Reverse lights not working

Featured Replies

I've noticed over the past few days that my reverse lights have stopped working. I have checked the bulbs and the fuse which all seem fine.

I have parking sensors on the car which have also failed but I imagine that all these are connected on the same circuit.

I've done a quick search and have seen a few threads about the reverse switch near the gear box.

Does anyone have any information regarding this? I have tried searching for a guide but couldn't find anything.

Thanks

David

Probably an earth connection has come adrift, check at the LH back corner within the boot area behind the lining.

i would check the reverse light switch first i havent got any pictures of one but if you take the undertray off your car and look at the front of the car on the gearbox there should be a sensor with a little plug if you unplug it and join the two wires in some way and turn the ignition on the reverse lights should come on if they do then you need to replace that switch if they dont then you need to look further into wiring

Does your rear wiper come on if the front wipers are on and you put the car into reverse?

When mine packed up the wire leading from the reversing light switch at the gearbox had broken. Aparently the connector for the brake pad wear sensor is the same fitting as that on the reversing light switch so if you have an old pad about, cut the wire off and graft it into your loom if this is your problem. I didn't have a pad so I bought this from the bay of E as there are no scrappers near to me either.

No problems for the last 2 years.

Sorry to bring up an old post, I’ve got this problem on my MK1 fabia VRS and can’t figure it out! Thought it would make sense to use this thread as apposed to starting a new one! Anyway... Fuse is fine, reverse light switch is working when I take it out and press the button down. I’ve noticed that the rear wiper does not come on when the car is put into reverse when the front wipers are one. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks all!

As in one of the previous posts above, have you checked that the earthing wire is connected.

Thanks I have not, where would I locate it?

The rear wiper motor and the reversing lights use the same earth point (E5) which is located somewhere behind the boot side carpet trims. Possibly near one of the light clusters. What I would do is bridge the two wires of the reversing light switch with a piece of wire to rule it out and then have the ignition on and you can play with the earth and the reversing lights will come on when you find the fault.

Thank you, I found the earth and it is fine. What’s confusing me is that the lights come on when I press the sensor in, so it must be whatever is meant to press the button down that is faulty?

Or the contacts within the switch are getting old/worn/dirty, so needing more pressure to make good enough contact?  A replacement switch might make all the difference?  Not expensive, as far as I remember.

Had this problem on the wife's car. Fitted new switch but problem persisted. It was the wire at the bottom of the loom where it comes out of the plastic shroud. The insulation had become brittle and let moisture in corroding the wires. Had to chop out 10cm and solder new connector in place. It was this one:

Just follow wires from reverse light switch on front side of gearbox underneath car. Hard to miss it really.
