Tesco UL 99 Ron?

Featured Replies

I might be a bit behind the times here, but I noticed that my local Tesco's now do a Super Unleaded that claims it is 99 RON :)

Anyone tried it? I usually use Esso 97 myself as it is generally cheaper than Ultimate or Optimax, but the Tesco stuff is about 4p a litre cheaper than that, 9p If I use my money off coupon that comes with the shopping. So any thoughts, good or bad, especially as it seems to be a higher octane than everything else out there.....

Sounds good! I wish my local Tesco did super unleaded - but they don't :(

My view is that all you need to look for is BS EN 228 (95 octane unleaded) or BS 7800 (97 octane super unleaded). Everything else is just marketing hype. OK, some proprietary brands may have extra detergents, but how much detergent do you actually need - unless you've filled up on a couple of batches of especially dirty fuel?

Before having the car remapped, I was happy to fill up with supermarket 95 octane. Now, I prefer 97 octane super unleaded; fortunately my local branch of Morrisons sells a generic one, at a few pennies less than a BP or Shell garage would sell Ultimate or Optimax respectively.

Incidentally, why is Optimax specified against BS EN 228 (95 octane) instead of BS 7800? My guess is that it's bog-standard 95 octane, with a cocktail of detergents and octane boosters added. All well and good if it's fresh, but beware of Shell garages out in the sticks, where the Optimax is sitting around in the storage tanks too long...

I've tried it and notice no difference over my usual BP Ultimate.

Correct..

Thats why some of the seasoned members here prefer Ultimate as "its more consistant"

I was gobspacked when visiting my local one and seeing it, just wish they did it when i could still use it! Though i have noticed they are calling it 99 octane and not 99 RON. Is there a difference between the two standards? Is 95 RON the same as 95 octane?

At the local tesco in Stratford upon avon they do a 97 ron unleaded but not the 99ron. Hmmm a bit of a marketing ploy I think unless they really do 3 types of unleaded????

i visited a local esso todad found 97 RON super for 88.5p cheaper than ultimate or optimax round here

Filled up with the "NEW" ??? 99Ron at Brookfield in Cheshunt on Friday, used the tank full since then and in my humble opinion, yes there is a noticable difference. A lot smoother pick up and deffo more top end.

I filled mine up as well, couldn't turn down the extra 5p per litre off!! It does seem slightly perkier though, so I will give it a few tankfuls to properly check :D

The base fuel stocks used by fuel companys are similar however the special blends used by top brands are very different.

The fuel technology advancement (incl lowered sulphor levels) is one of the prime reasons we now enjoy extended service intervals and huge extra mechanical longevity.

The other reason is oil, mobil one (for example) is not just comma 20/50 with "a few additives" added. Most of us would care about what we use as a lube, we ought to care about fuel too.

It is a shame to spend money on a nice car and feed it mediocre fuel, just like cheap oil and tyres it is a false economy. The supermarkets started to add additives a few years ago after it was found that engines were being damaged by their products. The balance of achieving an effective detergent that also avoids causing damage by its own action is a very fine and technical one. Hope the renown chemists at Tescos (and the rest) are up to the task.

not trying to shatter your fragile image of the world but they don't make the fuel in the back alongside the doughnuts mate. they buy the fuel from the likes of ESSO, BP, SHELL etc

Sell the 4x4 tank, buy a lovely fabia vrs and all your "issues* will evaporate

by evaporate do mean lost in the smog??

i'm happy with my tank thank you very much, its a proper engine not a tractor engine and i have bootspace even with my twin subs in the boot

so what would i gain from a fabia vRS then? lower performance, lower spec, worse handeling, less room but 40mpg

yay!!! i really need to lower my fuel consumption..............not

Now I know I'm getting on a bit, but I've never seen a tesco's on the motorway...:(

Another tank of optfulx.
