law on additional lights

Featured Replies

so there is no limit on the position, size or intensity of additional front position lights. They are not even required to be E marked or in pairs.

So who's going to give it a try first?

If you want the lights, get them. I personally think they look good if done right, other people think they look gash.

I think it's wrong for people to tell you what to do.

I seem to remember a Rowan Atkinson sketch years ago...

He had a Carpy old banger and was trying to make it look cool.

He fitted so many extra lights on the front that the back wheels were off the ground?

So I guess that would be 2 lights too many? :)

DRL's are from what I understand are supposed to come on at ignition position 2, they are wired on their own circuit(however certain cars Audi{with xenon} for example will dim the LED's to define indicator of side/marker lights of dipped beam), basic systems shut down on use of sidelights or dipped beam. Most cars do have an in-built DRL system but is sold with the system wired-up/engaged depending on where in the world it is being shipped to.

The following is from a Ring instruction manual for a set of their lamps:

When a pair of Daylight Running Lamps (DRL)

you should obey the following legal requirements:

The lamps should be positioned symmetrically and in pairs:

the same height from the road and the same distance from

the sides of the vehicle.

The lamps should be so that the outer edges are no more

than 400mm from the outer edge of the vehicle. Height above the

ground must be a minimum of 250mm and a maximum of 1500mm.

WARNING: The lamps must be positioned to ensure the light emitted does not dazzle other road users.

all fitted - took a couple of hours - mostly routing cables securely!

After removing the drivers side headlight unit I scraped back the insulation on the sidelight lead and soldered another similar wire to it, then wrapped in insulation and covered with cable wrap.. The return feed was made by fitting a wire with a spade terminal underneath one of the diesel filter mounting bracket bolts. Dont tell me its a fire hazard, it isnt. Both wires were terminated with crimp on lucar faston connectors. The lights included a simple harness that fitted to the fastons.

The wires were routed along the metal bars behind the bumper and fed through to the LEDs.

I got these lights

In daylight

and at night

They do the job but could be a lot brighter.

Nice work John, very neat.

How come they are on with sidelights or are they dimmed? I thought they had to turn off (or dim) when either side lights or dipped headlights are on?

The last picture really illustrates why I'm not a huge fan of aftermarket DRL's, despite being stood infront of the car the nearside DRL isn't as bright as the offside due to the angle they are being viewed from. Out on the road this makes them obviously non-genuine which I'm not keen on.

In contrast the LED DRL's on the vRS Octavia (and other manufacturers) don't suffer from this issue.

I think I would have bought the genuine fog light / DRL clusters from Skoda and fitted them in place of the black plastic blanks on your car. If I was keen on LED's then this would also have allowed you to replace the filament bulbs with LED versions.

As long as you are pleased with the results though, that's the main thing, thanks for sharing the final result!

I've never thought of headlights on as aggressive, fog lamps in bright daylight maybe, otherwise Volvo drivers would be terrorising the roads.

Each very much to their own. They unfortunately just scream "I'm aftermarket" and viewed the same as the 10yr old cars being driven around with them integrated into front splitters etc.

No; DRL's do; front position lights dont - and there is NO specification limiting their brightness!

No, I'm not. They definitely arent bright enough, it was a bit of a trial run. Do you know the price of the skoda units?

Also wiring fog lights would be an issue - whereas the sidelight cable is easily accessed by removing the drivers side headlamp unit.
