How many miles from a full tank and which model ?

Featured Replies

2.0 TDI 140 CR 6 manual, brand new car only close to 2,900miles now.

Brim to Brim: 34.6mpg pure in-town 20-30mph zone drive. 51 to 54mpg 50-80mph motorway/A-road drive.

Max 56.1mpg recorded from a drive partly in torrential rain between Hull and London and Canterbury and back to London 7th to 10th July...

Normally refuel after 450 to 500 miles on a long run, each time 30 to 35 litres. Costing around 45 to 50 GBP... That's 1 pound per 10miles roughly, not bad for a new car.

About the same for me redbuta

I've seen absolutely amazing (70+ mpg) figures on journeys that are downhill for the first few miles so the engine can get to temperature without having to do very much work. I find if I avoid pushing

  • I get around 40 MPG average (see my signature and spritmonitor account, I'm the number 1 in fuel consumption for the 1.8 TSI DSG!), but to reach this value as average you have to make some sacrifices:

Posted Images

1.4 Tsi 631.1 miles travelled / 95 remaining, and took 47 litres (exactly) to the '3rd click-off'. 58.8 mpg indicated / 61.03 calculated. Did an 850 mile round-trip between Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Mainly motorways / dual carriageways. Average speed on the trip computer (us poor folks don't have maxidot on our pre-facelft 's' spec. Superbs) was 51 mph. If I'm not in a hurry, I tend to just sit in line with the hgvs on the inside lane - so means usually running between 55 - 60. Also included at least 30 minutes crawling on outskirts of Manchester (diverted off M6 north-bound south of J27 / J28 due to serious accident, but traffic on M61 / M60 starting to get congested too -was after 4pm.

Cut to the figures? 58.8mpg indicated, 61.03 calculated. I find this amazing for a petrol-engined car the size of a Superb II. My main concern when returning to petrol after 20 years of driving diesels would be the impact on my fuel bills - well the difference is negligible for my typical usage. Still very happy with my Superb!

NB my displayed versus calculated figures are almost always within 3 or 4 tenths of one another (with the calculated always the higher of the two). In this instance, on the initial fill-up the tank had been filled a wee bit beyond the usual '3 click-offs' in order to get maximum value from an '8p off each litre voucher'- I reckon the difference is around 0.5 litres. (adjusted for this would make actual consumption 60.45 mpg)

1.8TSI manual hatchback - 27.9 mpg calculated over the 72,000 miles I've driven it. Usually get between 330-350 miles per tank (54-55 litres).

I've got a MY2012 Greenline as a company car.

In no way do I try to get great mpg as I don't pay the fuel bill! I don't change gear when it tells me, I don't look ahead and relax on the pedals.

The car has done just over 8,000 miles and I've got 57.4mpg since new. God knows what I'd get if I drove economically!

The gear change indicator is just a joke. If you obeyed that strictly then the world would be full of diesel engines which would be all sooted up. Not to mention a stack of failed DPF's!!!

Attached is my record. In miles this is 1000/1.606 = 622. And yes, that is not with a diesel, but with the 1.8 TSI. Normally I can do about 800 km on one tank, which is about 500 miles.

Done about 2000 miles (cars done 7500 total). 34mpg around town, never bettered 45mpg so far. Same as previous auto diesels I've owned. Hope it'll get better when it loosens up - if not reckon it's not bad for a big AWD estate.

It's a 140 DSG L&K

Continue to be amazed at how economical my 1.4 TSi is - equally impressive figures for the 1.8!

  • 2 weeks later...

I finally got around to doing a brim to brim test on my Greenline twin door and at 11,000 miles its is just starting to loosen up. Anyway, I chicken'd out at 802 miles as there was nothing showing on the fuel gauge. At the point the tank overflowed I had put in 54.9 litres which equates to overall 66.4 mpg. The computer is showing an average of 66.8 so its surprisingly accurate.

I still find it incredible that such a big refined car can do such great economy.

  • 1 year later...

At the moment my wife drives 'Habu' (2010 Elegance 170 combi, 70,000miles) around town all day. She gets just over 400 miles on a tank. Our town is full of hills and traffic is pretty bad. On a long trip with motorways and B roads we get 600-650 miles between fills. AC is always on and car typically has 3-4 people in it.

Only about 5 fills so far. Usually about 950 Kms (Just under 600 miles). I don't let it get much below quarter tank.

Range shows at about 300kms remaining. Average MPG to date fill to fill 57MPG. Computer about 10% optimistic.

1.6 Diesel Elegance non Greenline.

3.6 V6 - posted elsewhere on here but around 30mpg on brim to fumes 60 liter tank with varied (A road/Motorway) 30 mile out/return daily route. If I hoon in sport mode with paddles then it drops to 23mpg. On a long motorway run I have had 33mpg. Pleased with that.

typically 650 miles on £60

1.6 td estate 2015 superb

59mpg but expecting 65mpg on a good run

at FULL the "range" says 770 ish miles

I did 600 miles yesterday in my 2015 superb 170 Dsg estate. A mix of motorway country and built up area and according to the car computer I got 51.7 mpg and didn't need a fill up. The car isn't run in yet so the mpg will probably improve a little.

I have a CR140 DSG and the most I've had from mine was 570 miles which was an mpg of 47.0 (I use spritmonitor.de so that was an actual mpg not what the car said)..... On average I usually get around 500 miles to a tank with around 50 miles range left showing on the maxidot.

The concensus seems to be that the car over reads the mpg by approx 10% so your real life figure was probably closer to 46-47 mpg. As I mention above I use the spritmonitor.de each time I fill up the car and that gives you an actual average mpg for each tank full.... Other sites are also available that do the same.

The average mpg for my car since I bought last June is shown in my sig below.

almost 6000 miles, true average 54mpg, last fill 59mpg (mainly motorways plus 1 day town taxi work)

about £30/week less than last car in fuel

There are some cracking figures for diesel cars on this thread - considering size and weight of the Superb anything around 50mpg+ has got to be good news for those that need economy in their daily drives.

the day I stop taxi driving im buying something with a honking great V8 auto and rwd

I've been working over in Kent this week and met this guy on Thursday in Faversham. I don't know him but I heard his car so went outside to investigate and we got chatting, it was a 1985 Sierra Cosworth but had a Viper V10 under the bonnet. So, when you've finished taxi driving how about taking the 1.6TDI out and replacing it with something interesting, or alternatively just buy a Superb 3.6 V6.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgajlVQDo4o Strangely he didn't mention fuel economy!!!

If only Skoda did a hemi Superb driving the right wheels....

170 2011 elegance superb estate, generally get 500 ish to a tank but double push it to 600 mostly sitting at 70ish on carriageway and motorways and not getting a hard time accelerating to it

Total Litres used to date 3748.25

Total Gallons to date 825.61

Total Miles 27,105

Average Miles to tank 301.17

Average Cost of Fuel in £ £51.97

Cost Per Mile in p 17.26

Max £ per litre £1.41

Average £/L 1.327

Worst MPG 29.25

Best MPG 38.67

Average MPG to date 32.83

Mainly ~400miles to a tank

This is my daily driver and I have between 18 and 21 roundabouts on my way to work.I am pleased with this as my old Octavia 2.0PD 140 would do only 43MPG average. Its much nicer to drive and the engine much more flexible.

It does vary some what but very happy considering the size and weight of the car.

That's pretty much my experience too.  It's only since I changed jobs to be nearer home that it's gone down to 32; used to be around 36mpg average.

If you drive it like you stole it (actually I DID steal it so this is no theoretical exercise) then you can get FAR, FAR less than 29mpg!

Very sensitive to engine temperature: cold starts are brutal; same journey with a warm engine gives entirely different readings.

I've seen absolutely amazing (70+ mpg) figures on journeys that are downhill for the first few miles so the engine can get to temperature without having to do very much work. I find if I avoid pushing the engine hard until at least the temperature gauge says it's at temperature, the trip consumption is noticeably lower. This can be hard if you've got a few busy junctions to accelerate through near the start of a journey or a steep hill or two, which is where I particularly notice the consumption rising. If you have a few places to call to, do the longest journey first so the car can spend most of its time at temperature. I can get 800+ km (500+ miles) out of a tank of fuel if I drive gently and have seen a predicted range of 1250 km on refuelling while driving very economically (I was nearly out of fuel :P ). One or two hard overtakes on a 100 km trip make no difference I've noticed to the overall fuel consumption once the car is already warm too.
