Over the moon with the 1.8 TSI

Featured Replies

That's it decided then - 1.8TSI will be the next vehicle. I toyed with lots of other ideas, but this one makes most sense. Plenty of usable power, respectable MPG figures, and I love the Octavia. Win all round.

Just need to save up some cash to buy one - will probably wait for the Mk3 now :)

Unfortunately along with a few other engines, the 1.8TSi has been dropped from the current Octavia line-up - no more to be made so stock vehicles only. I just hope it is back in the MkIII by change time next October

Yes - it has been dropped from current cars because of the Mk3.

However, if I had about 3-4K I'd be damn tempted to go and get a newer Mk2. Just spotted one on the Skoda Used Site for £6990! 1.8TSI Ambiente, 2008, 28K on the clock....... Probably get 5000-5500 for mine trade if I were lucky....

Hmm not bad. More miles than mine - but 2 years newer. 49K on mine.

That was exceptional! Enforced gentle driving over a very flat route.

2 yrs, 21,000mile lifetime average MPG (from fill data) is just under 37 mpg.

Drove down the A1/A57 to Lincoln at the weekend - 90 miles each way at a fairly steady 60-75mph - maxidot said 42mpg

When I have some B road fun in S mode or tiptronic mode the maxidot goes as low as 18-19mpg - but it's worth it..

NB the DSG 1.8 is the only model in the range where the standard consumption figures show an improvement in mpg over the manual version. At 70 mph in 7th gear the engine is turning at 2,300 rpm - around the same as my old 1.9TDi in 5th.

Ah, with this and adnmra's confessions, that makes me feel much better! :) Yeah, my average over it's life is mid thirties, so that sounds about right.

Just asking because I really don't know.

+ From a performance / economy ballance this is an attractive engine option.

+ For my taste, although subtle compared to some, the VRS aesthetics are a bit 'shouty' / 'in yer face' (appologies VRS drivers)

Is there any consensus regarding whether VAG sorted out the carbon build up problem by the time the 1.8 TSI engine came out?

Thanks

31 mpg average over just under 10K miles in my old FL 1.8 TSi. This was a 4x4 though and that seems to result in around a 10% deficit in MPG over a 2WD. The best I ever managed was 37 mpg and the worst mid 20's. Fuelly link here: http://www.fuelly.com/driver/pinkpanther/octavia

I have to agree with all the earlier comments - it is a good engine and gives the Octavia a decent turn of speed.

I've actually owned 2 cars with this engine and bought my first one in preference to a 2.0 TFSi vRS! I had turned up at the garage with the intention of buying a 2.0TFSi vRS, but after driving a 1.8 TSi, decided I could live without the spoilers and big wheels. It genuinely does have 8/10's of the performance.

Well back home in a sweltering East Lancashire...

the 325 mile round trip on the very congested in places M5 gave a 45 mpg, despite a few times grinding to halt and the usual service stop.

Had a few laughs with a 320d out of the services who tried it on, but was surprised when I blasted past him, he caught up eventually after nearly choking all the M5 just after Michael Wood services in the process!
