fancy gizmos eg rain sensing wipers, dual climate control. Had clutch master cylinder replaced, mirror glass fell of drivers door, new aerial base, dual mass flywheel vibrations. I would go for another Mk1, especially one with the 110bhp engine.

Ask a cab driver which is best, most of the time it will be the Mk1 lol

Mk2 for me, better build quality makes it feel much nicer. My mk1 rattled like a mo-fo and the interior was naff and very plasticy

I'm weird, I find the octy 2 interior horrible compared to my mk1 plus my mk1 doesn't rattle even with 138k on it

Mk2 for me. Mine was a December 2004, 76k miles, TDI (140) Elegance, 17" Pegasus wheels, Black leather throughout, timing belt just changed, £4.2k. This was 2 years ago, private seller.

Having had a mk1 & mk2 diesel I prefer the drive of the MK2 but if the MK1 is the 110bhp I would go for that

If you like your car interiors to look like the inside of an eastern european night club.......then MK1's are great ;) (I'm comparing MK1&2 VRS)

Hi

I have just bought a 2005 Octavia 2 1.9 TDi Elegance - picked it up last week.

I spent ages looking for one at least a month. Its a minefield out there and I was getting buyer fatigue. The prices you quote are odd, 1400 difference for 1 year difference. I was looking for an 05, 55 or 06 model and the prices varied enormously 3500 to 6000. The £6000 one was an 06 with only 25,000 miles and like a new car.

I used the Whatcar free valuation service. You type in the registration and mileage and it comes back with dealer, private, trade, and trade in prices.

I found that the dealers consistently tried to get £500 more than the dealer price. The private prices were more consistent.

I found all sorts of tricks, some had fiddly ,milages. Some Ambiente had the wheels replaced with steel ones.

In the end I found a genuine 2005 Elegance with 76k miles and negotiated a price of £3450. If I was you I would hold out for an Elegance, but you should be able to get a good one for £4k - which incidentally was my budget too. However its difficult to find a good one from a private seller.

Good luck

Thanks for all your responses. I think I might hold out for an Elegance Mk2 as I have had a look at a Mk2 and it does feel like its a very solid car. Interesting note on the variances in price, will check out any potential purchase against a site such as What Car.

Thanks,

Mk 2 has much more room in the rear seats which was one of the main reasons we like the Mk 2.

1.9D is excellent in the 105 and even better in the 130 hp form.

I am not a fan of the 2 litre diesel compared to the 1.9D and that is when we switched to petrols as they have just got better and better and closed the gap quite a bit to the diesels in fuel consumption.

Always worried about something big going wrong on out of warranty cars so would probably buy a non-turbo Mondeo in this age range and have less worry about expensive bit going pop.

From what I gather the MKI has proven to be more reliable than the MKII. There was a guy on here that ran a taxi firm and he insisted that was the case having had fleets of both.

My wife's Fabia VRS MKI has been bomb proof whereas my MKII Octy VRS has been nothing but trouble. If the MKI Octy is of the same ilk as the MKI Fabia (should be) then that would make sense as to why people find them more reliable.

Main thing on the 1.8T 20v MKI though is the coil pack issues, oil pump failure, snapped timing belt etc - same as the Leon Cupra and the TT. Also it's a 5 speed box - MKII is a 6 speed and that is a big one for me.

Yup, just realised we're not talking VRS here. Ooops. :) Ignore the last part of my post. Rest still applies.

Also all the problems you've stated arn't right lol. Coil packs have a recall out which included my 130k non full service history one, so 4 brand new revised packs. The oil pumps arn't the problem its the pick up pipe getting blocked due to dodgy servicing or if the sump had been replaced and too much sealent used. There hasn't been a post on the octy one forum that I've seen about a cam belt snapping prematurely so can't comment on that. A 6 speed gearbox would be good if the 6th was a proper cruising gear, unlike the cupras lol

Just going by experience I've had of the 1.8T. If they did a recall on the coil packs, great - but I've known several people in recent months who are still having problems. One has a TT whos cam belt snapped - Audi specialist he took it to says he sees loads with snapped timing belts and there's now a roaring trade in reconditioned heads with new valves etc. Oil pump wise, you're right there - it's a blockage but doesn't that result in the pump having to be changed? 5 speed wise, that's more personal preference. 5 speeds will equal a greater jump in gearing per shift, and also it's now force of habit to reach for 6th even when it's not there. :)

Elegance Mk2 here. I've had 3 Mk2's (2 x 06 Elegance PD140 DSG's and a vRS) and I've had a Mk1

Mk2 is miles better.

Bought mine from a dealer last year for £7K with 37K on the clock...
